And will this finally rid of us Jacob Rees Mogg and his ilk?

I think Mordaunt needs to be in one of the great offices of state. Probably Foreign Office. Or maybe lined up for chancellor next time there's a reshuffle and Sunak can get rid of Hunt.

She has a big chunk of support within the parliamentary party (as evidenced by her performance in the last leadership contest) and she has a lot of grassroots member support too. She will likely be the 'stop Boris' candidate next time there's a leadership contest.

That recent video — the Portsmouth one — was a smart piece of positioning. And I'm saying that as someone who is not a natural Conservative voter.

BUT SHE WAS SHIT AT DEFENCE!

What a state we are in when Raab is seriously being listed as a big name or heavy hitter.

Give him a position and then make his first public photo shoot in Dover...

I didn’t mean that in that he was capable, more he was well known. But yeah I get the point.

Yes but being shit at things isn't the automatic disqualification it used to be.

Fushiadreams · 25/10/2022 12:53

Apparently Rees mogg has just resigned as business secretary

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 12:54

FWIW, the office of Home Security always goes to someone who hates human rights. Its a requistent to the office. Or it has been for over a decade...with that in mind Braverman was perfect for the role.

I think she will be back there tbh.

WildRosie · 25/10/2022 12:54

Aye, Rees Mogg is out. Jumped before pushed, I wonder?

I dunno, Johnson, Kwarteng and Truss have made a big case lately.

noblegiraffe · 25/10/2022 13:00

We cannot have Suella "my big dream is to send immigrants to Rwanda" Braverman back at home.

Besides, she just had to resign for security breaches so surely cannot be trusted a week later.

I know, a faint hope.

Struck by how artful Sunak's commentary on his predecessors is - poking not just their records but their arguments.

To Truss: Yes, we know you really tried and had good intentions, but tbh that doesn't count for much.

To Johnson: "I know you would agree" that when you claimed GE2019 gave you a presidential mandate to continue in office, that was unconstitutional nonsense in a parliamentary system.

No one is talking about education, yet the education sector is in crisis and facing both a teacher and headteacher strike in the new year. Funding has collapsed, reports are 90% of schools will go bankrupt.

Kit Malthouse has been largely silent in the role, as was Cleverly. There needs to be a serious person in the role, with an actual plan for dealing with the funding crisis, the recruitment and retention crisis and so on.

I bet it'll be announced way down the list just past Minister for Lectern Selection.

I took the comments about tight borders and commitment to manifesto important in the context of Braverman having a 'stand up argument with Truss' over exactly this.

I also hope she does not return, but her backing Sunak was one of the key nails in Johnson's bid attempt. So deal likely to have been cut.

Education and Health are interesting ones to watch.

Since covid has fallen down the agenda and economics and the war have risen, these issues are dropping off radar.

I don't necessarily put this down to individuals tbh but media cycle and dominant subjects.

There are a lot of the public who are really concerned about both atm though, because there are enormous issues that aren't being dealt with in the covid hangover.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 13:08

Brandon Lewis Out. (Justice)

So Business and Justice are open for new appointments.

Croque · 25/10/2022 13:12

The borders issue probably deserves it's own thread (again!) . I don't think Sunak had much of a say in Suella's public declarations of support. The fact is that for all this posturing over controlling borders, there is little to nothing they can effectively do about little boats making their way across to an island. Those promises are necessarily castles in the air.

I also noted that the Daily Mail described Sunak's family as having lived in "a hut" in Tanzania which is definitely way off the mark and possibly an indication of how they intend to deal as the voice of aggrieved party members.

TokyoSushi · 25/10/2022 13:14

I assume those who know they are not going to get anything are jumping before they're pushed.

I think he might keep Hunt.

Interested to see who gets health & education. Agree that Raab and Javid will be back.

I think it would be a bad move to get rid of Wallace, no point in causing issues there when he's doing a good job.

ShakeYourFeathers · 25/10/2022 13:14

I think he Dominic Raab will be in the cabinet in somewhere. He's done the rounds in the last few days backing sunak and introduced sunak when he was running for pm during the summer.

TokyoSushi · 25/10/2022 13:15

I really, really hope Braverman doesn't return, especially not at the Home Office. I expect Shapps hasn't even unpacked there, I expect he'll be moved to something else today.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was back at Deputy PM.

gogohmm · 25/10/2022 13:23

I suspect Penny Mordant as deputy prime minister, hunt stay as chancellor, but beyond that it's a guess, Ben Wallace didn't back rishi for instance but is popular

Time to fix Boris’s bankrupt, broken, Brexit Britain.

Suella Braverman obviously going to come back as Home Sec, right? I mean, she's not a fool, she knows how valuable her endorsement was, she will have held out for a big job.

The interesting part of this reshuffle to watch, I think, will be whether Sunak is clearly planning for his next reshuffle with the junior posts: i.e. is he lining up a Justice Sec he can sub in for her when he's stronger, who is his chief sec, etc etc.

Hearing that Suella Braverman is making a return to cabinet less than a week after being sacked over a security breach.

One govt source even suggests she might be back as home sec, perhaps in return for endorsing Sunak. Bold move, if true.

Suella Braverman's allies said she would have settled for nothing less than her old job as home secretary in return for endorsing Rishi Sunak on Sunday

titchy · 25/10/2022 13:34

SB as Home. Fuck. I do hope not.
