How not to burn on sunbed?

pinkslaws · 21/10/2022 20:21

Hi I haven't used a sunbed in 20 years.
I have pale skint but do tan after going red.
I normally use dove summer glow but I'm going on holiday and that goes patchy (especially mixed with sun tan lotion)
I joined my local tanning salon and today is the 3rd time I've been on.
I went on twice for 6 mins and today 9 mins and I'm bright red.
My stomach is red and itchy
My back is also
The lady said it always happens after the 3rd session.
I've been using the Australian gold tan lotion.
I have 3 weeks before I go away.
I don't want to be brown brown just a nice colour so I don't burn and peel on holiday

Was 9 mins too much?
The least my salon offers is 6 minutes
Any advice would be great
After holiday I won't be going back on again i will go back to my dove summer glow

I cannot believe people are so stupid to use a sunbed rather than either fake tan or just look a bit paler. Sunbeds should be banned. They increase the cancer risk massively. The effects of a sunbed are well known nowadays.

Lilylovetulips · 21/10/2022 21:41

Really don't know why you'd use a sunbed in this day and age when there are plenty of good fake tan products available. Skinny Tan and Fake Bake both do a good gradual tanning moisturiser.

Sunbed use increases the chance of skin cancer by 75% but I'm sure you already know that.

It worries me that I used them a lot in my 20s. I'm not pale and don't burn but I overused them and was very brown.
Not much I can do now except keep an eye on any skin changes. If I could have my time again I'd go nowhere near then.

Me too sadly. Already had two dodgy moles removed which came back benign but now have another one which I'm waiting to have taken off and tested 😥

I have the same skin type as you and to be honest the fact that i would go brown after initially burning was my downfall.

I used a sun bed about 3 times in my life for the same reasons you did and also had the same reaction that you did.

I had two skin cancers (1 basal cell and 1 melanoma) by the time I was 30 and I've been told it is very likely I will get more. My dermatologist said that it was caused by sun damage and use of sun beds would definitely have contributed. He explained to me that it is very unlikely I'd have sustained the same level of burns in normal sunlight after the same amount of time of exposure, so sun beds are far more intense than actual sunbathing.

Those cancer scares freaked me out to the core. Then a friend of mine died of melanoma aged 35 leaving two young kids and she used sun beds; it was a fucking brutal death.

I loved and still love having a tan. Over the years I have tried out so many different fake tans with various different outcomes. These days I use Bondi Sands gradual tan (foam) and I rather love the fact that using fake tan now gives me control and is so easy to apply and the smell isn't that horrible biscuity smell.

If I get the Prime Minister gig next week 😜one of the first things I'll do is to ban those machines; they are close relatives of cigarettes in terms of health risks IMO.

I'm 50 years old now and long in the tooth. I've got some experiences under my belt now; amazing and fucking awful. Without doubt those two cancer diagnoses will sit with me as up there as easily among the most terrifying moments of my life. I still see a dermatologist annually and get a full mole check.

Do yourself (and the people that love you) a favour and please never, ever go on a sun bed again. And find a fake tan that works for you - it's out there somewhere.

So scary
Fingers crossed for you that it's benign like your others Flowers

Crabbyboot · 21/10/2022 21:50

It's very irresponsible that they let you go on for that long. I am pale but tan well and I would only start with four minutes and build up from there one minute every session if I don't burn. Honestly if you are that pale I wouldn't go on at all you sound like you have a skin type which may be more prone to skin cancer.

AlwaysLatte · 21/10/2022 21:52

I would take that as a big warning not to use it at all!

IntentionalError · 21/10/2022 21:53

Sunbeds are dangerous. They should be banned. There is no safe way to use them, just as there is no safe way to smoke cigarettes or to be clinically obese.

If you don’t want to look pale, use fake tan. Otherwise, be like the Aussies, who take skin cancer seriously, and Slip, Slop, Slap. That’s slip on a shirt, slop on the sunscreen & slap on a hat.

LemonsAndCherries · 21/10/2022 21:54

Do you want skin cancer?

Do you want to look very old and wrinkly early?

If so, crack on.

