Genuine question or maybe they want to stay completely out of the limelight? Feel a tad sorry for him, he looks so excited:(

Half term and Diwali? More fun things planned while dad gets on with being PM?

Skiphopbump · 25/10/2022 12:09

Maybe they had prior engagements that couldn’t be cancelled at the last minute.

Scoundrella · 25/10/2022 12:10

The BBC were reporting that he wasn’t planing to have a “celebration” entrance with supporter etc because it’s a serious time for the UK and he wouldn’t want to be seen as taking this lightly.

I think he his children are still young so I imagine he wants to shield them from too much exposure and his wife is a bit of a sore point after her tax unpopularity so I imagine she’s going to stay out the limelight as well

True, it is half term & this all happened so quickly, they may have plans & enjoying their last bit of relative normality...

Maybe they don't want to invest in case the Tories dump him in six weeks?

Don't feel sorry for him, he's happy as he is now filthy rich AND in power.

p.s. please can we have a general election?

Unseelie · 25/10/2022 12:11

He said in advance that he wants to send a message that this is a serious situation and he is ‘at work’ and won’t have friends and family celebrating with him. I think he genuinely wants to get on with running the country asap, makes a nice change from
a PM who drinks booze at work, eh.

Rishi did a good speech but I’m not sure he was wise to remind us that in 2019 the country elected the Conservatives on the basis of their manifesto promise to deliver “A stronger NHS, better schools, protecting our borders…” I mean people are waiting 27 hrs for an ambulance and dying while they wait, schools can’t afford heating and staff, and since Brexit we have no way to send back to France the illegal immigrants who sail across the channel in their hundreds every day.

Good luck, Rishi! I really really hope you’re one of the cleverest PMs Britain has ever had. Because if not, we’re so screwed.

JudgeRindersMinder · 25/10/2022 12:12

Because as other have said, he’s at work and there’s been enough of a pantomime over the last few weeks. Someone needs to knuckle down and run the bloody country

Dinaprettyballerina · 25/10/2022 12:13

Better schools in the papers the Rishi's are spending 63,000 on their daughter's schooling this year alone between Glendower & Wycombe Abbey...

They did live on Downing St before as well when he was chancellor so I daresay it’s not that exciting any more.

also - no GE - I think he’s right not to make a big song and dance and just crack on with it. If he stays in til Christmas until the next GE and wins (unlikely frankly!) then maybe a nice pic of the family outside would be suitable. But I think his current optics are better.

Fushiadreams · 25/10/2022 12:14

His family were there last night. This is the second thread on this. Dudes in there doing his job, not having a party.

Emotionalsupportviper · 25/10/2022 12:15

Cleverness isn't enough @Unseelie - we need someone with compassion and foresight, to - and with the humility to be guided by people who know what they're talking about, and to appoint people to post who will be able to do the job - not just give job-rewards to mates.

Emotionalsupportviper · 25/10/2022 12:16

*too, not "to"

SaintVitasShagulaitas · 25/10/2022 12:25

Why would he need support? Isn't he a grown man?

Yes I think that’s the point. He’s very different from Boris thank God.

Saucery · 25/10/2022 12:28

Because they don’t want to be part of the media circus?
Because his wife is her own woman and doesn’t need to hang off the arm of her husband’s job?
Because this isn’t the US and we don’t have a ‘First Lady’?

Really? 2 kids had more important things on than being there with their Dad as he becomes PM?

@Scoundrella his girls aren't that young! & he wasn't beyond parading them about getting 'perfect family shots' during the (summer) hustings.

GetOffTheRoof · 25/10/2022 12:39

It looks far more professional this way IMO.

No way he can justify waltzing in like Truss did with a party in the street - there's too much backlash about how this vote isn't what the grassroots Conservative members wanted, the political atmosphere right now is under massive pressure and scrutiny and people who aren't Conservatives want to know if he's got any competence at all to reassure the world and the financial markets to avoid bankrupting the country.

So a quiet entrance, alone, without family (who are after all irrelevant to the role) is far and away the best optic they could go for.

Of course they are. The couple are richer than the King, not a chance they are going to the local comp.

And if I had money, my imaginary kids would also be going private. Who wouldn't if they had money to burn?

People get funny about this, but look at all the political parties MPs and where their children are sent. Many go private because they can.

Ekátn · 25/10/2022 12:43

I saw it and actually liked it.

It’s his job. The country is in the shit. Presenting himself as though he is going to work, is the right thing. He also won’t want his wife being a focus. The whole ‘he is too rich to care/think/understand about the struggles of everyone else is only highlighted with his extremely rich wife stood next to him. And I am sure she is busy too. I am guessing we won’t see much of her tbh.

I actually think it’s always been weird how the families are treated as though they are doing the job too. It should be treated like any other job.

I always think the photos of the wives as summits are cringy. Which wife met which wife and who wore what. It’s really outdated.

Tinytortilla · 25/10/2022 12:46

I think he wanted to show this wasn’t a “personal victory for his family” and instead he was here to do a job

LaurieFairyCake · 25/10/2022 12:47

Well they're billionaires so they're probably out buying diamonds in Saudi or fucking yachts

I'm just jealous, would love my dd's to have the opportunity to go somewhere like Glendower & Wycombe Abbey! However I think those who are setting the standards & benchmarks for education should lead by example & put their kids in a dtate school & bring all dchools up to the standard of Wycombe Abbey..
Yes they are wildly rich! I think they come across as lovely parents. They're a beautiful family, his wife is extremely well educated too.

Dinaprettyballerina. No need to comment on where he sends his children to school. It doesn't matter to his job or YOU
