Correct. Members will vote.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/10/2022 18:16

oh, but a lot quicker than last time?

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 20/10/2022 18:32

There's only an online vote if there's a choice of candidates at that stage. It's open to the parliamentary party to decide by themselves and sew it up, as happened in 2016.

saltnvinegarpringles · 20/10/2022 18:37

Members will only vote on candidates who receive over 100 endorsements from Tory MPs. Meaning Boris, Suella etc are unlikely to get the required number of endorsements.

If only one candidate receives over 100 endorsements, then that candidate automatically becomes PM and members don't vote.

They've done it that way to stop Boris or a far right candidate like Suella getting in.

If Truss and Kwarteng had any decency they would decline their pensions for those offices just vacated, out of respect to the people they have beggared and the cuts we will all have to endure to undo the damage done by Kwarteng .

But there's no danger of that, is there.

Damn right, there isn't

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 20/10/2022 18:42

I think Boris' "Hasta la Vista, baby" was coded hint for "I'll be back"

EsmaCannonball · 20/10/2022 18:59

George Canning famously fought a duel with Viscount Castlereagh over political intriguing. If the Tories are looking for a quick and decisive way of finding the new leader ........

They have done it that way so there is not another protracted leadership race.
Boris will get 100 votes without a doubt. (no I don't want him back but many do as they see him as the only way to keep their seats come the next election and the only way to prevent a General Election before they have to have one) Potentially 3 will go forward on Monday.

TheGhostOfLiz · 21/10/2022 08:42

A number of commentators are doubting he's got 100 supporters to reach that number.

I don't know either way and would prefer not to see him come back - not least because it'll futher play into his Churchillian Fantasy.

I don't much fancy any of the other choices either though. I am growing weary of having to adjust my personal budget every 2 days based on tax promises made and unmade over and over. No doubt, Sunak will reintroduce the HSC Level again.

I guess we'll know by Monday either way.

j712adrian · 21/10/2022 12:01

I wonder who all the Kremlin operatives overseeing the Conservative Party members' vote will plump for?

FlorettaB · 21/10/2022 12:02

Do you need to sabotage something that’s already imploding? It seems like a waste of effort.

MrsMAgain · 21/10/2022 12:08

What I do know is that I'm feeling physically quite sick at just the possibility of Boris Johnson as a replacement, and at the sight of his face popping up at the moment on the news again.

shadypines · 21/10/2022 12:44

Please BBC stop inflicting members of Joe Public on us telling us 'we need Boris, at least he's a character'. if by character they mean he couldn't comb his hair, tie a tie and spent half the time dressing up like an episode of Mr Benn.
Personally I'd rather have someone with not only a good political brain but decent morals which meant there wasn't a circus of allegations, investigations and police reports constantly overshadowing and distracting any sense of meaningful government. Which is what we had for the last few years.

Yes, there does seem to be a lot of ‘pro Boris’ propaganda from the Beeb

This. I'm tired of a public so stupid they see 'being an attention seeking narcissist' aka 'a character' as a worthy choice to lead a country. The same public so stupid they will later cry about their inflated mortgages and the fact the NHS is going down the toilet.

Stop being so fucking suicidally stupid, British public!

I was talking to a conservative voter this morning - I'm not a conservative voter. He started talking about the possibility of Johnson getting back in and how great it would be.

When I pointed out that he had to resign because of, among other things, all the lying, I got the response 'what did he lie about?' repeated several times.

This from a reasonably intelligent adult.

Where do you begin. I gave him an example of several of Johnson's lies but apparently I was being ridiculous. Because, apparently, according the this man and a large percentage of the population, lies aren't important in an PM just as long as he's a 'character'.

God help us. Stupid doesn't come close to describing some people's mindset.

Boris and Carrie would get to redecorate!! Oh and when we mention Liz we forgot or didnt know that as Foreign Secretary she was entitled to this

Surely Liz hasn't had the opportunity to redecorate yet? The dreadful decor should still be there?

shadypines · 21/10/2022 13:55

On Boris's penchant for dressing up, one of his parting shots was being seen flying about in a jet like bloody Tom Cruise in Top Gun.
Not entirely sure what this has got to do with running a country but perhaps @pigsDOfly your Tory voter acquaintance could enlighten us....

EsmaCannonball · 21/10/2022 14:10

Oh god, Boris Johnson's Churchillian comeback fantasy, except the filling in the sandwich was the female Mr Bean and some lettuce jokes, not Clement Attlee and the foundation of the NHS.

Oh, I'm sure he could find a reason that makes sense, to him.

He seems to feel Johnson can do no wrong. I find it all very bizarre.

I emailed our Tory MP this morning saying something somewhat similar (but less witty) He's actually got back to say absolutely no way is he voting for BJ under any circumstances.

He's Churchill (very) lite, like Truss was Thatcher ditto. It hard to fathom how some people take their toddlerish cosplay seriously, but they do (I'm trying to think of an equivalent for JRM but only Dickens could do justice to him)
