Did anyone get that big £30 spider skeleton from Asda?

I desperately want one. I couldn't find one before Halloween and was wondering if anyone would sell now that it's over?

The invasive ladybird is the harlequin, as well as the aggregation pheromones it will exude haemolymph from it's joints when disturbed, will cluster in houses to hibernate (and will return in successive years), will bite(!) in defense and to obtain salt(!!) and can cause allergic reactions.

NALBALT.🐞

My dd was away and she told me she was bitten by a ladybug. I was not convinced that it was in fact, a ladybird.......until now!

It is a bit of a joke here, I was bitten by a praying mantis and she by a ladybird..... and neither of us quite believed each other.😂

Spoodee · 07/11/2022 10:06

I nearly bought a mantis yesterday. Didn't realise they bit!

I believe you.

I have been bitten (or stung?) twice by shield bugs, which are, apparently, harmless; and according to Gardener's World, don't bite! They do!

MichelleScarn · 05/11/2022 19:46

Boooo! How do you know this isn't a newly discovered species? 😉

Fucking hope not, have you seen the size of it?????

IcakethereforeIam · 07/11/2022 10:10

Shield bugs are true bugs, they have sucking not biting mouthparts. So, if it's any consolation, GW was right, they can't bite. You were probably stabbed!

I am living proof that they do! And more than once too once they get stuck in there.

Three times the bugger bit me. Pain level was that of I would say, a bee sting.

Thank goodness I haven't had one of those as a bed partner. They are not cute in my opinion. Actually they give me the creeps, all this looking one way then the other.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 07/11/2022 10:16

Stabbed! With what @IcakethereforeIam ? Sharp mouth parts? Eek! 😲

One orange one got inside my top once when I was out, it probably panicked.
The other (green) landed on my hand as I was pushing a pushchair in Chinatown, Birmingham, and for no reason stabbed me. Totally unprovoked. Bastard.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/11/2022 10:20

@TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth Flowers I had no idea the could be so vicious! Little green Brummie bastard!

TerraNostra · 07/11/2022 10:26

OP, why are they happy to sit on your hands like that? Do you have to train them in some way? I always wondered the same about ladybirds, why they are fine to do that but something like a house spider would just scuttle off.

Also, if one does run off, would you have any chance of recapturing it?

Oioicaptain · 07/11/2022 18:20

Oo, Shield Bugs are amazing! I found a clutch of their eggs on the underside of a leaf and stuck them under a microscope. Each egg has a perfectly formed little hatch on the top that they lift up when they are ready to emerge. The eggs are florescent green.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/11/2022 19:56

@Oioicaptain your post reminded me of something, so I went a-googling. There's a native British shield bug, called the parent bug (should be called the mother bug imo), it broods its eggs and protects them from parasitic wasps and the like. This bit had me 😍

You can often find Parent Bugs on Silver birch leaves, sheltering or leading a gaggle of tiny youngsters.

I don't know how stabby they are.

Interesting facts about velvet spiders.

They die for their babies in a process called matriphagy, (translated to feed on mother)

When the babies are born the mums abdomen slowly starts to break down, so when she regurgitates to feed her babies she feeds them her own insides. They eventually just attack and eat her fully.

So they only ever have 1 set of babies and die for them.

That reminded me of a wildlife (probably Attenborough) I saw a few years ago of a spider with that type of life cycle. Can't remember the species. The cameraman had got a clever and frankly horrific shot of the mother spider's leg back-lit so you could see the haemolymph being drained out of it as her babies drank her to death.

And here's me complaining about stretch marks and a muffin top!

ADifferentKindOfWonderful · 08/11/2022 05:34

Things I never thought I'd say.... your spiders are beautiful. So cute. Who knew 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oioicaptain · 08/11/2022 14:57

Bloody hell, offspring that devour their own mother ... I might have to cut my kids some slack..at least they're not that bad.

Love the idea of the parent shield bug leading a gaggle of tiny youngsters. Off to Google it!

Wonderful video. Can we have one of Lydia pretty please? 😍

I'm still amazed how I can look at your spiders without getting that usual shivery feeling.

Do they ever run @Spoodee? She seems very calm in your video. And turns to look at you a lot!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 11/11/2022 22:00
