How not to burn on sunbed?

Hi I haven't used a sunbed in 20 years.
I have pale skint but do tan after going red.
I normally use dove summer glow but I'm going on holiday and that goes patchy (especially mixed with sun tan lotion)
I joined my local tanning salon and today is the 3rd time I've been on.
I went on twice for 6 mins and today 9 mins and I'm bright red.
My stomach is red and itchy
My back is also
The lady said it always happens after the 3rd session.
I've been using the Australian gold tan lotion.
I have 3 weeks before I go away.
I don't want to be brown brown just a nice colour so I don't burn and peel on holiday

Was 9 mins too much?
The least my salon offers is 6 minutes
Any advice would be great
After holiday I won't be going back on again i will go back to my dove summer glow

Those stupid things were outlawed in Australia, thankfully.

Like we don't get enough UV exposure as it is!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 21/10/2022 23:10

How not to burn? Unplug it at the wall?
I used them 25 years ago, when I didn’t know any better, I tan easily and have olive skin and if they’d have let me do 9 minutes then I’d have been wtf? Who are these people? Sheesh.

Fake tan /spray tans all go patchy on holiday
Mixed with sun tan lotion etc

Would rather that than end up seriously ill with melanoma.

‘I go red in the sun, always do’

That is literally your skin burning. Like you’d put it in an oven. I’m pale and I don’t ever go red because I’m not stupid and don’t want to die of skin cancer

Shockmeafter · 21/10/2022 23:18

I’m as pale as anything. It’s my skin colour and why would I be embarrassed about it

Dillwyninthebath · 21/10/2022 23:25

Hope you’re not going to use it op after reading this.

Gottagetthruthissss · 21/10/2022 23:30

I don't want to be brown brown just a nice colour 🙄

There's something really irritating about you..

Well said!

WildHorsesRunInMe · 21/10/2022 23:40

I'm very pale. I lived in the Mediterranean for a while in my younger years and absolutely hated sticking out like a sore thumb. I would burn my skin so badly trying to get that sun kissed look. I spend hours burning in the sun but in the end would just burn bright red. I wince now when I think of the damage I've caused to my skin all in the name of a tan. Never again! I now wear factor 50 and will never intentionally harm myself like that again.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 21/10/2022 23:48

Why do you care if you are not tanned? Two of my aunts suffered skin cancer, and my friend had it badly on her face and needed to undergo reconstructive surgery. Please, do not risk your health for vanity. Wear a good sunblock, sunglasses and wife brimmed hat. Don't bother with tanning beds is my advice. www.nhs.uk/live-well/seasonal-health/sunscreen-and-sun-safety/#:~:text=You%20can%20burn%20in%20the,enough%20vitamin%20D%20from%20sunlight.

*wide not wife.

CandyLeBonBon · 21/10/2022 23:50

Make sure you've got good critical illness insurance

MmHmm · 21/10/2022 23:56

I got a lovely bondi sands spray tan recently before going on holiday which I would really recommend. I was in the pool every day and applying sun cream and it didn't go patchy. Moisturise well and it'll fade well.

NoSki · 22/10/2022 00:04

Embrace Nicole Kidman, she looks beautiful in her pale skin.
Wrinkles and cancer are the only thing you’re going to get. Going red first then brown is skin damage. Red is skin damage, red is skin damage. Shall I say it again?

catfunk · 22/10/2022 00:06

I'm currently waiting to have some of my arse grafted onto the top of my arm after developing a melanoma and surgery to remove some lymph nodes under general anaesthetic )which is risky for me).

Trust me. It's not worth it. I thought it would never happen to me either.

Redrumridesagain · 22/10/2022 00:15

Are you fucking mental?!!

Even one sunbed session can increase your risk of developing squamous cell skin cancer by 67% and basal cell skin cancer by 29%*. Even more importantly is the increased risk of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. If you have ever used a sunbed your risk of melanoma increases by 20%. - cancer Research UK Statistics.

Pruneaux · 22/10/2022 00:25

Your red skin is burnt skin.

I am shocked they are still legal - it’s a fact that they cause skin cancer. Get a spray tan and use the tanning drops you mix into moisturiser. A tan is not worth dying over.

Notcontent · 22/10/2022 00:35

@pinkslaws did you know they are illegal in Australia? There are also calls by scientists and doctors to ban them in the U.K.

InTrussWeTruss · 22/10/2022 00:39

From everything I have read tanning is the first step of burning. There's no healthy way to tan. Just go as your lovely pale self. It's not worth it.

Bunnyfuller · 22/10/2022 00:49

Don’t use them. Ever.

BloobryMuffin · 22/10/2022 00:56

9 minutes was WAY too long.

I’m pale but do tan, used to go on sun beds pre holiday and would do 3 mins 2-3x a week for maybe a month to 6 weeks before to get a base tan. I could push to 6 mins after weeks of doing 3 but wouldn’t ever, ever do 9. I didn’t use any tan enhancer.

I don’t go on anymore, but the key is low and regular not to burn (not that I’m advocating it at all).

Noelfieldingsjumpers · 22/10/2022 01:38

My husband just had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his nose. He's naturally olive skinned. It was from outdoor working. Started as a blackhead, (we thought), then a half inch scab, then a large bleeding scab.

Please, please don't. I'm very pale, I once got sunburnt when I was young and the pain was enough to put me off for life.

If you're having sunbeds now don't bother with the spf on holiday really.

Mollymalone123 · 22/10/2022 01:56

Hey!
maybe you’d like to join me next time I go for treatment for malignant melanoma? Drugs that make you sick, that’s if you don’t die in the first couple of years-and don’t forget to be ready for all the chunks of skin they cut out and the surgery scars all over your body plus the endless ct scans and
mri’s every 3 months to check the cancer hadn’t spread to your brain, liver, stomach, breasts etc

or you could not use a sun bed

how can anyone not know about skin cancer and sun beds and it’s not a great idea anymore to have a tan?

Trying81 · 22/10/2022 05:57

Even Basal Cell Carcinoma is awful - I had one on my forehead

I had around 50 stitches - I had a big chunk of skin removed and they had to rotate some skin from further up my forehead to fill it in. I now have nerve damage which is incredibly painful - and about to have a biopsy for suspected melanoma

You never think it’ll happen to you - until it does

HairyMcLarie · 22/10/2022 06:11

Spray tans really don't go patchy on holiday.

I used to live in Sydney. It was impossible to sit out in the sun as it was excruciatingly hot and even the most olive skin would burn in a moment. Everyone wore factor 50.

Everyone had a tan though. Spray tan places were everywhere and that's what everyone did. I never saw a sunbed ever.

I used to have a spray tan once a fortnight. I was on the beach, surfing and in the sea swimming every day and it never went patchy.

Dont be silly.
