Ford Fiesta to be axed

Has anyone heard that Ford are set to axe the beloved Ford Fiesta? I feel quite emotional having owned a few in the past. My first car was a mark 3 model.

It's very sad. I'm 39 and learning I'm getting one as my first car! Great first car to have.

I'm not surprised, back in the day they were a really good, cheap first car. Now they're really expensive. I don't think it's anything to do with small cars being less popular, people want small cars because they're cheaper in every way and if you google it everything that comes up says people want smaller, cheaper, greener cars. The problem is the Fiesta is no longer cheap and so no longer popular IMO. If less small cars are being made then it's because there's less mark up on them - it's about profit for the company and nothing else.

It’s still popular But you’re right the profit margin won’t be as great.

I'm on my second Fiesta at the moment - both purchased 2nd hand and driven until they get too expensive to repair. As everyone has said, they last for ages, are easy to repair, and quite nippy and fun to drive, and have loads of boot space. My current one is badged as an eco-boost, which seems to mean it is fuel-efficient enough for there to be no road tax. I'm really sad to hear that it will be my last!

Way back in the 1970s my Dad worked on the engineering for the Fiesta prototype ( another company, not Ford). At the time he maintained that they were the best engineered car on the market. Unlikely nowadays. But still good cars.

S max too? That's a blow. You don't get much better for bigger families than an S Max.

Yup we have one as we camp and move my work stuff in it. Apparently something to do with moving to only full electric cars. The Facebook is going nuts as it’s a Cmax Smax galaxy kinda fan group. They mod them up and everything.

flowerycurtain · 26/10/2022 17:58

I'm gutted by this. I love my wee fiesta. So fun to drive and I can fit 4 kids in and a dog! Also very fuel efficient.

But most of all it makes me smile every day when I nip into the smallest spaces in the school car park and feel like I'm winning at life when all the great big 4x4's are going round and round.

We have a beautiful 1988 Fiesta XR2. Both DH and I have had various classics over the years but the fiesta, without doubt, is the one that makes everyone smile.
Wherever we go people peep, pull alongside and give us a thumbs up, take photos etc. The reaction to it is phenomenal. It's the car everyone knew from their childhood.
It's a sad day.

Oh wow, I love seeing old cars from my childhood on the road. I saw a Sierra Estate a while back, it was so surreal.

Might be worth hanging on to your Fiestas!

I think the fiesta is the car you’ll prise out of dh’s cold dead hands 😂
He had the MK1 XR2 as a teenager and was desperate for a newer MK2 just as insurance began to rocket for young lads so he was priced out of it. It’s taken him a few years to get the one he wanted so he’ll never part with it.
Problem is he’s now looking at adding a MK 3….

lots of late 80s cars were unfortunately lost to the scrappage scheme and crushed which is why seeing cars like Sierra Estates etc is such a rarity 😢

SnarkyBag · 26/10/2022 18:24

Well whatever you do don’t buy a Ford Eco sport which is their fiesta based small SUV it’s an absolute dog of a car. Have no idea how Ford got that one so wrong!

SkylightSkylight · 27/10/2022 08:46

@FuckabethFuckor it was your first 'grown up ' car? What did you have before the Fiesta?

i hadn't heard they're axing the focus too, surely not??

First grown-up car as in sporty/hot hatchback. It was the ST with the 150bhp engine. It was bloody brilliant.

I'd had a couple of cars before that but they were new driver low insurance specials. The Fiesta was the first car I bought from a dealership (albeit used).

Yes, Focus is going too. Production stops in 2024 I think. Mondeo has already gone and they're stopping S-Max and Galaxy at the same time as the Fiesta.

It does make you wonder what Fords people are buying. The Puma and Kuga do okay but they can't be propping up the company on their own. Maybe it's truck sales in the US; the Ranger and F-150 do huge volume over there I think.

Stellaris22 · 27/10/2022 09:53

It looks like they are going to axe the Focus too, we have the estate version and absolutely love ours. Plan on driving it till it dies and its been our only car, its reliable and efficient and has loads of space when transporting our huge canvas tents. No way could an SUV have the same space that we need. Its sad.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 27/10/2022 10:28

They must surely be bringing out something else to replace, they can't get rid of all that lot and not replace, that's all the normal cars from single person through couple with a small child or 2 up to family needing to fit 3 teens in the back plus camping gear!

I may be feeling sensitive, we only just replaced our old zafira with an S Max 3 months ago and it was glorious. We went for 2 weeks in the South of France without needing to put anything in the footwells at all. It got in an accident at the weekend (everybody is OK and absolutely not our fault) and it highly likely to be a write off.

@FuckabethFuckor oh I see, just for many of us the fiesta was what we learnt in/had as first cars (mine was actually a Ford Escort) they were our low cost/low insurance cars 🤣. Not fancy ones from a showroom though, that's for sure!!

i suppose that's going to ramp up the used price ridiculously too. I think I'll get a newer one (but not brand new) this year <sigh>

im not swapping from Ford until I know another make is using the Ford window de icing/fogging system. It is A MAY ZING!!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 27/10/2022 10:50

I too am a slave to the heated windscreen. When my old car died I was doing a long commute that involved getting up at 5am and I refused point blank to consider anything without one. I get reynauds so it really is marvelous.

I have an 18 plate fiesta so hopefully has plenty of life left in it, it was a bargain, picked it up when it was just a year old so I pretty much got a brand new car that someone else paid all the depreciation on.

Rummikub · 27/10/2022 12:43

do you think they will replace those cars fir something similar? I hope so as I’m really not keen on an suv type option.

Also how long till petrol cars will be banned- if ever? Trying to work out what to get next.

No , not at all. I think small cars are on their way out, petrol and diesel are definitely on their way out. Your choice will be from electric cars of medium and large sizes in the future. They’ll be more expensive to buy and god knows how much to run.

QuebecBagnet · 27/10/2022 15:20

@Stellaris22 weve got a focus estate and an Astra estate. Love both, particularly the focus. Love estates, they’re perfect for transporting heavy loads, I get my bike in and out no problem, dog can jump up.

i might get a transit van for my next car if I can’t get an estate. Don’t want an suv.

Confuzzlediddled · 27/10/2022 15:23

I had an F reg fiesta, used to regularly get to work 15 miles away and realise I still had the choke out 🤣 I locked my keys in more times than I care to remember too, I loved her though!

That’s my worry.

A small car like a fiesta is affordable. I can’t justify spending more. And I have a long commute to another city, no direct train as it was removed.

I wonder if carparks will change their space sizes accordingly?
