It has been reported that May 8th will be a bank holiday now. It's my birthday so I am quite pleased about it.

Feel for those it will adversely affect though.

jeez all those moaning about an extra days holiday 🙄

Im as happy as larry with an extra bank holiday

but loads of people will have to work it anyway (possibly including myself) so if they want to ‘moan’ they should feel free

there are others who will be adversely affected by it as well…

All the extra BH moaners, feel free to go into work anyway.

I'd love to but y'know work's going to be shut so no choice but to have the day off and lose a day's A/L for it.

HR person here - if your contract days you are entitled to 'x days leave plus bank holidays' then your employer has to give you the additional bank hol.

If your contract says you are entitled to 'x days holiday plus the 8 bank holidays' then your employer does not have to give you the additional bank holiday - as it's in excess of the 8 you are contractually entitled to. However some of these employers (including mine) do choose to give the extra bank hols which is nice of them!

Mine say x days including Bh's (no specified number) so the extra one will be coming out of my A/L which is a bit shit really.

WimbyAce · 06/11/2022 10:19

Bit annoying for me as pt and work a Monday so will have to take 3 days holiday off my allowance in May!

ManefesationofConciousness · 06/11/2022 10:34

Another unpaid day for the 6 million self employed

jeez all those moaning about an extra days holiday 🙄

For millions it isnt an extra day holiday
It is a day when they cant work and dont get paid

Check your privilege!

WetandWindier · 06/11/2022 10:39

Quite like the idea of an extra Bank Holiday, just don't want to waste a moment of it on the royal family. Looking for a nice campsite with no telly.

Trianglesquarerectangle · 06/11/2022 10:41

@Mrstumbletap Why do we have to be productive? Oh I don't know - maybe something to do with the economy being down the drain and it would be good if people didn't whinge about the cost of living crisis whilst wanting to take more and more time off.

@00100001 I have my own business and all it means is that all those people I want to speak to won't be at work so it stymies my productivity too.

Can you change your days?

WimbyAce · 06/11/2022 10:52

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 06/11/2022 10:50

Can you change your days?

Not easily as my childcare is all in place for my set days.

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2022 11:06

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 06/11/2022 10:02

What does your contract say about BHs?

I get 28 days including bank holidays.

Maverickess · 06/11/2022 11:07

Annie232 · 06/11/2022 09:55

jeez all those moaning about an extra days holiday 🙄

I'll be working harder to facilitate other people's enjoyment on this extra holiday, for no extra pay and no time off in leiu, so will many other people.

Don't resent that, it's my job, do resent the people who tell me how I should feel over an extra days holiday other people are getting that I won't be though.......

AliensAteMyHomework · 06/11/2022 11:11

So that's now a £52bn deficit we all have to pay for instead of £50bn. Great.

strawberrybarn · 06/11/2022 11:13

I am wondering what will happen with the exams in Scotland

Bank Holiday may 8th
Curtayne · 06/11/2022 11:14

I'll be on shift but excited for the uplift to pay.

PeeJayDay · 06/11/2022 11:15

The exams issue is concerning really isn't it especially for the older kids.

I bet a lot of kids will be a lot less concerned that their parents. At that age I'd have been over the flipping moon and not worried about the consquences. Come to think of it, I'm still a bit like that TBH.

Loads of self employed work on Bank Holidays

7eleven · 06/11/2022 11:41

I think it’s ridiculous to have an additional BH and I say that as a royalist. The extra one this year should have been a one off, to celebrate a unique event.

Three bank holidays in one month will cost self employed people so much money. Some employed people will have to use a day’s leave. It will disrupt exams. Children need to be in school. Services such as day facilities for the elderly will be cancelled etc.

Couldn't care less tbh.

It's one day.

Theimpossiblegirl · 06/11/2022 11:43

It just shows that our government doesn't even think about education.
I must admit, having the coronation in a Saturday seemed sensible because it would minimise disruption but not now they've still given an extra bank holiday. Completely unnecessary imo.

Badnewsoracle · 06/11/2022 11:44

Mrstumbletap · 06/11/2022 09:01

Why do we have to always be productive? The weather should be nice, and 4 day weeks will be happening three times for most.

Bring it on!!

Exactly! Rest is good.

SoupDragon · 06/11/2022 11:45

strawberrybarn · 06/11/2022 11:13

I am wondering what will happen with the exams in Scotland

Do they have a "contingency day" built on for just this sort of thing? They have a scheduled day for emergencies at the end of the exam period in England in case an examining board needs to change something.

Badnewsoracle · 06/11/2022 11:47

ManefesationofConciousness · 06/11/2022 10:34

Not all of them. Our builders, electricians, plumber, gardener and cleaner all work BHs.

Well I personally will not be affected, but am able to care about other people.
