Why is Sunak entering no 10 without his family supporting him?

Genuine question or maybe they want to stay completely out of the limelight? Feel a tad sorry for him, he looks so excited:(

Dina's remarks are out of order. They are children and their peers will be passing on comments from the likes of you and upsetting them.

Please leave the children alone

I imagine his wife is busy with her own job. I’m not a Tory supporter, but he’s the best hope out of the tories. He’s been handed a tough job. Genuinely wish him all the best in sorting the country out

upinaballoon · 25/10/2022 13:00

Because he's man enough to stand on his own. He didn't strike me as looking sad or being in a sad situation. He looked suitably serious.

Lmgify · 25/10/2022 13:00

I agree with most of you, he’s going to work, he doesn’t need his wife there. Also, with all the circus about his wife being a billionaire, I’m sure they don’t want her distracting from him. On a side note, I’ve been reading up about both of them, their families both come from humble beginnings (Rishi used to be a waiter?) and her family got rich through hard work and luck. As a first generation immigrant theirs is an immigrant story I can aspire to.

gogohmm · 25/10/2022 13:00

Maybe they are away, it's half term

Floomobal · 25/10/2022 13:01

I’m not a Tory voter, but I appreciate that today felt like a sensible man going in to work, to start a difficult job.

Not a photo op and celebration for him personally, and showing off his family etc.

Lets hope he manages to go some way to sorting out the shit show we’re currently in.

Spectre8 · 25/10/2022 13:02

He is a politician after all so will be thinking about the optics of everything he does or does not do.

Blocked · 25/10/2022 13:12

He's good at assessing the public mood. He knows the public don't want to see any more celebrations at Downing Street.

notanothertakeaway · 25/10/2022 13:24

He wants to distance himself from Boris / partygate

His wife's tax status remains controversial

He wants to be seen as more concerned about the serious job of governing, rather than posing for a celebratory picture

It's all about optics / the image he wants to present

Tbf that’s a step up from the last 2 😂

KatherineJaneway · 25/10/2022 14:15

He knows he needs to be seen as serious, concerned and down to business. Family tagging along would look formal and celebratory. I am sure they'll have a few sherries this evening.

PAFMO · 25/10/2022 14:17

Because he doesn't want us to remember he's married to a tax dodging billionaire?

I'm sure most immigrants from humble backgrounds haven't been quite as economical with the truth about their tax status though.
Unless you want to aspire to that, obvs.

MarshaBradyo · 25/10/2022 14:19

It doesn’t bother me. It’s kind of odd the whole family image is key.

Maybe keeping children and partners out of it will reduce online and offline abuse.

Didn't take long for the racist comments to start

He said in advance that he wants to send a message that this is a serious situation and he is ‘at work’ and won’t have friends and family celebrating with him. I think he genuinely wants to get on with running the country asap, makes a nice change from
a PM who drinks booze at work, eh.

Rishi did a good speech but I’m not sure he was wise to remind us that in 2019 the country elected the Conservatives on the basis of their manifesto promise to deliver “A stronger NHS, better schools, protecting our borders…” I mean people are waiting 27 hrs for an ambulance and dying while they wait, schools can’t afford heating and staff, and since Brexit we have no way to send back to France the illegal immigrants who sail across the channel in their hundreds every day.

Good luck, Rishi! I really really hope you’re one of the cleverest PMs Britain has ever had. Because if not, we’re so screwed.

Whenn they wrote their manifesto, they didn't know there was going to be a global pandemic and that Russia would invade Ukraine. Nobody did. Both of those things have had a fairly large impact on the economy, and pretty much everything else.

I suspect that, unlike his immediate predecessor, he will not seek to drive home this now totally unachievable manifesto.

lunar1 · 25/10/2022 14:29

As somebody else said, we aren't America, we don't elect families in the same way they do.

I think it also draws a line under the amount of control Boris seemed to let his wife have over his decisions. Rishi is going for a very professional image.

londonmummy1966 · 25/10/2022 14:33

Probably beacuse he doesn't want us to remember he's the tax avoider's husband when he starts cutting costs to the bone

WahineToa · 25/10/2022 14:34

Because he doesn't want us to remember he's married to a tax dodging billionaire?

Thats false. She paid tax on her income generated in India, in India. This country’s jealousy now means India doesn’t get the tax money from an Indian business that it deserves. Shame on everyone who thinks this is ok.

WahineToa · 25/10/2022 14:34

@ExpulsoCorona yup, I reported that post and will do to any further racist crap. I’m sick of it.

Good one. No wonder PMs keep their dc low profile these days. Who’d want all this abuse aimed at them.

Amarette · 25/10/2022 14:37

So much bitterness against him because he is wealthy. I wish we could value people on their character and not how much money they do or don't have.

stemthetide · 25/10/2022 14:42

I've always hated the involvement of Prime Ministers' wives/husbands. Everyone else starts their first day at work without the family by their side. The spouses aren't elected MPs so they should keep out the way.

He's right, it looks more businesslike to get on with it.

How is that racist??

I’ve got non dom (distant) relatives with white skin- where you live for tax purposes has nothing to do with race or ethnicity. It has everything to do with being an absolute dickhead.

I think he’s an absolutely appalling choice of PM, but not because he is not white.