BUT SKIN CANCER DOESN'T JUST HAPEN TO 'other' PEOPLE.

mondaytosunday · 21/10/2022 21:56

I used a tanning bed for about a year about 30 years ago. I'm pale with freckles. I never went red. I used to go in longer than nine minutes though, so the strength must have been a lot lower.

Thesearmsofmine · 21/10/2022 21:59

I’ve noticed that subbed places are popping up again where I live. They were everywhere 20 years ago then all dissapeared(thankfully) but now they’re reappearing.
OP I am very very pale, so I get where you are coming from but a tan isn’t worth the risks.

SecretShipping · 21/10/2022 22:03

pinkslaws · 21/10/2022 20:24

I go red in the sun etc always do.
Then I go brown

You are really damaging your skin. I cannot believe that people still go on sun beds.

If you really must change the colour of your skin, do it with lotions or whatever. Stay out of the sun and off bloody sun beds.

Learn to love your skin as it is and stop risking your health.

user1460571583 · 21/10/2022 22:03

Please stop the sunbeds, my mum was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2004, she had most of her thigh removed to get rid of it. It has come back 3 times since then. She has no lymphnodes left on the left side of her groin and now has to go on a machine every evening to remove excess fluid and rubbish from her system. She has had to have invasive surgery 6 times and has nearly died. She is fair skinned and freckly, she used sunbeds and lay sunbathing for hours on end when younger. If she could go back and change her younger years she would in a heartbeat, she hopes it doesn't come back again as she wants to see her grandchildren grow up.

Beanso · 21/10/2022 22:09

I’m waiting for more tests after a confirmed melanoma. The first thing they ask at most appointments is have you ever used sunbeds. It’s really not worth it! They should be banned!!!

Snowisfallinghere · 21/10/2022 22:10

They're banned in Australia because they're so damned dangerous. You wouldn't willingly expose yourself to asbestos or radioactive substances just for a tan, why should dangerous tanning beds be thought of as safe in any way?!

Like others have said, skin cancer isn't just something that happens to other people. One day you'll notice an inconspicuous little mole is suddenly looking a bit odd and you'll get that fluttery fear feeling in your chest. You'll call the doctor and you'll have to wait days or weeks to actually find out whether you've got cancer or not, and if so, how advanced is it? Will it be treated easily or did you notice it too late and only have months or weeks to live? It's terrifying. You'll be shitting yourself and wishing that you just went on holiday a couple of shades paler.

Honestly just Google "beautiful pale skinned women" or "pale skinned celebrities" if you want some reassurance that pale ≠ unattractive.

ElizabethBest · 21/10/2022 22:10

You know what looks really sexy on holiday? Melanoma. Fucks sake, how are people still this stupid.

threegoodthings · 21/10/2022 22:11

I can't believe people still go on sunbeds!

mistermagpie · 21/10/2022 22:16

Please don't go on them.

I went on sunbeds for years when I was younger. I did get burned on them and ended up with itchy skin etc. I'm 42 now, my skin is ruined and I live in fear of cancer. I spend a LOT of money on Botox and skincare to try and correct what I did to my pale and freckly skin in my youth. It's one of the only regrets I have in life and I promise it wasn't worth it.

I know it's tempting, and I still don't like fake tan but there's something addictive about sunbeds and they are so so damaging.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/10/2022 22:17

A lot of them still exist because they're used for money laundering. People still using them are rare!

ordinarilyordinary · 21/10/2022 22:18

Get a professional spray tan before you go on holiday, then use factor 50 in the sun.

fairtrauchled · 21/10/2022 22:26

Easy.Don't use them

AintNoThang · 21/10/2022 22:32

Enjoy your skin cancer for the sake of vanity 🏆

Northernsoullover · 21/10/2022 22:40

As someone who recently had a mole scare, I urge you not to go anywhere near them. I'm pale and proud. On holiday I wear SPF 50, stay under an umbrella and wear a rash vest if I go swimming. I've been sun safe since I was a teen but I have got burnt in my youth.

mnahmnah · 21/10/2022 22:45

I’m not sure I’ve ever read such an utterly clueless post.

You are pale. Embrace it. There is nothing wrong with being pale. Going red is never healthy. Skin cancer is very real. Simple.

Justgorgeous · 21/10/2022 22:58

Bloody hell. 9 minutes. The most I ever did years ago was 5 mins.
