Best and worse fictional couples?

Best:

Friends Monica and Richard. I know it's controversial because he knew her as a child but I LOVE him. Stable, wise, funny and non dramatic. He was so much better for her than man baby Chandler.

Notting Hill Anna and Will. Such a lovely, happy ending.

Titanic Jack and Rose. He brought out her fun side and she fulfilled him... there was room on that floating door though! Should have tried harder.

Worst:

ER Doug and Carol. She takes an overdose because of him treating her like shit, they still keep up the on again off again bollocks. She ends up raising two kids alone then randomly turns up in Seattle and they live happily ever after? Nah. A more believable version would be turning up in Seattle to find him shagging someone else.

OFAH Rodney and Cassandra. She turned him into a snob who looked down on his own family, he was funnier when he was young and dippy. Also an ambitious bank manager with wealthy parents marrying someone who flogs knocked off tat from a suitcase? I doubt it.

Grease Danny and Sandy. The whole thing. Change your appearance and personality to suit someone else... then you'll get your man 👍🤔

Linda and Fabrice, so romantic when he turns up at Cheyne Walk to tell her he loves her.

Yes.
‘The Sunday silence was broken by two swans swinging slowly upstream, and then by the chugging of a little barge, while she waited for that other sound, a sound more intimately connected with the urban love affair than any except the telephone bell, that of a stopping taxicab.’

@TottersBlankly - you got there before me for best - Lord Peter & Harriet Vane. I came across Dorothy L Sayers books as a 14-year old (via the pretty good 80's BBC series with Harriet Walter & Edward Petherbridge - so gutted they never got to make Busman's Honeymoon) and it really influenced my views on marriage & relationships.

@TheFallenMadonna - Carolyn and Herc is also a great call. Though I'm glad Martin found his Princess from Liechtenstein.

Also agree with @Purpleavocado@Purpleavocado@Purpleavocado Chrichton and Aeryn Sun.

All women with opinions who expect an equal relationship.

Best: Anne and Gilbert, Bobby and Pam.
Worst: Tess and hideous Angel.

I bloody hated Angel.

Best: Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo's swoon characters in 13 Going on 30

Butterbeer4All · 28/10/2022 23:23

Best - David and Patrick, Schitts Creek

11GrumpsaGrumping · 28/10/2022 23:37

Best:
Mike & Susan from Desperate Housewives!

Worst:
Leonard & Penny and also Howard & Bernadette from TBBT

FifteenMinutesOfMeTime · 28/10/2022 23:43

Best:

Faramir and eowyn.
Willow and the werewolf musician. Forgot his name. Was it Seth? (Buffy the vampire slayer)
Monica and Richard (in spite of the creepiness of him knowing her as a child, and the barfness of her later kissing his son)
Jamie and Brienne in game of thrones (though I thought it made perfect sense that he went back to cersei in the end)
Arondir and Bronwyn in rings of power (except for episode 7, where they grate on me).

Worst:

Edward and Bella from twilight. There's just so much wrong here. Especially with him. He looks angry and as if he hates her (or something, it's been a decade or so that I've read the books) whenever he sees her because he is so overwhelmed with emotion? Watches her while sleeping? Goes to Italy to get killed because their relationship doesn't work out? I almost want DD to read the book so I discuss every red flag in the history of humankind with her.

Rose and Jack from titanic. Who cares what happens throughout the movie. Why on earth didn't she share her raft with him? If she hadn't jumped out of the rescue boat in the first place he'd have had that whole raft to himself and might have survived.

True. But given your name i can’t believe you haven’t mentioned Tom and Joyce! Joyce totally made the show for me.

Joyce lit up every scene she was in. My favourite was when she is caught burying a body and she said something like "don't worry. I'm just burying the body".

Pansypotter123 · 28/10/2022 23:55

Best: Vera and Jack Duckworth; Samson and Delilah
Worst: Romeo and Juliet

countrypunk · 28/10/2022 23:57

Best: Sharon Watts and Dennis Rickman in Eastenders.

Can't believe no one has mentioned them yet.

countrypunk · 29/10/2022 00:01

Oh and WORST OF THE WORST: Cameron Diaz and Jude Law in The Holiday. I can't watch them without wanting to puke all over the telly.

Also, Jude Law and every woman he was paired with in Alfie.

