Conservative membership deciding new pm

ChampagneCamping · 21/10/2022 07:33

This is bonkers, the conservative membership cannot be trusted to decide who will be PM. They opted for Liz Truss last time, with her extreme conservative values. The country needs someone less extreme and with good morals

Yes Sunak's Richmond constituency is a typical left behind northern ghetto (251st in the government's own index of deprivation), so deprived it received levelling up funds whereas Barnsley (38th) didn't. Weird that.
Says everything really, doesn't it?
They must think we're all stupid.

Good Law Project ends judicial review challenge over Levelling Up Fund.

The Good Law Project was seeking to challenge the lawfulness of the allocation decisions and the methodology that the defendants stated they had used to determine those allocations.

However, the Good Law Project said had “somewhat reluctantly” withdrawn its application. This decision was “based on legal advice about our likelihood of success following disclosure by the Government of its documents”.

Morning Clav - has someone rubbed the magic lamp ?

“Optimism," said Cacambo, "What is that?" "Alas!" replied Candide, "It is the obstinacy of maintaining that everything is best when it is worst.”

I am optimistic that this is going to be a very exciting weekend. I don't really mind who wins - Johnson, Sunak or Mordaunt - I am enjoying the panic amongst the liberal lefties that it might be Boris!

WilmaFlintstone1 · 22/10/2022 10:04

I hate Boris, I really do. He will be bad news for the Conservatives, he’s shady, immoral and a loose cannon.

He is a dickhead of infinite proportions.

Sunak or Mordaunt are a better bet.

Meanwhile I will continue working with the vulnerable trying to
plug gaps because services which should support people are underfunded and understaffed. I’d back any potential leader who would begin to tackle that.

i asked on another thread
are they any members on mumsnet?

I’m a party member.

I have name changed for this though as I’ve seen the pile on and vitriol people can get on MN.

Clavinova · 22/10/2022 11:18

Breaking News - Boris Johnson has arrived back in the UK. Wink

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/10/2022 11:24

thank you @AConservativeMember
of course, hadnt thought about that
i guess you wouldnt want to share who you will chose, if it comes to that?

Skyellaskerry · 22/10/2022 12:00

@AConservativeMember thanks! I am genuinely interested whether as a member you feel you must have a say or, seeing how little time has passed since Truss was elected, you would accept only the conservative elected MPs’ decision?

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 22/10/2022 12:06

Vera!
You have elevated the thread!

@MarshaBradyo I think they are hoping that when it gets to the final 2, the one with the least votes will step aside, so no membership input. However if the 2 were BJ and Sunak, with Sunak having the majority, would BJ pull out - I doubt it as he will know he would win in that scenario.

To posters who have highlighted that parties decide what their leadership rules are, fair enough, but I think that all parties should be made to change their rules so that only elected MPs can decide mid term.

Lowering the tone, that phrase 'would BJ pull out' - pass the brain bleach!

Skyellaskerry · 22/10/2022 12:25

Oh god @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g!

bevelino · 22/10/2022 12:33

The demographic profile of the Tory membership is largely older non white voters. Sunak doesn’t stand a chance against Johnson if he gets the numbers. The members were warned about Truss but that didn’t stop them from voting for the most incompetent Prime Minister in British political history.

Happy to share if/when it comes to that.

I’m pretty convinced they will want to finish this asap and not go to members though.

I would accept the MPs decision as it should (in theory) mean that the new PM can get votes through the house. The problem with the membership choosing is, as we’ve seen, is that the MPs don’t necessarily agree and will stop any progress of anything in the house.

The thing is, is that the MPs threw out Boris (not getting into whether that was right or wrong) when the membership loved him and didn’t want a leadership contest at all. The party didn’t seem to understand that and forced the contest but implicitly accepting the members new decision.
It’s a mess and I agree that all parties should look closely at how they choose leaders. Essentially it has to be someone with the confidence of a majority of the house, nothing else works.

I think you probably meant older white voters.

I agree for the most part this is true. I’m 47 and white, maybe not old quite yet!
My local association is nearly all white and older than me.

Being a member doesn’t give us any more understanding of economics, business, trade, etc. so I think it’s hard to say we should have known what was coming. Also, they tried to go further and faster than had been talked about over the summer.

Priti Patel, Alok Sharma and Shailesh Vara are backing Boris Johnson.

bevelino · 22/10/2022 13:05

@AConservativeMember thank you for pointing out my error. I did intend to say older white voters.

There is nothing wrong with that but they are less likely to vote for Sunak.

Skyellaskerry · 22/10/2022 13:15

@AConservativeMember thanks for replying, I appreciate it! I’m baffled as to why the members have had to be included this time, potentially anyway.

SuspiciousHedgehog · 23/10/2022 05:46

Honestly, Tory, don't be scared, this is a faceless forum, nobody will seek you out and burn your house down.

Namechange is understandable, not coz you're a victim, quite the opposite... Because you are rightly ASHAMED

PrioritiseCalm · 23/10/2022 06:23

Actually, taking an interest in politics (which is kind of a pre-requisite for joining a political party) should mean that someone is better informed about economics etc. than a randomer off the street. If they're interested to the point of joining a party, surely they read around the subject a bit? Or at least look further than the Daily Mail to inform their views?

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to apply to tory party members.

My theory is that Liz Truss was elected by the members due to a combination of racism and the fact that she played up to the sick Thatcher fantasies so many of them harbour.

Octomore · 23/10/2022 08:54

Also, they tried to go further and faster than had been talked about over the summer.

And this doesn't wash.

Liz Truss told us what her approach would be.... and then she did it. Only a fool would claim that the utterly unfunded tax cuts were a surprise.

Octomore · 23/10/2022 08:59

Any MP or member of the Conservative party that voted for this woman should fucking well hang their head in shame. This isn't just about differing views on how to run the country - this is about a group of people totally trashing it.

Ignorance is no excuse. If you're too ignorant to tell the difference between what Sunak and Truss were proposing, then you shouldn't fucking participate in the vote to choose between them.

And I say this as someone who is no fan of Sunal either. But it was clear to me back in August that he would be least damaging.

Zipps · 23/10/2022 09:01

Why Boris Johnson? I thought they had kicked him out because he told so many lies/ was useless.
But then he is a serial cheat so I bet he's making promises never to do it again just like he tells his women.

User135644 · 23/10/2022 09:01

Letting retired golf club bores decide who should run the country, What could possibly go wrong?

mellongoose · 23/10/2022 09:03

Liz Truss was elected for the simple fact that she was not Rishi Sunak. It's not racist because if Kemi had been put forward alongside Rishi, Kemi would now be PM.

Like it or not, Rishi is seen as a traitor to the party faithful and they will vote in anyone but him.

He's also seen as a billionaire puppet of other faceless grey suits. He's just not who they want.
