It has been reported that May 8th will be a bank holiday now. It's my birthday so I am quite pleased about it.

Feel for those it will adversely affect though.

I don't work on Mondays so won't get the benefit! Annoying.

PeeJayDay · 06/11/2022 09:03

I'll be cancelling swimming lessons on a Monday in plenty of time. Been meaning to anyway, our council takes the piss 😖

I wanted the Friday since the kids are off school on the Thursday too

PeeJayDay · 06/11/2022 09:04

"I don't work on Mondays so won't get the benefit"

I don't work Mondays but will be credited with the annual leave to take when I like. Win win

MrsDorrington · 06/11/2022 09:04

I’m self employed so please enlighten me.
Does this mean employers have to fund a day’s holiday for staff, or does it mean staff have to use their existing holiday entitlement to cover that day?

RewildingAmbridge · 06/11/2022 09:04

Three bank holidays and the two weeks without we're on holiday! Sounds like a great month.

extrapineappleonmypizza · 06/11/2022 09:05

Monday 8th May is supposed to be the first day of KS2 SATs 🤦‍♀️

Good question.

I can imagine there would be upset if people were told to use their annual leave to have a day off to "celebrate" the Coronation.

Still, as a Republican, anything that causes people to question the fawning with the Monarchy works for me.

cakeorwine · 06/11/2022 09:12

Our contracts gives us 26 days plus all UK bank holidays. It doesn't say how many bank holidays so I guess we get it off and it's paid.

Would be a nice time to use just a few days annual leave to get a decent holiday but DS has revision at that time.

All the extra BH moaners, feel free to go into work anyway.

I have to go into work anyway and it's an utter PITA childcare wise but yeah you enjoy yourself.

RedRiverShore2 · 06/11/2022 09:16

I guess it's a bit late to move the May 1st one as people have stuff booked and it would be a bit unfair at this late stage

Depends on the contract.

XX days plus BHs = extra time off

YY days inclusive of BHs = take it from your entitlement

Violashift · 06/11/2022 09:17

Hope they haven't printed SATS papers with the dates.

GCSE MFL speaking could be happening but the school can change this.

HR person here - if your contract days you are entitled to 'x days leave plus bank holidays' then your employer has to give you the additional bank hol.

If your contract says you are entitled to 'x days holiday plus the 8 bank holidays' then your employer does not have to give you the additional bank holiday - as it's in excess of the 8 you are contractually entitled to. However some of these employers (including mine) do choose to give the extra bank hols which is nice of them!

I wonder what they'll do - move them all along a day?

I'm a teacher of Y6 and I have a child in Y6.
It's so hard to prepare children for tests when their routine is thrown.
A Bank Holiday on Monday 1st...
Some schools will have to close on Thursday 4th because they're used as Polling Stations...
Now a Bank Holiday on Monday 8th...
How are they supposed to do their best?!
We keep telling families how important good attendance is, and then random days off are thrown into the mix!! 😂

cakeorwine · 06/11/2022 09:28

It's now time for the Express to write an article telling you how you can take off May and just use 1 day holiday*

  • I might be exaggerating on that
Dogsgottabone · 06/11/2022 09:34

Total nightmare.

I'm an exams officer. We would have been running orals that day and running around getting everything ready for the following Monday exam starts.

I really could do without it.

AdaColeman · 06/11/2022 09:34

I feel sorry for all the small business owners who will have to cover their extra costs.
I think it shows a lack of foresight by the government. If they wanted a celebratory bank holiday, why not have the coronation on Saturday 29th April, to tie in with the existing May 1st bank holiday?

IwishIwasSupermum · 06/11/2022 09:37

I was looking at booking Centreparcs last night when news of this extra BH came in so booked that weekend as cheaper than other BH weekends, now friend wants to book and CP website is stating no availability for any lodge at any U.K. park. Will they be closed or are they adjusting the prices up to be in line with other BH weekend rates?

Just checked again, there’s availability now at increased rates, glad I got in quick!

RandomMess · 06/11/2022 09:42

Where I work just deducts a closure day from Christmas or Easter rather than us get an extra day off.

Hmm I work somewhere where bank holidays are included in my annual leave (as opposed to in addition to) so looks like I’m going to be forced to have a day then. Great.Hmm

Annie232 · 06/11/2022 09:55

jeez all those moaning about an extra days holiday 🙄

ikeawardrobe · 06/11/2022 09:59

I suspect we will be working. My work are miserable. They only closed last minute, because everyone else did for the queens funeral and that was only because it would look back if we didn’t close. We didn’t get the long weekend in June.

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2022 10:01

well, my point is I’m thinking my workplace might say it’s NOT an extra day but just an additional day I have to take out of my statutory holiday allowance?

What does your contract say about BHs?
