The Italian Job
Ghostbusters
Tequila Sunrise

These were in the days I still went to the cinema. Years ago. I didn't get the appeal of any of the foregoing. Is it just me ?

I fell asleep during every single one of the Star Wars movies.

the blair witch project - just shit all round

The thing with The Blair Witch Project is that it's either terrifying for you, or boring for you. It relies completely on the atmosphere and the fear of the unknown. I'm a huge horror movie fan and I found this movie to be the only movie to ever actually scare me shitless. It creeps me out to watch these three people tumbling down into this abyss of fear and anxiety together, more than other horror movies. The fact that you know something is after them, but you don't what it is freaks me out even more. In the final scene, when you just see the guy standing in the corner and camera drops is what freaks me out the most. The fact that we don't know what happened to them; whether they're even dead at all, all we're left with is that they disappeared and this is what happened to them last. This movie uses the fear of the unknown to the best degree, it made people work and use their brains to become frightened rather than give them everything on a silver platter. It didn't rely on imagery, which is why it was praised by critics. I understand why people may dislike this movie, but you have to recall too that in 1999 there was no internet to check things and people genuinely believed this film to be real.

La La Land
Mamma Mia
Love Actually.

Songsareliketattoos · 04/11/2022 10:33

The Holiday. Irritating, lazy stereotyping & dull, predictable plot.

Anything with unnecessarily sadistic violence towards others, esp women; ditto unnecessary female nudity (naked woman randomly saunters into shot while man remains clothed etc); such lazy, mysognistic tropes that ruin otherwise OK films for me.

leilani83 · 04/11/2022 10:34

Another vote for Love Actually - awful, tacky and embarrassing on so many levels. Just wrong.

Moulin Rouge - lack of chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, boring superficial film, would have walked out if hadn't been there with a friend.

All Baz Luhrmann films actually, except maybe Romeo and Juliet which I quite liked (at the time).

The Princess Bride - seriously struggle to understand why so many people like it.

Love Actually

Steaming pile of self indulgent rubbish

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 04/11/2022 10:44

Gave up on The Notebook about 40 minutes in, just didn't get it.

rookiemere · 04/11/2022 10:46

Oh yes agree with a few of these.
Love actually- except the scenes with Emma Thompson
Bridesmaids- my friends were cackling away in the cinema, I thought it was truly ghastly

Most Hollywood films to be honest, I’m a bit of art house kind of gal.

I did give The Greatest Showman a go though, lasted 25 minutes before switching off.

The Greatest Showman was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Everyone seems to love it though and I can’t figure out why. I can’t even listen to the music from it, it sets my teeth on edge.

psycho2 · 04/11/2022 10:52

Bridesmaids- my friends were cackling away in the cinema, I thought it was truly ghastly

the humour was often offensive and crude so I can see why people wouldn't like it as it was marketed as a more light hearted fluffy film for women.I loved it, we studied it in our comedy module in university and because I thought it be a Jennifer Aniston type of film I thought it be rubbish but was surprised at how funny it was. Reminded me of Muriel's Wedding in that it didn't do what it said on the tin.

Redannie118 · 04/11/2022 10:53

The shawshank redemption- it seems to be everyones favourite movie, but I just find it really dull
The Notebook- Didnt care about anyone in that movie.
The way we were- on my god sooooooo boring.

CathyorClaire · 04/11/2022 10:54

Blair Witch took me a couple of watches to really get but the ending is one of the most chilling things I've seen.

I'll nominate:

Lost In Translation

La La Land - although the twist at the end almost makes up for the preceding hour and a half's pain.

Mr Turner

justcantgetenough · 04/11/2022 10:58

Loved The Greatest Showman saw it about 6 times at cinema! I just loved the song and dance routines and has to be seen on a big screen.

But I've only watched it once at home and fast forward the talking bits. Take out the songs and it's shit.

I hated Groundhog Day, everyone was laughing around me but I couldn't wait for it to be over.

La La Land watched it thinking it must get better at some point, nope.

CathyorClaire · 04/11/2022 10:59

Oh also

Breakfast at Tiffany's (poor cat) and It's A Wonderful Life.

milawops · 04/11/2022 10:59

The Blair witch project. I'm usually useless at coping with horror films but this was so boring and by half way through I was firmly on the side of the witch.

CathyorClaire · 04/11/2022 11:00

YY to Groundhog Day.

So lazy😬

peachescariad · 04/11/2022 11:01

La La land - complete tripe

Subbaxeo · 04/11/2022 11:02

Apocalypse Now. Still shudder.
La La Land
Railway Children

I loved A History of Violence though. Along with Eastern Promises-I thought I’d watch Vigo Mortensen in anything but the one where he was the father to the kids was a step too far.

orangeisthenewpuce · 04/11/2022 11:02

Mama Mia
Dirty Dancing
Harry Potter

Saving Private Ryan Blush I found it completely ridiculous that several soldiers were put at risk for the sake of traipsing all over to find one man.

But they actually did do that.

I love the cinema, our local film house rather than cineworld or vue. Were these what was showing the last time you went? 😱

Read the op again 🙄

Vanillarose1 · 04/11/2022 11:16

Mamma Mia - a cringeworthy waste of an excellent cast.

The Lord of The Rings - fell asleep in the cinema and it wasn't even nighttime!

Moulin Rouge - desperately wanted to love this as I'm a big fan of Chicago and hoped it would be just as good. Have tried three times to watch it and have to turn it off as it is just so bad!!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/11/2022 11:25

Another vote for Bridesmaids - went in with high hopes as people were saying it was hilarious. Thought it was really really boring. Don't mind offensive humour but just found it so dull.
