The Italian Job
Ghostbusters
Tequila Sunrise

These were in the days I still went to the cinema. Years ago. I didn't get the appeal of any of the foregoing. Is it just me ?

The Holiday

A580Hojas · 04/11/2022 18:38

Definitely Love Actually.

I last about 5 minutes with Mamma Mia Grin.

But loved La La Land.

Everybody saying Titanic and Dirty Dancing may well be because of your age. These films will be good when you are 13 but on watching in your 30s and up you might see it very differently and realise they are teen girl fantasy films and not up to the standard in your youth. The special effects in were impressive for its day but today look pretty bland and standard.

I'd also say that it's become pretty recognised now amongst critics and scholars that Titanic was largely overrated during its realise and in retro respective many critics have said it was rubbish. I recall Empire magazine changing their rating for it in the years after its release and it came number 1 in polls for the worst ever film.

It's not a film that has stood the test of time.

Love Actually is smug, misogynistic North London trash typical of Richard Curtis. The Keira Knightley scenes make my toes curl.

I agree with a poster above about '3 Billboards'. I found it quite dull. The Peter Dinklage plot felt tacked on, and I know everyone raves about Frances McDormand but I found her acting quite one note.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Spotlight has to be one of the most underwhelming films ever to win an Oscar. It's not a bad film, it just feels like it was made for daytime TV rather than Oscars standard.

Love star trek though

Hey it's healthy to keep the Star Trek Vs Star Wars battle going!! I'm Star Wars all the way.

I thought Mamma Mia was dreadful. And all the Tarantino films.

But I just watched a Bollywood action adventure on Disney, a new one that just turned up on my showreel of new films - omg why have I not seen Bollywood before. That was some experience.

KenickiesHickey · 04/11/2022 20:21

Even age 7 when Star Wars originally came out (film 1, now film 4) I thought it was boring.

Abracadabra12345 Hugh who? I don't see any Hugh's in the cast of Meet the Fockers

Abracadabra12345 Hugh who? I don't see any Hugh's in the cast of Meet the Fockers

Maybe it was autocorrected from "ugh"

Bonjovispjs · 05/11/2022 17:15

It's a wonderful life, what a pile of shit.

Abouttimemum · 05/11/2022 17:20

Lost in translation is easily the worst film I’ve ever watched and I absolutely love Bill Murray (as an actor)

My DH fell asleep which he never does. Awful.

UWhatNow · 05/11/2022 17:32

The Bodyguard was one that everyone I knew raved about - men and women. Just awful, with Whitney absolutely ruining Dolly Parton’s wonderful ‘I will always love you.’ I hate it every time I hear Huston yawping it out.

Titanic another one - Kate Winslet and Leo totally miscast. They look like mother and child so the sex scene is cringe.

Dirty Dancing was just creepy.

But you’re all wrong about Bridesmaids - it’s still brilliant, funny and a truly rare female-centred movie.

grayhairdontcare · 05/11/2022 18:12

All the Harry Potter films

LadyEloise1 · 05/11/2022 21:21

@UWhatNow
I totally agree that Kate Winslet and Leonardo were totally miscast. He looked far too young for it to be believable.

Mama Mia - awful.

mamabear715 · 05/11/2022 21:35

All of the above. Mind, I'm not a huge film buff. My faves are the 80's films.. Big, Labyrinth, The 'Burbs, Short Circuit, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Money Pit.. :-)

It's a wonderful life, what a pile of shit.

Exactly this, and that child’s squeaky voice “every time a bell rings…” I could slap them.

LunaLoveFood · 06/11/2022 09:59

Elf and love actually. I've never made it to the end of either of them.

majellalos · 06/11/2022 20:11

Dirty Dancing was just creepy

why? Baby's character was supposed to be 17/18 and she looked like an adult and Johnny's character was supposed to be 25ish. Quite common age gap back in the 60s as many women of that age would marry men older than them.

Riverlee · 06/11/2022 20:17

ET
La La land
The Piano
Four Weddings - film ok, apart from Andi Dowell didn’t work for me
Bill and Ted

IloveJudgeJudy · 06/11/2022 20:49

A PP said The Italian Job. Were you talking about the 60s film or the remake? The 60s film is imo great. The remake, pants.

IloveJudgeJudy · 06/11/2022 20:50

That was meant for @WildRosie

NemoNotThatOne · 03/11/2022 23:09

Pretty Woman, urgh.

I came on here to say this

Stoppissingonmyfuckingheather · 06/11/2022 23:44

Wow did schindlers list pulp fiction and forest gump all come out the same year? That was a good year!

barbrahunter · 07/11/2022 07:15

Mama Mia was so awful that I thought it was a joke at first.

majellalos · 07/11/2022 08:19

Wow did schindlers list pulp fiction and forest gump all come out the same year? That was a good year

no shindler's list came out in 93, the others came out in 94. To be fair up until the last decade or so with the internet and the birth of streaming tv every year was pretty much a good year for films because the big ones all appeared in cinema and everybody would generally know them. Every year you'd be sure to get your handful of classics or big hits. I could name a handful of films from the 60-mid 2000s that were great ones but wouldn't know any in the past 6-7 years really.

It's different now though as the cinema industry seems to have died down alot and everything seems to be streamed, covid didn't help either. So it's harder to know what the big hits are or access them if you don't have the streaming platform they are being sold to etc.
