How many loads of washing do you do a week

Boring I know but I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing an excessive amount and how to cut down.

One adult, two teenagers and a one-year-old. I would say I do around 14-18 washes a week. Normal?

Yes we also have to do the youngest 2s coats often. Mud kitchen in reception and at pre school. Water play. Yes even in this weather. Ds coat was washed 3 times last week as was sopping wet and muddy. Also often his trainers maybe once a week as again they're beyond a sponge over.

Our coats i freshen every so often otherwise they smell funny getting wet, dry wet dry.

And those who say about jeans. Mine and dh dont last long before inevitably one of the Dc get paint, food, snot or other kid like crap over them. Im sure when they older it will be different. But i sure as shit am not walking around with a snail trail of snot on me!

IWishIWasABaller · 07/11/2022 13:25

I do two a day unless it's very dry & windy out this time of year I might do another depending on how full the baskets are!

Chomolungma · 07/11/2022 13:26

7 here for 2 adults and 3 teens. I'd definitely try and cut yours down OP, to save time as well as money.

One every day for clothes. Set on a timer for first thing in morning while our electricity is still on the cheap night rate. Extra for towels and bedding as needed. I prefer to do one every day rather than save it up as we dry indoors without a tumble dryer.

Topgub · 07/11/2022 13:27

Do people not have puddle suits and wellies anymore?

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 07/11/2022 13:28

Re red uniform. A pair of white pants got caught in the red load after many washes and compared to the other pants they were visibly off white. So i wouldn't put them im with other stuff

I get im fussy, once a polo is stained it goes to the rag bag for dh work ( saves him buying tubs of rags that are essentially torn up old material)

IWishIWasABaller · 07/11/2022 13:29

Should add that we are 3 adults 2 teens one child household, 9kg washing machine and I am militant about separating into darks/whites/colours

newrubylane · 07/11/2022 13:31

About 10, I reckon. But I do have two 3 year olds who tend to have the occasional toilet accident, which probably accounts for at least one load.

AlwaysLatte · 07/11/2022 13:31

Bedding a thick super king set may not necessarily get the sheet in the machine too with it meaning more than 1 load . But a standard double would fit a sheet in too
It's annoying, two kings and two double duvet covers plus the sheets etc take up a few washes even though they're only cotton.

Oblomov22 · 07/11/2022 13:40

What? I do 4 or 5, including bedding. And that's with 2 x sporty teens.

kegofcoffee · 07/11/2022 13:46

2 adults, a baby and a toddler. We do around 6 washes:

  • 2 loads of whites
  • 2 loads of colours
  • 2 additional loads: towels, bedding, woollens.

Feels like all I do is washing, with sorting, washing, drying, folding, putting away. A d it's loads less than yours.

nannybeach · 07/11/2022 13:49

Obviously no-one is worried about the price of electricity on this thread. I had 4 DKs,used washable nappies, never had anything like these washloads. Now,2 people,2 washes,a week. Light and dark, never mixed. If I haven't got enough for a full load of one,it waits till the following week. It is weather dependent,as well.

Favouritefruits · 07/11/2022 13:51

14 but I do 5 on a Monday as that’s the day I change the bedding and towels.

PeloFondo · 07/11/2022 13:52

Just me and I do 2-3 a week depending if there's bedding or not (super king size so that's a load on it's own!)
Wear clothes more than once, use a towel for about a week, but I exercise a lot and my gym clothes need washing every time

escapingthecity · 07/11/2022 13:52

I think I wash towels about once a fortnight 😂

Rachell1 · 07/11/2022 13:53

Family of four, we do an average of 5 loads per week and I typically let it build up and do it all in one day. Although having a dryer does make that easier.

Load 1 - sheets and bedding (co sleep with kids so keeps that down!)
Load 2 - dh’s work clothes
Load 3 & 4 - mine and kids clothes
Load 5 - towels

There is the occasional extra load (trainers, duvet, pillows etc) but I don’t wash them on the regular.

I have to admit, I don’t tend to separate colours and whites much to some peoples disgust! However never had any problems and if it’s a new item that is brightly coloured then I may wash separately just in case.

@user1469095927

Sponge clean spills?

Stop washing bedding weekly

Thanks @Topgub - i do bedding every two weeks! I think the problem lies with older two who shove stuff in the washing basket without checking and then it gets mixed with dirty washing.

Plantmoretrees86 · 07/11/2022 13:56

Probably about 10. One load a day of baby stuff as she's very reflux-y, then a couple of loads of mine and DP's each week and a bedding/towel wash weekly. Pre baby we only ran the machine at weekends so currently feels like laundry is never ending! Couldn't cope with drying any more than that as we're in a flat with no outside space. So 14-18 seems quite a lot to me...

PrincessofWellies · 07/11/2022 13:57

My god, I do 2 washes a week. There is no hope for the planet with the amount of washing some of you are doing. 😱

Lou22000 · 07/11/2022 13:58

I don't think that's bad attall, we are a family of 5 and I'd say this is around the same as us. I try wash daily to and my 2x dogs have bedding so I like to wash that once a week. My daughter likes to wear things once then thinks there dirty this is so annoying :/

You know I assumed this would change now people are paying so much for it but .. no!

The mystery of the £300+ monthly bills for some people is definitely not a mystery anymore.

I guess if people are very fussy and really want to wash everything after one wear and wash towels separately at 90oC (😱) fair enough if they are so rich it doesn’t matter .. except that we all share the one planet .. but I don’t quite understand the posts saying they are trying to wash less. It’s not surely that hard just to wash half as much if that’s what you want to do?

TeenTraumaTrials · 07/11/2022 14:10

We do 5 washes a week as general rule - 2 adults and 2 teenagers

1 x whites/lights - so includes eg light pink undies and pale t-shirts
2 x darks/coloureds - so all black school uniform, dark or very bright coloured t-shirts, jeans etc - this includes gym and sports kit
1 x bedding - one week it's ours and the other week the two DCs
1 x towels - I also throw dog blankets into this one occasionally or if not one of the dark ones

I honestly don't know how folks manage to dry any more than that unless they're tumble-drying loads. I have two clothes airers that are constantly full.

chickensandbees · 07/11/2022 14:16

2 adults 2 teenagers, 2-3 washes a week.

I'm amazed how much people wash, how to you have the time and money and how do you get it dry.

Usually 1 dark wash, 1 white wash and alternate towels/bedding every other week.

Occasionally an extra wash if the weather is good and I'm feeling extravagant!

upinaballoon · 07/11/2022 14:29

0.06 The muck rolls off when it gets dry enough.

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 14:54

Thanks everyone. Some Interesting posts here. I’m going to see if I can cut down on some things although I’m never going to be the kind person who is able to wear their jeans 6 times without washing them !
