Did anyone get that big £30 spider skeleton from Asda?

I'm so glad I clicked on this thread! I love jumping spiders, they are so cute.

To stop me being scared of spiders, Dad wrote me a poem about one. Then another. And another. She ended up at the World Cup, going on holiday, coming to school. They’re fab. The first one started

Samantha was a spider
She was coloured black and grey
Her eight legs were very long
But she liked them that way.

She lived in the corner
Of the bedroom in my house
It was always nice and dark there
And she was as quiet as a mouse.

Her web she spun from wall to wall
It reached down to the floor
Flies flew in, she’d dart out
She always wanted more.

And so on. I’d love to find an illustrator and publish them before he died (Samantha discovered she was a tarantula when her uncle arrived in the house on a bunch of bananas!)

Why are people like this? I used to keep pet rats, and people would think nothing of commenting about how they would deal with my pets if they found them in their house, or about how their precious cat would "love to play" with my rat. If you made even the vaguest reference to any harm coming to someone's cat or dog they'd go spare, but if your pet is a rat or a spider you're meant to just smile and laugh when people talk about killing them.

Well, this thread has been FABULOUS. Thank you all, especially the budding entemologists among you! (I almost put enterologists but that would be intestine experts ).

I am afraid of spiders. One day I saw a thread on MN called 'I have pet spiders AMA'.

I don't know why I clicked on it. And then I saw the OP's jumping spiders. This led me to watching jumping spiders on YouTube. Ever since then, whenever I've seen a real spider (you know, the scary dark looking ones) my reaction has been a lot less intense. And I try and think 'it's just like Lydia'. Free therapy 😂
