What should I do with an avocado?

Looking for inspiration with what I can do with an avocado. I know I can have it on toast but wondering what else I can do with it?

Whats your favourite avocado recipe?

Serve with a spoonful of prawn mayo 😋

saraclara · 20/10/2022 00:42

I hate it mashed. It just turns to slime. But chopped, or diced and very gently crushed.( but still with visible dice for texture) is great.

Chopped, with finely chopped tomato and even more finely chopped red onion, plus lemon juice and coriander makes a lovely salad or side to go with chilli.

Gently crushed on toast and topped with feta, which has been briefly marinated in olive oil and dried oregano. Add a poached egg as well if you feel like it. And even some bearnaise for a really lush brunch..

Haha no tho family legend says I did as a child.
The ones at work are usually smallish tbf. Genuinely puzzled as to why this is odd as I have eaten them this way for years. Otherwise with tomato, cucumber, red pepper and cold chicken.

I regularly do this. Is it weird, then?!

Feed it to a chinchilla?

Readinstead · 20/10/2022 01:07

Leave it on the supermarket shelf.

Sliced on a plate with lemon juice, black pepper, and crispy bacon.

Add some chunks of fresh mozzarella if you're extra hungry.

@ManAboutTown - that reminds me of something I once read by Elizabeth David. How to treat a cucumber. - Peel it carefully - slice it very very thinly and then - throw it in the bin as it is fit for nothing. She does have recipes with cucumber but I admire her humour.

Make a dressing by puréing avocado with mint, feta, basil, coriander, chili oil, garlic, red wine vinegar and toss it through chilled watermelon and strawberries and peppery rocket and thinly sliced red onion with toasted blanched, sliced almonds (or pine nuts) for crunch. It’s stunningly pretty and delicious!

ManAboutTown · 20/10/2022 06:29

@BasiliskStare - I have the same thoughts about cucumber - they taste of nothing. Bit like watermelon

Eggy bread, fried tomatoes with lots of herbs and a sliced avocado on top. Season with salt, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. My favourite brunch.

My late uncle, who was lucky enough to have an avocado tree in his garden (not in the UK obviously) used to eat his with Worcester sauce in the stone cavity.

We eat them with Worcestershire Sauce!!!

Or on marmite spread toast Grin

@chopc sorry I couldn't find my copy of the recipe - I did manage to get most of it from the telegraph tho and have added the photos here. Do what it says but also roast the real tomatoes in the oven (I do it with pepper and some balsamic) for 20 mins or so then add them to the mix - put it all back in the avocado halves and bake for 20-30 minutes (with foil if starting to burn on top).

I serve them with mini boiled potatoes, asparagus or broccoli spears, and Waitrose romesco recipe.

Toasted sourdough bread with pesto. Add avocado and plenty of chopped tomatoes

Bin it bloody horrible things Envy

HairyMcLarie · 20/10/2022 08:08

A classic sliced avo, sliced tomato and sliced mozzarella salad. Garnish with good EV olive oil, salt, pepper and basil.

Or

Piping hot crispy bacon, sliced avo in bit of ciabatta, top with brie

Half it. Fill the holes with vinaegrette. Eat with a teaspoon accompanied by brown bread.

This is my favourite way to eat it. Glad to get some new ideas though, I love avocado

BuryingAcorns · 20/10/2022 08:18

DH: Mash it with some oil and lemon and stir it through fresh egg pasta as a sauce

Me - blend it with greek yoghurt, hot sauce and lemon juice to make a healthy guacamole and eat it with veggie sticks and tortilla chips or pita

Also lovely in a salsa chopped finely with finely diced cherry plum topmatoes, red peppers, coriander, red onion and cucumber with a squeeze of lime

JustFeckIt · 20/10/2022 08:26

My favourite is rice cakes - layer of cream cheese, sliced avocado then drizzle with Tesco’s balsamic drizzle or cream cheese, green pesto then avocado.

Also add to Smoothies.

I have always mashed my avocados… never even occurred to me to just have it chopped, I will have to try this 😋

Slice shallots/red onions and marinate in balsamic vinegar for an hour or 2
Slice a mixture of tomato shapes and sizes
Slice avocado
Arrange avo and tomatoes in a large flat dish
Sprinkle over feta cheese, punchy herbs like oregano or basil, or dried herbs de provence, onions, balsamic, extra virgin olive oil and something crunchy like pine nuts or dukkah.

Guzzle.

I’m starving after reading this thread 🤣

Its one of DS (age 2) favourite foods. His favourite is Kee-See-Dee-Aaaaaaaaah (quesadilla to you and I 😅).

Mash it onto half a wrap, sprinkle on some grated cheese, add in anything else you fancy - we like peppers & tomatoes and I add sriracha to mine. Fold it over to make a semi-circle, fling in a big frying pan and toast both sides, cut into bits and enjoy 😊

MrsMorrisey · 21/10/2022 01:36

Make it a little outfit and stick googly eyes on it.
Give it a name and watch people's reaction.

Bin it and eat some chocolate Grin
