Best and worse fictional couples?

Best:

Friends Monica and Richard. I know it's controversial because he knew her as a child but I LOVE him. Stable, wise, funny and non dramatic. He was so much better for her than man baby Chandler.

Notting Hill Anna and Will. Such a lovely, happy ending.

Titanic Jack and Rose. He brought out her fun side and she fulfilled him... there was room on that floating door though! Should have tried harder.

Worst:

ER Doug and Carol. She takes an overdose because of him treating her like shit, they still keep up the on again off again bollocks. She ends up raising two kids alone then randomly turns up in Seattle and they live happily ever after? Nah. A more believable version would be turning up in Seattle to find him shagging someone else.

OFAH Rodney and Cassandra. She turned him into a snob who looked down on his own family, he was funnier when he was young and dippy. Also an ambitious bank manager with wealthy parents marrying someone who flogs knocked off tat from a suitcase? I doubt it.

Grease Danny and Sandy. The whole thing. Change your appearance and personality to suit someone else... then you'll get your man 👍🤔

Sandy & Danny. Hate that he only liked her when she basically changed everything about herself.

Why do people keep saying this when it’s not true, did you not watch the movie? If anything, HE put in the effort to change for HER!!.

BEFORE Sandy had her makeover, Danny decided he wanted to win her back so to prove he was serious about cleaning up his act he decided to try out for multiple sports & cut down on his smoking & drinking. He eventually LETTERED in track, that means he reached the highest level squad at his high school, the Varsity team. This means he reached a level good enough to compete in regional & state competition; he would have had to put in a hell of a lot of work, dedication & training to achieve that during senior year because even if he did have a natural talent for it, he still would have had to turn up to all practices (some early morning), meets etc to get the points to earn his letter. Danny literally tells Putzie, Sonny & Doody that while they were out stealing hubcaps he was training & that although they meant a lot to him, so did Sandy & he would do whatever he could to get her back. He knew talk was cheap so worked hard & finally made his reveal by wearing the letterman sweater he earned to the carnival so she could see that he had put in the time & effort to change. It was right after this that she came out all dolled up so HE NEVER WANTED HER TO CHANGE

Rant over 🤣

This this this

You saved me typing that very argument 😁

Another vote for Allison and Joe from Medium. They were just so normal, the only couple who regularly fill the dishwasher and change the bedding.

Fizzysister · 29/10/2022 03:17

Best- June and John Dory (FearTWD), Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter (TFA)

Worst- Steve and Sharon (whichever Marvel movie that happened in)

AssumingDirectControl · 29/10/2022 03:53

Many of mine have been mentioned, particularly David and Patrick from Schitts creek. Less keen on Alexis and Ted.

I’ll add Joel and Sheila from Santa Clarita Diet as best, also from Brooklyn 99 Holt and Kevin.

Wasn't keen on any of Joey’s relationships in Friends, especially Rachel (why?!) and Charlie. Also can’t stand Joker/Harley Quinn, it gets glamorised and it’s dysfunctional.

OohMrBingley · 29/10/2022 04:04

It is true that Danny tried to change for Sandy, but you’re left with this really sour taste in your mouth, because Sandy is lovely just as she is, and she does completely change for him.

Just because he tried to change first, doesn’t make her awful transformation any better.

RedRec · 28/10/2022 19:03

Best: Jay and Gloria in Modern Family.
Worst: Phoebe and David in Friends. Very glad she ended up with Mike.

I disagree. She and David were both quirky together, Mike would want her to be normal after the honeymoon phase.

Bookaholic73 · 28/10/2022 19:41

Best:

Buffy & Spike. Much better suited than Buffy & Spike.
Piper & Leo (Charmed).

Worst:
Sandy & Danny. Hate that he only liked her when she basically changed everything about herself.

But he didn't. He changed for her too.

