Enjoying Anthony Selsdon on the BBC , ' she lasted 44 days, Canning lasted 119 days, but he died in office, so he couldn't really do anything about that '

It's madness that the system allows a small pool of members of the public, who pay their £25 to become a Tory party member, to decide two PMs in two months. Farcical anti-democratic shit.

The general public NEVER vote for a PM - they vote for the party, and the party selects it's leader who becomes the PM.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/10/2022 15:31

George Canning is pouring himself a glass of port in the next realm, delighted with himself for no longer holding the title of 'shortest serving PM'.

LadyHarmby · 20/10/2022 15:26

This is a mockery of democracy

It really isn’t. We get to vote for a political party, and they get to vote for the leader of that party. There’s nothing undemocratic about it. We don’t get to vote on prime ministers.

We vote on a manifesto and policies, all of which the tories have abandoned.

general election now!

Not gonna happen. Sorry.

As I said on another thread... as long as the Conservatives stick to the manifesto laid out when they won fair and square in 2019, there won't be a general election. And no-one can demand one. Because it's about the party and their manifesto, not the leader.

Liz Truss was starting to veer from the manifesto, but she has gone now, and the people left behind are steering it back. So I wouldn't expect a general election any time soon.

I would like for there to be a general election SOON yes, but it won't happen. Next one will be mid 2024 (sadly.)

StrongCoffeeAvalanche · 20/10/2022 15:32

@GrabMyParaplu I don't like any of them but feel she didn't mess up as much as BJ....

It must have slipped your attention but the Tory party members (who are yes, the general public) vote on the shortlist and the one with the most votes then becomes PM. Did you miss the 6 week pageant between Truss, Sunak, Mordaunt et al? Confused

pigsDOfly · 20/10/2022 15:33

It probably goes against their rules but I think they should just bypass the Conservative membership and put Rishi Sunak in. After all he was runner up last time.

If it goes back to the membership he's unlikely to be elected.

They chose Johnson and then when he had to go they looked at Truss and Sunak and plumped for Truss. Why?

I have my own theory about that, that is, apart from the fact that they're a bunch of idiots.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/10/2022 15:33

Imagine not knowing that!

They're already abandoning their manifesto pledges.

Pedallleur · 20/10/2022 14:12

Liz does get her £115k pension and her picture on the #10 staircase so not bad for 43 days

OK you've persuaded me. I'll do a quick stint. Where do I apply?

longwayoff · 20/10/2022 15:36

The people who chose Teresa May, ditched, followed by Bozo, ditched, followed by Truss, ditched, are now to be entrusted with choosing yet another PM. No wonder they're so contemptuous of us. Roll over and take some more Great British Public.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/10/2022 15:40

Well yes, but Canning died - which is as good an excuse as any for quitting the job Wink

And of course the Tories won't be calling a general election; they know exactly what would happen, and while they're not united on anything else that would almost certainly do it
Unfortunately, in the meantime, they'll go on slashing and burning to get a place jostling at the trough before it all finally falls in

Emotionalsupportviper · 20/10/2022 15:47

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 20/10/2022 14:29

My vote is for Huw !

I agree - DA is too old, unfortunately, and JL, lovely as she is, is chummy with Johnson.

Huw it is, then.

Yes, it would be one thing if they thought they might get to keep maybe 250 seats, sit out an unpleasant few years and regroup. Some of them might be more inclined to go for it then. As it stands, the large majority of them know they would lose their seats. Could end up on sub 100. Of course they won't vote for that.

Not just because it rhymes . . . 😉

If Truss and Kwarteng had any decency they would decline their pensions for those offices just vacated, out of respect to the people they have beggared and the cuts we will all have to endure to undo the damage done by Kwarteng .

But there's no danger of that, is there.

FiveMins · 20/10/2022 16:29

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps I often wonder if you are a parody account. Very obviously they have broken many of their election pledges. A quick Google will show.

Fromthedarkside · 20/10/2022 16:29

It's better than Coronation Street 😂

We deserve a general election.

HappySalmon · 20/10/2022 17:23

Did I hear right that just MPs will be voting for the new leader, the party members won’t be voting this time? In that case they should just put RS in post as he got most of the MP votes a few weeks ago, it was only the party members voting for LT that got her the job over him and let’s face it they were likely all wealthy people who were going to benefit from what she was planning to do so of course they voted for her, they had no idea what she was planning to do was totally ridiculous and not thought out.

the reports I've read say that Tory members are getting an online vote.
