Conservative membership deciding new pm

This is bonkers, the conservative membership cannot be trusted to decide who will be PM. They opted for Liz Truss last time, with her extreme conservative values. The country needs someone less extreme and with good morals

They won't be asked to decide if only one candidate is put forward.

hesbeingabitofadick · 21/10/2022 07:41

Don't worry too much.
Nothing you or I can say or do to change it.
If it goes to the membership, it'll be Boris...🤦‍♀️

MintJulia · 21/10/2022 07:42

Let's hope the extremists have learned their lesson (through their wallets and their pensions).

Right now, we need someone who can calm everything down, reassure the money markets and balance the books. A calm - if slightly boring - owner of some common sense, whose experience is already known, to get us to the next election. Because they won't call a general election voluntarily.

As far as I can see, that's Rishi Sunak. Penny Mordant is an unknown, bringing Boris back would be ridiculous, and the others are all polarising individuals.

I think it's the best we can hope for.

Yesterday it was stated it would need to be a candidate with the support of 100 mps. The only candidate in the last race who had that was Rishi Sunak - so he’s likely the only person who will be eligible. That’s If they can resist the massive pressure for a general election… I very very much doubt it will be Boris if they need the 100 votes which was announced yesterday.

MintJulia · 21/10/2022 07:46

Rishi Sunak is a northerner too. If I were a tory election planner with my eyes on those norther seats that switched to Conservative at the last election, that might be attractive too.

In what sense is he a Northerner? He was born in Southampton and went to Winchester.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 21/10/2022 07:51

They are fucked then as no tory has good morals.

Threadkillacilla · 21/10/2022 07:51

Boris already has 50 mps. I think it's time to worry.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/10/2022 07:54

Represents a Northern seat (Richmond, North Yorkshire, William Hague's old seat. A very safe Tory seat too, which is important. Not much point electing a leader whose own seat might fall to Labour next time, so would need to be parachuted into a safer seat.

He was born and grew up in Hampshire, and went back to work there during the summer when he was at University. Definitely not a northerner. And we're not daft enough to merely vote for one of our own in any event.

AlicesAttic · 21/10/2022 07:55

I'm betting on it being Johnson.
The man who enabled all this chaos, who attempted to shelter a sex offender, and who is still under investigation by the Privileges Committee. Conservatives have short memories.
It's immoral that they get a second choice within 2 months. Whoever wins, I'll be demonstrating for a GE.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/10/2022 07:58

I am clinging to the fact that at least one Tory MP has said he will resign the Tory whip if Johnson is re-elected. It's a horrific prospect. So many people seem to just laugh away all Johnson's innumerable poor decisions, character flaws, gaffes etc, many of which have had really serious consequences for other people, on the grounds that he has funny hair and seems like a good laugh. WTAF? When did we start electing a Prime Minister because he looks like someone you'd enjoy having a pint with?

BeyondMyWits · 21/10/2022 07:59

If something were to come out of the Priveleges committee, he'd have to resign... again... can he not see what a deeper shit show that would make.

Threadkillacilla · 21/10/2022 08:00

These mps are thinking of their own jobs and Boris is their messiah who can keep them in power.
their rock star prophet will get in.

PermanentTemporary · 21/10/2022 08:02

Rishi is definitely the least worst option; I hope he's tough enough. But actually if Johnson comes back I'll laugh my head off. He'll do a lot better in an election than Truss would have done and might even win, or at least get a hung parliament. That blustering, lazy, corrupt waste of space definitely represents part of us, maybe we deserve it. Twat that he is.

MintJulia · 21/10/2022 08:04

I just can't bear the idea of more Boris 😱

In what sense is he a Northerner? He was born in Southampton and went to Winchester.

He has a mansion in his constituency to which he has added luxury extensions , swimming pool etc

He doesn't live in it and rarely visits .

ChaosDemon · 21/10/2022 08:05

I like Ben Wallace, although he's an outsider.

<waits for someone to tell my naive self something horrible about him>

I don't think for a moment that the voters of Burnley would be remotely swayed by the fact that he's MP for Richmond to think that he's one of them.

You're right about the majority though. If the Tories did have a rush of blood to the head and elect Johnson they'd be highly likely to lose him at the next election. Sunak has a massive majority of nearly 50% so he could withstand a swing of twenty five percentage points to Labour and still stay in. Most of his competition have chunky majorities of 30% plus, but that might not be enough in the current environment.

AConservativeMember · 21/10/2022 08:07

I think Boris will get the 100, and the membership never wanted him out so he’ll easily get back in, even though it seems crazy. But every day is crazy atm.

He at least kills the argument about ‘no mandate from the public’.

The thing I don’t really get is people complaining that the membership chooses - that’s the system. I don’t know how the Labour Party works but assume they have a similar system, and other parties.

You have to have been a member for an amount of time to have a vote - I think I recall something in Labour re Corbyn that they got rid of that so people could sign up for a fiver and be eligible straight away?

Each party makes its own set of rules, once they get a majority in the HoC then their rules apply.

PermanentTemporary · 21/10/2022 08:08

@MintJulia I so agree with you - I'm allergic to the charlatan - but if they really want that cold mess patting their cheeks then bring it on.

JingsMahBucket · 21/10/2022 08:12

This shit show is why the SNP is pushing for Scottish independence. Having your life and economy screwed up by English people who keep voting Tory is madness.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/10/2022 08:32

I wonder if enthusiasm for independence might wane a bit if the UK had a Labour government again. Until very recently Labour could take it for granted that they would win lots of seats in Scotland, now they can't, because of the SNP. Makes it very difficult indeed for them to get a majority at a UK-wide general election. I'm a Scottish ex-pat. I would never vote SNP because from what I can see they're incompetent. It amazes me that they keep getting re-elected.

JingsMahBucket · 21/10/2022 08:42

Nah, Labour, especially in Scotland, has been aligning and doing deals with Tories. They’ve trashed their name here.

No.

I'm an snp voter & supporter of independence. I used to be a Labour member & voter.
Labour in scotland is very very different beast to uk Labour. Tories in red ties.

I am grateful every day for Sturgeon.

Support for Labour in scotland is still extremely low. They'll be lucky to get 2 seats at a general election.