Maybe I just hate Jude Law.

PimmsOfCourse · 29/10/2022 00:09

Best - Alex's Carrington and Dex.
Worst- Blake Carrington and Krystle

Good to find a fellow fan of Joyce. I especially loved the classic episode in which Tom and the one that wasn’t Troy or Jones got stuck in a wine cellar overnight so Joyce went to a party on her own and had a great time. Then, when not-Troy-or-Jones phoned her on their escape to tell her Tom was ok she just asked him to tell Tom to pick up yogurt on his way home. She was perfect.

GlitchStitch · 29/10/2022 00:28

Can't believe I forgot Katniss and Peta (best obviously!)
Katniss and Gale was the worst.
Also Pretty Little Liars-
Hannah and Caleb the best
Spencer and Caleb the worst, hated this pairing

LadyWithLapdog · 29/10/2022 00:29

Edward Petherbridge was perfect casting as LPW, but I thought they really flunked it when it came to Gaudy Night.

Umanresources · 29/10/2022 00:39

Grease Danny and Sandy. The whole thing. Change your appearance and personality to suit someone else... then you'll get your man 👍🤔

Sandy & Danny. Hate that he only liked her when she basically changed everything about herself.

Why do people keep saying this when it’s not true, did you not watch the movie? If anything, HE put in the effort to change for HER!!.

BEFORE Sandy had her makeover, Danny decided he wanted to win her back so to prove he was serious about cleaning up his act he decided to try out for multiple sports & cut down on his smoking & drinking. He eventually LETTERED in track, that means he reached the highest level squad at his high school, the Varsity team. This means he reached a level good enough to compete in regional & state competition; he would have had to put in a hell of a lot of work, dedication & training to achieve that during senior year because even if he did have a natural talent for it, he still would have had to turn up to all practices (some early morning), meets etc to get the points to earn his letter. Danny literally tells Putzie, Sonny & Doody that while they were out stealing hubcaps he was training & that although they meant a lot to him, so did Sandy & he would do whatever he could to get her back. He knew talk was cheap so worked hard & finally made his reveal by wearing the letterman sweater he earned to the carnival so she could see that he had put in the time & effort to change. It was right after this that she came out all dolled up so HE NEVER WANTED HER TO CHANGE

Rant over 🤣

THANK YOU!!

I am forever saying that Danny did try to change first!

Zosime · 29/10/2022 01:44

Edward Petherbridge was perfect casting as LPW

Edward Petherbridge was excellent, but Miss Climpson was totally wrong.

pigalow27 · 29/10/2022 01:52

Best - Cormoran Strike and Robin

pigalow27 · 29/10/2022 01:54

Oh and Emily and Gabriel. Totally ship them

Worst - Loki and Sylvie in the Loki series - just WHY?!

Yes!

Surely you would if you could though. I mean you wouldn’t have to worry about anything - you’d both just know instinctively what the other was into.

I agree with Jaime and Brienne - they changed each other and like grew together.

I’d add Gendry & Arya. I smugly predicted to DH before the last series came out that they’d end up married and King & Queen of Westeros, fulfilling Robert’s statement in the very first episode that ‘I have a son, you have a daughter, we’ll join our houses.’ Obviously I was wrong but that’s not the point.

I always liked Seth & Summer. They both seemed bit spoiled and shallow, but underneath it they were decent sorts and they had loads of chemistry.

My least favourites -

anything from TBBT. No good relationships in that.

Sticking with marvel as above, Sharon and Steve. I know it was just one kiss, but then he went back in time and married Peggy! What the fuck did he say at his baby niece’s birth? Absolute joke.

Probably Buffy and Angel too, despite it being one my favourite shows of all time! I rewatched it recently and remember the episode in early Buffy, I think s2, where Cordelia goes to talk to Angel while he’s waiting for Buffy and he’s smiling/laughing. Which he never did when they were together. And Buffy seemed to have more actual passion with Spike. Buffy and Angel never actually seemed to enjoy each others company at all. He seemed better with Cordelia, and she with Spike or literally anyone but him. I always think if a couple don’t have any fun at all ever together it just doesn’t do it for me.

Best: Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo's swoon characters in 13 Going on 30

When she drags him onto the dance floor to do Thriller and he goes ‘why are you doing this to me?!’ 😂 😂
