How not to burn on sunbed?

Hi I haven't used a sunbed in 20 years.
I have pale skint but do tan after going red.
I normally use dove summer glow but I'm going on holiday and that goes patchy (especially mixed with sun tan lotion)
I joined my local tanning salon and today is the 3rd time I've been on.
I went on twice for 6 mins and today 9 mins and I'm bright red.
My stomach is red and itchy
My back is also
The lady said it always happens after the 3rd session.
I've been using the Australian gold tan lotion.
I have 3 weeks before I go away.
I don't want to be brown brown just a nice colour so I don't burn and peel on holiday

Was 9 mins too much?
The least my salon offers is 6 minutes
Any advice would be great
After holiday I won't be going back on again i will go back to my dove summer glow

My friend age 48 died in January after a 9 year battle with melanoma. It eventually spread to her brain. Imagine that, a slow death, undergoing many many different drugs. Facing years of chemo, radiotherapy, operations, organ failure, then it spread to her brain and she eventually died. She left a distraught husband and a teenage son. She always posted about covering up in the sun on social media hoping that people would avoid the heartache She, her family and friends went through for those 9 years. Embrace the pale. Its beautiful and better than being dead.

Thanks everyone -think I will just stick to the tan.
I'm not normally stupid -just get down on myself when I see other women looking lovely and tanned and I'm sat there like caspers older sister.
My mam passed away with breast cancer which spread and it was horrific -I seen the hell she went through and I'm terrified of the same thing happening.
She was only 43 and I'm now 36 so I do worry
So obviously I'm a bit worried
I honestly didn't think a few sunbed sessions were so dangerous -I assumed it was those who went on for years and were burnt to the max.
It's not worth it is it for 7 days away

Good for you OP. This is not a decision you will regret in 10 years time.

Have a wonderful holiday.

Good choice OP. Some fake tans are really good. Have a great holiday.

And don’t get sun tanned on the beach either as that gives you skin cancer too. I know it’s crap and it sucks but it is what it is.

Beauty is more than skin deep.

What's that old Victorian saying now?
Pale and interesting.
Sunbeds are only good for one thing and that's putting in the bin.
I remember back in the eighties when they took off in popularity, you could hire them and lay on your own bed under them, while chasing the dream of looking like a walnut.
I wonder how many of those who used them have either died of cancer or looked like Madge off Benidorm by the time they were fifty.

I’m so pleased OP.

whenever I saw a paled skinned women by the pool in a wide brim hat or walking about with a floaty kimono I never thought "pasty" or "just arrived" I thought elegant, intelligent woman!

Yes to this! I’m in Turkey at the moment and there are quite a few of us sitting in the shade in floaty cover-ups and hats.

There are still quite a few mahogany folk lying on loungers for hours in direct sun and I’m afraid my view of them is that they’re either a bit dim or just really don’t care about their health (or indeed their appearance as they age).

chasing the dream of looking like a walnut.

This made me actually guffaw 😂

Seriously though, good for you OP. I’m glad you’ve taken posters’ comments on board. You’ve made a wise decision.

Good for you. It'd be great if you could get past "lovely and tanned" too, I don't think that's a thing, myself, I don't think people ever look lovely and tanned, they just have different skin tones. You've been conditioned to think that, but it's not actually lovely. It's just different. But there's always fake tan anyway if you really feel that you don't like your natural colour.
