Ford Fiesta to be axed

Has anyone heard that Ford are set to axe the beloved Ford Fiesta? I feel quite emotional having owned a few in the past. My first car was a mark 3 model.

Well the current Ford KA is the same size as a Ford Fiesta. So it looks like they will still make them under the KA name.

QuebecBagnet · 26/10/2022 13:11

I wonder if this will be the death knell for other small cars. Apparently because the car engine parts, etc are increasing in cost car manufacturers aren’t making the Same profit on a small car as a bigger, more expensive part. And nobody wants to pay 30k for a fiesta. And it’s meant to be even worse regarding profits when it comes to small, electric cars.

So really another victim of spiralling costa. So what are new drivers going to drive? Young people, single people, elderly? Not everyone needs a bigger and more expensive car with increased running costs.

Fairyliz · 26/10/2022 13:13

Nooo, I’m not at all interested in cars all I want is one that starts when I turn the ignition and gets me from A to B relatively cheaply, which the fiesta does. I did try a corsa a few years ago but hated it as it exacerbated an existing shoulder injury.

What on earth am I going to do now I know nothing about cars.

I thought they’d already stopped making the Ka? They’ve said the Puma will be their smallest car?

Stellaris22 · 26/10/2022 13:17

We have a Focus but a friend has had their very reliable Fiesta for years, it's a fantastic car and it's so sad to hear Ford will stop making them.

I love hatchbacks, they're fun and so much nicer than hideous SUVs.

QuebecBagnet · 26/10/2022 13:18

Looking at their website now. No Ka in the range. A new fiesta starts at 18k, then a puma at 24k. Sad times, I think it’s the beginning of the end of small, cheaper cars.

jtaeapa · 26/10/2022 13:24

My first car was an old fiesta as well.

Silly decision IMO. The puma is much larger. If you can't get a ford fiesta and want one, you're more likely to buy a comparable little car like a vw polo or skoda fabia than buying a massive ford puma

FuckabethFuckor · 26/10/2022 13:31

Ahhh yeah it's a shame. My first 'grown-up' car was a Fiesta ST 150, I loved hoofing that little thing around the lanes of Lancashire. Still one of the most finely balanced cars I've ever had.

I think the issue is that small cars don't do the volume, and the profit margins are so thin, that they're increasingly loss leaders. Everyone's buying crossovers and SUVs.

Ford has now axed the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo — all due to slow sales. It seems like all its 'ordinary' cars have gone, and all it will sell is trucks and SUVs (and the Mustang, although how long that will last is anyone's guess).

I mean, the Puma is barely an SUV. It's a fat hatchback with pretensions. But it's still heavier, bulkier and less useful than a Fiesta. (It's actually based on the Fiesta platform, so technically it's the same car.) But it also carries a six grand premium, which is probably very handy for Ford.

The ka is horrid

small boot, bucket seat and not height adjustable. The I tried anyway.

Chances are the Polo and Fabia will stop being manufactured before long.

Rummikub · 26/10/2022 13:40

I have a fiesta and I love it. I was wanting to replace it with an electric version. So now I’m. It sure what going to do

i agree with pp that said it’s about profit margins. Math up on suv is much higher than a little car.

I hate suvs and wish the style would go out of fashion. What electric car is there thats comparable to fiesta in price and size?

Fiestas are nippy, reliable and fun to drive. Mine has done over 110 000 miles and is so reliable.

FuckabethFuckor · 26/10/2022 13:40

I'm also sad that sporty little hot hatches have gone. You used to have a real choice; Fiesta ST, Corsa GSI/VXR, Twingo/Clio RS, 206/207/208 GTI, Ibiza Cupra, Saxo/C2 VTS.

Now the Fiesta's gone your options are basically a Polo GTI, which is a bit polite to be any good, or a Hyundai i20 N which is technically brilliant but rather complicated.

FuckabethFuckor · 26/10/2022 13:42

Not much. The Ora Funky Cat is probably the closest. There's apparently a VW ID.2 on the way.

Beyond that, a Fiat 500 maybe; the new version of that is all electric. Mini Electric, Honda e although that is bonkers expensive for a small car (it's good though).

You'd struggle to get a fully electric car for the same price as a standard fiesta. I've just gone from a Fiesta active to a Peugeot 208 electric, that was £33k my fiesta was £22k. However I much prefer the Peugeot over my previous fiesta and the one before that. Roomier, nicer to drive, automatic engine.

I had ordered a Ford puma but it was taking too long to get here so I cancelled it. Glad I did now as I parked my fiesta active next to a puma and it was no difference in length or height but it was going to cost more money.

123ZYX · 26/10/2022 13:51

My finance is running out on my Clio. I was going to replace with something of a similar size but there's barely any options so I've ended up paying off the balloon payment and keeping it.

I often need to park in small awkward car parks and don't have much luggage so a small car is ideal. I can't be the only one who doesn't change car (or buys second hand) instead of buying a new SUV.

The Panda seems much closer to a Kuga than a Fiesta and the Ka is much more basic than a fiesta used to be. It seems a really odd choice

Rummikub · 26/10/2022 13:51

Thanks for that info. I might see what the new. Vw is like.

Fiesta is such a good price point though. And doesn’t feel excessive but does the job.

Choconut · 26/10/2022 13:57

I'm not surprised, back in the day they were a really good, cheap first car. Now they're really expensive. I don't think it's anything to do with small cars being less popular, people want small cars because they're cheaper in every way and if you google it everything that comes up says people want smaller, cheaper, greener cars. The problem is the Fiesta is no longer cheap and so no longer popular IMO. If less small cars are being made then it's because there's less mark up on them - it's about profit for the company and nothing else.

cinnabongene · 26/10/2022 14:01

Aw what a shame. DH has always had a Fiesta (just loves them) and I've got a Focus. They are so reliable and easy to drive.

RedBullRacingReserveDriver · 26/10/2022 14:03

It's sad :( I learned to drive in a fiesta. Every single time my car has been changed, it's been upgraded to a newer fiesta. I've had them for around 20 years. Brilliant cars. I've now got the bright orange fiesta ST performance edition and I'll be keeping hold of it until i run it to the ground. It's sad. I don't understand why Ford would get rid of their best selling model!!!!

ID2 won't appear until 2023 I don't think. Maybe even 2024.

Corsa-e or e-208 are another option but they're a lot more £££££ than a petrol Fiesta.

Hybrid Toyota Yaris might be a decent halfway house, as an interim car until fully EV small cars start appearing on the market at sensible prices again?

Jyn · 26/10/2022 14:16

We have a beautiful 1988 Fiesta XR2. Both DH and I have had various classics over the years but the fiesta, without doubt, is the one that makes everyone smile.
Wherever we go people peep, pull alongside and give us a thumbs up, take photos etc. The reaction to it is phenomenal. It's the car everyone knew from their childhood.
It's a sad day.

OhmygodDont · 26/10/2022 14:19

On a Ford Facebook page. Apparently the Galaxy and S max are also going.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/10/2022 15:36

S max too? That's a blow. You don't get much better for bigger families than an S Max.

We had a corsa many years ago but it was awful. I think the engine was shot through due to ball bearings. It wasn’t even that old!

I cant see its worth getting the odd not really a hybrid fiesta right now. I’ll keep my ten year old for as long as I can. I’ve even heard of a scheme where old cars can be converted to electric! No idea how viable that is.
