The Italian Job
Ghostbusters
Tequila Sunrise

These were in the days I still went to the cinema. Years ago. I didn't get the appeal of any of the foregoing. Is it just me ?

Did Green Book really win the Oscar for best film or is my imagination exaggerating? Because not only was it not the best film of whatever year, it was literally one of the worst films I've ever seen.

It really did.

And this was made all the more worse by the fact it beat Blackkklansman. Yes its a very dark film, it's an extremely good film, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again but it is at least focused on the black persons experience of racism which is were the focus should be.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 04/11/2022 00:16

Four weddings. Love actually. Titanic. Anything Star Wars or comic-character related.

ET -- was finally forced to watch it earlier this year; stupidest thing I've ever seen.

mondaytosunday · 04/11/2022 00:17

La La Land. Average at best.

mathanxiety · 04/11/2022 00:20

YYY to Ghostbusters.

PermanentTemporary · 04/11/2022 06:39

Loved Blackkklansman. It seemed to disappear at the cinema, not sure if it made any money. It's such a solidly made, entertaining, thoughtful adult film.

TheWolves · 04/11/2022 06:48

I knew I was going to see Titanic on here. I absolutely love it to bits!

I can't stand The Notebook. I love a bit of romance normally, but this was just sentimental guff. Bad acting too.

I love the cinema, our local film house rather than cineworld or vue. Were these what was showing the last time you went? 😱

The last film I saw at the cinema was Crimson Tide, about 27 years ago. It was a good film but not so good as to make cinema-going a pastime. The three films I mentioned I have seen on television and they didn't live up to the hype, particularly the Italian Job and Ghostbusters.

Blazing Saddles is another. It has its moments but is otherwise dull. I haven't seen any of the Back To The Future or Top Gun films; I wonder how they would stack up?

OP posts:
FuckabethFuckor · 04/11/2022 08:43

All Bond films, with the possible exception of Live and Let Die, Goldeneye, and Casino Royale.

FuckabethFuckor · 04/11/2022 08:43

Ah now you see I adore Blazing Saddles.

hairyunicorn · 04/11/2022 08:44

the blair witch project - just shit all round

Manchester by the Sea
Three Billboards etc.
1917
Get Out

I am definitely different from most people who seem to really rate these films and I just didn't get the hype at all.

Loved these but hated The Titanic..just couldn't care one whit about the characters as they were so annoying.
Fond of Forest Gump but wouldn't want to watch it again.
As for the Banshee one. The acting and setting was brilliant: the story line..no!!

NeedWineNow · 04/11/2022 09:21

Raging Bull
Forrest Gump

I seem to be one of those people where anything that is critically acclaimed leaves me cold, whereas if the critics hate it I love it!

Hbh17 · 04/11/2022 09:30

Titanic
Lord of the Rings
Grease (but it's actually so bad that it becomes good, so it can stay!)

newnamethanks · 04/11/2022 09:50

I'm not a great film fan. Bumped into a neighbour the other night, he was looking a bit stunned. He's an art house, small film fan. "I've just been to a special screening at the Film Society. 3 hours!" Oh. What did you see? "A film by a Japanese director. It was a Korean version of a Chekhov (Russian) play. Oscar winner". I think I've got all the nationalities straight. Sounds like a lot of effort. I'm shortly going to see an AmDram production of The Producers. I expect to have a far better time than he did.

AffIt · 04/11/2022 09:58

OP, I'm afraid you're wrong about Ghostbusters (the original version), as that is clearly the best film ever made.

A few I have been baffled by, though:

The Shawshank Redemption: it's so slooooooow. I do not believe anybody could honestly watch this all the way through without being heavily sedated.

Titanic: #TeamIceberg from about five minutes in.

Wonder Woman: was very disappointed that I didn't enjoy this, but the gaping holes in the storyline were just too distracting.

The English Patient: as PPs have said, three hours of my life that I'll never get back (felt like 30).

Anything with Kate 'I only have two expressions' Beckinsale in it.

Yes - I went to see this THREE TIMES at the cinema, as I just didn't get it and I really wanted to know what everybody was seeing that I was missing.

Still don't get it. It's about as frightening as an untied shoelace.

LadyApplejack · 04/11/2022 10:05

Bridesmaids. Just wasn't funny at all
Inception. Boring and forgettable
Elf. Annoying
Finding Nemo. I remember it was HUGE when it came out but doesn't compare to Incredibles and Monsters Inc

upinaballoon · 04/11/2022 10:09

The Revenant

That one that came out after lockdown, with Denzel's son in it and everything went backwards and I paid to see it in order to support the cinema industry and what a waste of my time it was.

psycho2 · 04/11/2022 10:09

Re watched Reservoir Dogs recently with the children, what a pile of poo. Hasn’t aged well at all

I think Tarantino though is a marmite director, you'll either get his work and like it or you won't. I don't really like his films so never got the big appeal.

MrsAvocet · 04/11/2022 10:11

I fell asleep during the latest Top Gun. The original was rubbish too of course but it had a good soundtrack and reminds me of my youth whereas the new one has no such saving graces.

DesMoulinsRouge · 04/11/2022 10:13

I don't like anything set in a Marvel/DC universe or anything involving super powers or some kind of tortured vigilante.
They don't even have plots. It's just hours of stunts that aren't even stunts.

The best superhero movie is lego batman.

bakermummy21 · 04/11/2022 10:14

Agree. The Revenant. I liked La La Land the first time but got a bit bored the 2nd time. Same with titanic but love Mama Mia!

psycho2 · 04/11/2022 10:16

Was The History of Violence popular? I thought it was unbelievably stupid and boring but the reviews are slavering. Odd

it was highly popular with critics but it didn't do that well in the box office, it flopped in USA. I agree with you. I never understood what was so praised about it, it was so disappointing and yet it was named as 1 of the best films of the century.

psycho2 · 04/11/2022 10:24

Muriel's wedding: treated her wheelchair using friend appallingly, mother is in abusive relationship and dies, yet so many people think it's a great feelgood film

there are feelgood elements to it but I think the film's fault was that it was marketed inappropriately. People expected it to be a Sleepless in Seattle type film but it wasn't a traditional rom com and went off in directions you'd not expect bringing in tragedy and reality rather than Hollywood traditional script.

I loved it, brilliant acting, great dark humour and it remained so real and relatable. The characters were supposed to be real remember, not typical Rom Com characters. Your reasons for disliking the film aren't really good reasons just because you didn't think the characters were saints.