WinterCarlisle · 29/10/2022 07:25

Best:
Joyce and Hopper from Stranger Things
Charlie and Duffy from Casualty
Amy and Sheldon from TBBT
Riker and Troi in Picard
Laszlo and Nadja from WWDITS
Sol and Robert from Grace and Frankie

Worst:
Bernadette and Howard in TBBT

notprincehamlet · 29/10/2022 08:36

Best - Johnny and Moira Rose (Schitts Creek) and Howard and Hilda (Ever Decreasing Circles)
Worst - Tom and Barbara Good (The Good Life) and Raymond and Deborah (Everybody Loves Raymond)

AssumingDirectControl · 29/10/2022 08:37

Joyce and Hopper from Stranger Things

Noooo. Bob forever!

Ross and Rachel. She should have gone to Paris, I just didn't believe in their reunion in the final episode.

The idea of her working in France without one word a French was absolutely laughable. It would've made much more sense if she was coming to London.

Wishimaywishimight · 29/10/2022 08:43

Ally McBeal and Larry Paul (Robert Downey Junior) - great chemistry.

Joey and Pacey, of course "I remember everything."

Lorelei and Luke - when she sang "I will always love you" at karaoke ❤

Wishimaywishimight · 29/10/2022 08:43

Katie and Hubble in The Way we Were.

WinterCarlisle · 29/10/2022 08:47

@AssumingDirectControl ahhhhhh Bob was excellent wasn’t he? But Hopper…………..❤️

Wishimaywishimight · 29/10/2022 08:51

Worst;
Leonard and Penny in BBT, I never saw any chemistry, she treated him like a pet.
Rory and Logan - she was weak and he was arrogant. In the reboot he was engaged (I think) and she was still seeing him. Rory as an adult really disappointed me.

Best;
Adam and Karen in Cold Feet - I didn't expect to like them together but I did.

Orangestrap · 29/10/2022 08:59

Best -
Robin and Barney - How I met your mother (much better suited than Ted)
Sheldon & Amy - BBT
All the couples in Schitts Creek except Alexis and Ted / the other guy who got written out of it whose name I can't recall
I don't even actually think Rachel & Joey were the worse couple - at least he seemed to like her and not want to control her (I know controversial :)

SeasonsHeatings · 29/10/2022 09:22

Best: Roy and Hayley - Coronation Street

upinaballoon · 29/10/2022 11:03

SimonandGarfunkel · 28/10/2022 20:56

Best - Jean Paget and Joe Harman

Worst - Rose and Jack

What a treat to find Jean Paget and Joe Harmon here. Ah, lovely book.

EloiseSpats · 29/10/2022 11:35

Best : Chuck and Sarah in Chuck. I'm still not over that ending.

Worst: Agree with so many already posted, but adding an honourable mention for Emma and Mr Knightly because I always find the paternalism just a bit too ick, despite my continuing love for Jane Austen in general

TheRossatron · 29/10/2022 11:37

The Rachel and Joey thing was ridiculous, she just wouldn't have gone there! Worst storyline of the entire (brilliant) show.

HauntersGonnaHaunt · 29/10/2022 15:31

CaptBuckyOHare · 28/10/2022 22:39

Best:
Gomez & Morticia Addams
Leslie Knope & Ben Wyatt (Parks & Rec)
Shrek & Fiona

How did I forget about Morticia and Gomez? They're so in love with each other.

DatasCat · 29/10/2022 17:04

Worst: just about every Charles Dickens hero and the dreadful, insipid Mary Sues they get married off to in the end. You can tell Dickens had a big problem with women even by the standards of the time. Great Expectations is the big exception, all the better for resisting the lure of the happy ending.

Can’t think of a best coupling at the moment, but I’d love to read a retelling of Mansfield Park with Julia Bertram’s elopement as its main focus. I think she’d be a very interesting character to explore.

dementedma · 29/10/2022 17:06

Best Jean and Lionel from As Time Goes By.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 29/10/2022 17:30

Best and worst depending on which series you were watching:
Maddie and David from Moonlighting.

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 29/10/2022 18:19

Am I the only one who liked Bella & Edward?! She was obsessed with him & dumped her friends for him, true, but he was obsessed with her too! He'd never wanted a humans blood more & even managed to snog her (& more!) 'coz that's how much he loved her!
