It has been reported that May 8th will be a bank holiday now. It's my birthday so I am quite pleased about it.

Feel for those it will adversely affect though.

UK has a low number of public holidays by international standards.

So perhaps instead of deploring an additional one, we should be looking at why and how economies with more remain successful and what their work/life balance is like.

There's six months to sort out exam timetables, and although an extra chore, I can't believe its insurmountable on this much notice

I wonder what they'll do - move them all along a day?

I'm a teacher of Y6 and I have a child in Y6.
It's so hard to prepare children for tests when their routine is thrown.
A Bank Holiday on Monday 1st...
Some schools will have to close on Thursday 4th because they're used as Polling Stations...
Now a Bank Holiday on Monday 8th...
How are they supposed to do their best?!
We keep telling families how important good attendance is, and then random days off are thrown into the mix!! 😂

Yes the horrors of children having another day’s holiday.

Im sure they’ll be fine

The exams issue is concerning really isn't it especially for the older kids.

No

antelopevalley · 06/11/2022 12:03

I am glad for an extra day's holiday.

In most of these countries, set holiday dates are not given in lieu if they fall on a weekend, so the comparison isn’t totally accurate. I’ve lived in Italy and experienced this.

Scotland has more bank holidays than England.

It just shows that our government doesn't even think about education.
I must admit, having the coronation in a Saturday seemed sensible because it would minimise disruption but not now they've still given an extra bank holiday. Completely unnecessary imo.

🙄

🙄

The Coronation is on a Saturday.
The Government want people to be able to celebrate the Coronation with street parties etc.
Why do we need to do it on Monday?

So

May 1st
May 8th
May 29th

May's not a very productive month, is it?

Particularly annoying as I'm self employed with regular scheduled appointments on Mondays.

UpsilonPi · 06/11/2022 12:23

I'd normally be happy enough, despite being self employed, but it's GCSE year in my house, and I would rather DC was in school.

reigatecastle · 06/11/2022 12:28

I assume some people already have NHS appointments booked too so another day of cancelled and postponed appointments. The government is so bloody stupid. The coronation is on a Saturday and there is no need for yet another bank holiday.

reigatecastle · 06/11/2022 12:29

And why do we need effing street parties? AAAAGGGGHHHHHH! It is not the 1950s.

AdaColeman · 06/11/2022 13:01

I feel that it's a decision made in order to benefit the tourist trade in London.
With the coronation (sensibly) on a Saturday, all the tourists would have gone home and back to work by the Monday. But, make Monday 8th a bank holiday, and many thousands will stay to spend their money in the capital on the Sunday and Monday.

I am wondering what will happen with the exams in Scotland

There is a contingency day 1st June, they will probably move them to then, which will give the kids more time to study!
