The inevitable return of Mornington Crescent

1000 replies

As winter approaches and the nights draw in, one’s thoughts naturally turn to wholesome, homely entertainment. Instead, though, I invite experienced players and novices alike to join me in a game of Mornington Crescent.

To keep the pace gentle, I’ll begin with an inverse Lepton to

Seven Sisters

Gosh! I haven’t seen that move since the Colonel attempted it at the Bilbao conference in 2012. I still have flashbacks to how that ended.

Walthamstow

I'm going to have to call it a night for now (I plead Extenuating Circumstances under the Thorvald Convention on Player Elimination). It's an honour to meet such strong players.

Before I go, I'll try to untwist that triple-exchange with: Elephant and Castle.

Hexenjagd · 22/10/2022 21:11

Nice one@PhotoDad it has been a pleasure

i invoke the Old Circle Line Möbius Step

Kings Cross

Flumpaphone · 22/10/2022 21:12

I'll take Photodad's seat, I believe I can under the 1934 Bedford Symposium revision to the Eastern Standard Rules

Tottenham Court Road

ApplePippa · 22/10/2022 21:19

Ooooh can I join in? I'm a complete novice - last time I played it got very messy and I ended up in Nidd pretty much straight away.

So very nervously (and safely), I'm going for

Swiss Cottage

<wibble>

marcopront · 22/10/2022 21:28

Controversial one

Canary Wharf

TragicMuse · 22/10/2022 21:28

Nice play ApplePippa!

Ummmmmmm. Oh now then, it's tricky...

But I think this works - Vauxhall

squarepegleg · 22/10/2022 21:35

I know there's a few options here and this might be high risk but:

earls court

Violettaa · 22/10/2022 21:37

Has the Codex been updated to allow Battersea Power Station Station?

ApplePippa · 22/10/2022 21:44

I believe it has Violettaa, but purists of the game might not allow it.

If so, I think the next move has to be:

Richmond

TragicMuse · 22/10/2022 21:47

Taplow

Juicyshoes · 22/10/2022 21:47

Hmm, I’m sure the Dowager Countess’s blushes will be spared…

What with all the piano moves going on and both controversy and queries about Codexes, I’m going to do a hangman’s drop into Bond Street as the Triple lock has expired (crosses fingers I’m not in Nidd!)

Juicyshoes · 22/10/2022 21:48

Oh my God Muse!! Have you LOST YOUR MIND!!!

TragicMuse · 22/10/2022 21:49

I play fast and loose at this time of night, Juicy!!

JudjyPants · 22/10/2022 21:50

Oh I've so missed this game!

So forgive me if I'm a bit rusty and this is a hideously obvious move.

All I can think of as a logical play is:

Southwark

Celebrityskint · 22/10/2022 21:50

Moving several spaces along to Albion. Starting with debtford, then catford

TragicMuse · 22/10/2022 21:51

3 steps in one is BOLD PLAY! I like that! Shows pluck.

IrenetheQuaint · 22/10/2022 21:58

Oh God, I swore I'd never play again after rashly joining an illegal 72-hour session down Aldwych tube station during the third lockdown. Never mind Covid, by the time I made it shakily back into the fresh air both my eyebrows had turned white, and an unexplained injury to the little finger on my left hand has had a disastrous effect on my bassoon playing.

But the nights are drawing in and the old longing has come over me.

Mudchute

Pumpkintopf · 22/10/2022 22:01

Hmm a plucky move indeed but I fear it has left us in contravention of the Von Schleswig contract as cited in the 2011 championships.

I believe it can however be resolved with a double shove to
*
North Ealing*

Pumpkintopf · 22/10/2022 22:04

Ah my apologies Irene I fear I double-shoved over your move there.

I withdraw my suggestion and tip my hat to your superior strategy

And humbly submit Cannon Street

Hexenjagd · 22/10/2022 22:10

Squints at @IrenetheQuaint

dO I know you….? Fond memories, if so. The Downing street lockdown parties are stuff of legend, but tha game was …. Something else….

im a purist at heart, so …

Willeseden Junction

RhubarbFairy · 22/10/2022 22:11

I'm a novice so I do hope you'll be kind.

Tooting Broadway

ApolloandDaphne · 22/10/2022 22:16

Sideways shunt and a neat reverse to Wapping.

AnnieHoooo · 22/10/2022 22:29

Twisted shuttles at Dalston Junction so....Old Street

lightlypoached · 22/10/2022 22:29

That's numberwang
