How not to burn on sunbed?

pinkslaws · 21/10/2022 20:21

Hi I haven't used a sunbed in 20 years.
I have pale skint but do tan after going red.
I normally use dove summer glow but I'm going on holiday and that goes patchy (especially mixed with sun tan lotion)
I joined my local tanning salon and today is the 3rd time I've been on.
I went on twice for 6 mins and today 9 mins and I'm bright red.
My stomach is red and itchy
My back is also
The lady said it always happens after the 3rd session.
I've been using the Australian gold tan lotion.
I have 3 weeks before I go away.
I don't want to be brown brown just a nice colour so I don't burn and peel on holiday

Was 9 mins too much?
The least my salon offers is 6 minutes
Any advice would be great
After holiday I won't be going back on again i will go back to my dove summer glow

Sounds like we have the same type of skin @pinkslaws. I too hate being pale and used to use sun beds loads. I don’t now, CBA getting dressed/undressed multiple times. I’ve never got on with fake tan; never found one that doesn’t smell of biscuits and it’s always, always way too dark.

When I used to use sun beds I would first get off after 2 minutes, then 3, 4 etc. I try not to let being so pale bother me now, but I hate if I go on a sun holiday. I’m so pale, I reflect!

Dangermouse80 · 22/10/2022 06:26

Nine minutes is way too long. Apart from the obvious risks, in the past I never used more than 4 minutes and I never burnt. This meant I had a light base tan before going on holiday and using sunscreen and still tanning.

I post this as despite everyone saying don't tan, the fact remains most foreign holidays involve some level of sunbathing.

WonderingWanda · 22/10/2022 06:50

This is so unhealthy and bad for your skin op please stop and go and get a professional spray tan and some factor 50!

9 minutes!! My tanning salon started on 3 mins - 9 minutes is madness

Bonjovispjs · 22/10/2022 08:48

You would be extremely foolish to ever go on a sunbed again.

Bobbins36 · 21/10/2022 20:24

People still use sunbeds? Nuts. Don’t do that.

I always see the shops around and think 'who on earth is using them?', how are they still in business.... well, here you go I guess!

MrsMorrisey · 22/10/2022 09:54

A lovely woman called Clare Oliver campaigned to get sunbeds banned in Australia.
She got melanoma from tanning and was successful in her campaign. Unfortunately she passed away.
Utterly ridiculous to be using them for a tan.
No one cares about a tanned look anymore.
Skin is our biggest organ of our body, needs to be cared for.

Whistlesandbell · 22/10/2022 10:05

Please don’t go. I’ve had 9 melanomas, 5 wider excisions, lymphs out, skin grafts, skin flaps, skin lasered off, cut off, chemotherapy creamed off, nitrogen liquid (like a mini fire extinguisher) and frozen off. Then months of not being able to walk and having to keep my feet up or not being able to swim, sleep in my side or back depending on what procedure I’ve had.
Honestly being pale is better than being covered in scars. At one point I had 7 lots of stitches at once and three operations in 12 days.

Leavesofautumn · 22/10/2022 10:22

I'm amazed they're still legal tbh. In 50 years time, people will learn about them and be shocked in the same way that we're shocked now about horrendous things from Victorian times.

pinkslaws · 22/10/2022 10:24

This was a one off
I'm talking 6-8 sessions before a holiday not repeated use.
I didn't know the severity of using them for such a short space of time
On holiday I will be around the pool so can't cover up and want to actually enjoy the sunshine.

You're going to do what you want.
6 -8 times is repeated use!!

Most people wear a hat and sunscreen.
What do you mean you can't cover up?

Shockmeafter · 22/10/2022 10:41

I manage to sit around a pool whilst being pale. I wear factor 50 and use a sun shade umbrella like most people.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 22/10/2022 10:53

Any kind of tan is sun damage.

They do brilliant spray tans now, really realistic looking

Haver74 · 22/10/2022 10:57

What is so wrong with being pale? I remember sitting on a beach in Greece in my early twenties and there was a "old" woman who looked like a piece of well-worn mahogany leather. Thinking back she was probably only about 50 but looked years older. I decided then and there that having a tan was overrated and have embraced my pale, smooth skin!
So, how not to burn on a sunbed? Don't go on a sunbed! And wear factor 50 in the actual sun. Your older self will thank you.

pinkslaws · 22/10/2022 11:01

Obviously il be wearing a hat and sunscreen
I meant long sleeve etc so my arms /legs will be exposed

Are people really this stupid?

MingoDringo · 22/10/2022 11:27

They should be illegal

Mollymoofer · 22/10/2022 11:40

Agree should be illegal. Honestly OP, you’ve fallen prey to a lifetime of being told you’re not enough as you are and now you’re spending money and risking your health trying to be something you’re not. Not to mention running the risk of adding to NHS strain down the line.

fake tan and factor 50 all the way. Enjoy your holiday and, in the kindest way possible, get a grip.

Tootlingalong · 22/10/2022 11:47

I am naturally pale, used sunbeds in my twenties and got my first confirmed skin cancer in my early 40s. I've got a lovely 2inch scar on my face now and have to have yearly check ups. I also have two younger friends who also used sunbeds and both have had melanoma skin cancer. It really isn't worth it OP. Embrace your skin, it's a sign of beauty in the Far East x

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/10/2022 11:47

🤦🏻‍♀️

How have we got to 2022 and people are still using these things?

outtheshowernow · 22/10/2022 12:35

Skin cancer

SecretShipping · 22/10/2022 12:49

Jeez. Accept that you have pale skin.

The OP is EXACTLY why these things should be banned. Literally refusing to use one ounce of common sense and listen to advice.

Do people still just lie cooking themselves in the sun? It's not the 1970's anymore. Is that 'enjoying the sun'? We all should know better now.

OP, for God's sake, read the thread comments and stop risking your health to try to change your skin colour. Madness.

You have beautiful creamy skin! I'd swap you my sun damaged skin with melasma any day.
