How not to burn on sunbed?

pinkslaws · 21/10/2022 20:21

Hi I haven't used a sunbed in 20 years.
I have pale skint but do tan after going red.
I normally use dove summer glow but I'm going on holiday and that goes patchy (especially mixed with sun tan lotion)
I joined my local tanning salon and today is the 3rd time I've been on.
I went on twice for 6 mins and today 9 mins and I'm bright red.
My stomach is red and itchy
My back is also
The lady said it always happens after the 3rd session.
I've been using the Australian gold tan lotion.
I have 3 weeks before I go away.
I don't want to be brown brown just a nice colour so I don't burn and peel on holiday

Was 9 mins too much?
The least my salon offers is 6 minutes
Any advice would be great
After holiday I won't be going back on again i will go back to my dove summer glow

OP, you have beautiful pale skin. The whole idea that pale means pasty and undesirable is one cooked up by the beauty industry to get you to part with your money. Look after your skin.

MaraScottie · 22/10/2022 12:59

OP Did you not read the cancer statistics?????

Once is enough to have already increased your risk of cancer.

CANCER!!

AintNoThang · 22/10/2022 13:00

OP you are very daft.

Some people just don’t tan. Myself included! If you have the skin type that doesn’t tan you’re more likely to get skin cancer like I did. It’s seriously not worth it. I know it’s frustrating when you’re on holiday and feel like you’re the only pale one but your life is way more important.

Beanso · 22/10/2022 13:13

This post has got me thinking - is there some sort of petition going to ban sunbeds? I think a lot of people here would want to sign

Tigrillo · 22/10/2022 13:13

I'm really pale and freckly. Never used sun beds but did live in hot countries when I was younger so the cancer thing worries me.

These days I am happy with my pale skin. I just use a tiny bit of fake tan on my legs before a holiday to stop them looking so luminous. I also think the colour of your clothes makes a difference, lighter colours make your skin look relatively less pale.

Soubriquet · 22/10/2022 13:16

I love my pale skin and deliberately stay out of the sun to stay pale.

The only time I’ve ever had a proper tan was when my mum made me have a fake tan done for prom. She was and still is one of those who “needs” a tan to be healthy. She always used a sun bed before we went on holiday.

countrypunk · 22/10/2022 13:17

This is total insanity. As other posters have said, sunbeds should be banned. I know someone who has terminal melanoma. She's in her early 40s. Please, please stop using sunbeds.

BeanieTeen · 22/10/2022 13:18

Fake tan all the way. Sun beds aren’t for you.

Soubriquet · 22/10/2022 13:18

Btw, one very good reason not to use sun beds apart from skin cancer… final destination 3.

That scared off many people.

ShirleyHolmes · 22/10/2022 13:29

Please don't.

My friend is currently being treated for melanoma; another has already died.

I used to try to tan in the 80s, as a teenager.

I know better now; and there is nothing wrong with being pale.

I love being in the sun and heat and I feel the cold so prefer sun to shade. I wear factor 50, regularly topped up, long , loose kaftans anytime I'm not swimming, a hat etc.

Please prioritise your health over your appearance OP. I am sure you look lovely.

sqirrelfriends · 22/10/2022 13:31

Embrace the pale.

You will thank yourself when you’re older. You can tell the older women who have tanned all their lives as their skin elasticity takes a massive hit those who have stayed in the shade.

The attached picture shows a truck driver who had more sun exposure on his right side than the left. You can clearly see how much sun damage he has.

Melanoma Uk and Zoe’s law has been asking mod’s to ban sunbeds and get it teadin Parliament

Mollymalone123 · 22/10/2022 13:40

More than 16,000 sign 'Zoe's Law' mole-testing petition

not sure if it’s been copied properly Zoe was very young when she died of melanoma.

pinkslaws · 22/10/2022 11:02

This is how pale I am after 3 times on a sunbed

Then fake tan is your friend, please don’t sunbed if you are that pale. I speak as a ginger, milk bottle lookalike friend!

Dillwyninthebath · 22/10/2022 17:03

Op you have lovely skin, keep it that way! You ain’t a sausage to be sizzled!!!

Buckland123 · 22/10/2022 17:51

Op I understand feeling better with a tan - I’m pale-ish and I look SO much better with a tan. All those saying ‘embrace the pale’ - fine for you, but not for me as I look so much nicer with a tan!
HOWEVER I only use spray tans / fake tans now - they have improved 1000 times over in the last few years. Honestly! If you use moisturiser a lot you can get a week out of a spray tan - take some gradual tan with you to top it up on about day 4/5. You have to apply it carefully but it’s pretty good stuff. Bondi Sands like others have said is really good and doesn’t smell anymore. Even from 5 years ago they have improved loads.
try it - honestly! You’ll feel better instantly with a spray tan (& you don’t have to go mega dark, most of them do a nice light one now) & you can sleep easy at night knowing you’re not damaging your skin.
have a lovely holiday!

waterlego · 22/10/2022 20:26

I’m another one who can’t believe they’re still legal. They are so, so dangerous. Melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the UK.

My Dad died of melanoma and it was fucking brutal. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

When you go on holiday, I would suggest using Factor 30-50 and wearing a hat. You could even do what millions of us pasty Brits do and sit in the shade. It’s perfectly possible to enjoy the sun while sitting under a large parasol.

pinkslaws · 23/10/2022 09:06

Thanks everyone -think I will just stick to the tan.
I'm not normally stupid -just get down on myself when I see other women looking lovely and tanned and I'm sat there like caspers older sister.
My mam passed away with breast cancer which spread and it was horrific -I seen the hell she went through and I'm terrified of the same thing happening.
She was only 43 and I'm now 36 so I do worry
So obviously I'm a bit worried
I honestly didn't think a few sunbed sessions were so dangerous -I assumed it was those who went on for years and were burnt to the max.
It's not worth it is it for 7 days away

SophieJo · 23/10/2022 09:43

Please give them up and use fake tan. They are a contributing factor to skin cancer.

Dillwyninthebath · 23/10/2022 10:11

@pinkslaws Morning, I don’t mean to be insensitive but aren’t you worried given your mum’s history?

Look I’m pasty, I’m nearly see through🤣 but I just don’t think it’s worth it, I used to think I looked better with a tan but I think it’s really aging and I look younger with pale skin.

Some of the fake tans are nice now as others said, really nice facial tanners and sometimes I just use a shade darker foundation on my legs and neck and arms to even my skin out for a night out or holiday.

Cancer is so unpredictable, you don’t need to have frazzled for years, don’t play roulette.

Dillwyninthebath · 23/10/2022 10:14

sorry I think I read your post wrong! Did you mean you won’t go on them? I need a coffee sorry Grin

PinkOwlReading · 23/10/2022 10:28

Hi OP, if it helps you to hear it, many peoples views of tanning has changed in recent years. I'm very pale skinned and allergic to the active ingredient in fake tan so I can't use those. I use high factor suncream on holiday and so I don't burn but manage to go very slightly golden brown but I accept I will never be tanned again (fake or real). I've just got back from 2 weeks in the sun and the point I wanted to make to you is whenever I saw a paled skinned women by the pool in a wide brim hat or walking about with a floaty kimono I never thought "pasty" or "just arrived" I thought elegant, intelligent woman! Please try to love the skin you're in and keep safe

pinkslaws · 23/10/2022 10:54

@Dillwyninthebath hi yeah I meant stick to the fake tan ha ha
