So now we're racing to the bottom about who is laughing at us and if they should be?

Really?

I'm just worried they have something to laugh at us over. Just because other countries may just be as bad doesn't make it right for us.

And there are countries struggling due to energy rises. There are countries struggling post pandemic.

But I don't know if any other country who hasn't had a functioning government for the whole of 2022 and their latest leader only had to appear in public to crash their currency.

ClaudineClare · 22/10/2022 20:06

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 22/10/2022 19:58

Jgwi I don't doubt it.

I just don't care...in the way some poster's do??
They seem incredibly worried that some jounro on le monde may have written some funny peice?

Why not laugh with them?

Who cares?

Because none of this is funny. People are worried about their bills, their rent, their mortgage, putting food on the table and where the austerity axe will fall. Meanwhile these tossers are fighting to be king instead of adressing theses issues. Having the UK's reputation trashed is not good for any of us.

TomPinch · 22/10/2022 20:10

Well, there are those laughing at the UK.

And then there are those saying the UK is getting relegated from the international Premier League.

Think of the situation.

The UK government currently has extremely borrowing and has to service that.

It has a budget deficit.

Its trade is in a weak situation as it's not yet settled post-Brexit.

Its government is somewhat chaotic.

And finally its political culture is not serious, with second-raters on both sides of the house dominating politics.

It's a dangerous situation. It's how substantial decline begins. Then the rot gets in. People's expectations of politicians change: they expect them to be on the take. Then the budgets get cut because there's no money. SEN provision goes from schools. Police solve fewer crimes. NHS waiting lists get longer and longer. The military no longer has any money for expensive new ships etc.

Then roads stop being fixed, water gives out, the grid starts malfunctioning because maintenance stops, rubbish doesn't get collected, the best leave for better living standards elsewhere. Organised crime increases as the police cant deal with it.

The end result is Argentina, once (per capita) the seventh richest country in the world and now a basket case.

Lonelycrab · 22/10/2022 20:10

'Laughing stock' 🥱. How many times has this been said

Its been said because it’s true.

We have a dysfunctional bunch of clowns for a government, that keep imploding because they are fools chasing unicorn. The rest of the world sees that.

Cornettoninja · 22/10/2022 20:12

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 22/10/2022 19:54

Rosette I'm being extremely presumptuous thinking you are repsonding to me because I'm not reading back far enough.

I just really dislike this whole they are laughing at us idea.

When everywhere is struggling..

Fwiw I don’t think many places are laughing in the sense they’re gleeful, although some quarters certainly are. I think it’s more of a WTF are you lot doing?!? Is this some sort of cry for help? Uncomfortable laugh. The UK is a lot of things but chaotic and unstable doesn’t usually feature.

Who cares?

@TheHouseonHauntedHill you don't care about the mess this country is in, because that is what is being laughed at.

ClaudineClare · 22/10/2022 20:13

TomPinch Exactly. But we should go watch moronic tv and not worry our little feather brains about it.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 22/10/2022 20:22

@Cornettoninja

Possibly.

We've been unstable for a while though after brexit but I guess COVID came.

A cry for help.

Who will come and help us ?

If I was a foreign spectator I would be happily diverted of my own countries issue's by having a good giggle.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 22/10/2022 20:25

So jgwi I don't care about being laughed at.

I care very much about the mess and at this critical time.

Shall we continue this discourse or perhaps all accept that not everyone cares about others laughing?

Downnotdown · 22/10/2022 20:26

@Janiie, 'laughing stock' hasn't been said nearly as many times as you've said things like 'he got Brexit done' (but he didn't because it's still not done), and 'he got us through Covid' (but he didn't because so many 1,000s of people died) and blah, blah, blah.

It is you who is on repeat with nothing new to add.

He negotiated a tariff free trade deal which most on these type of threads said was impossible.

Yes thousands died, sadly that happens in a pandemic. We are a densely packed country our death rate was lower than some other comparable countries. What BJ did do was open up earlier then labour advocated. Remember 'the Johnson variant' that Starmer wanged on about distastefully in July 2021? It would be armegeddon to open up! Except it wasn't. Starmer was wrong, as usual.

@Janiie I don't know if you were aware, but we already had a tariff free trade deal with the EU before Brexit as well.

Boris also managed to be the first PM to break the law whilst PM.

Yes jgw correct but many predicted we wouldn't get one after brexit you see, but we did. A success no?

Honestly the brexit threads were full of folk stockpiling everything!

DuncinToffee · 22/10/2022 20:50

Please list these FTA's, excluding the ones that are EU roll overs, and how much they are worth.

DuncinToffee · 22/10/2022 20:52

And the stockpiling isn't looking that laughable in the current situation.

Fladdermus · 22/10/2022 20:56

I used to do most of my online shopping with UK companies. Cadbury's Direct was a favourite, Next, M&S, Lakeland, Waterstones. No any more. Some have ceased to trade with EU customers because the costs are now too high and others aren't worth it as the costs are too high.

My friend posted me a jiffy bag with 6 bars of Cadbury's chocolate in. Pre brexit it'd be in my post box 2 day later. Post brexit I got notification from customs a month later that it has arrived and won't be released until I pay a £7.50 admin charge, VAT on the items in the bag, and provide receipts for the items in the bag. The package was eventually returned to the UK and neither me or my friend know where it ended up. Fucking brexit.

An absolute triumph.

To remove something that worked well for all concerned to replace it with something that was signficantly less good.
An absolute, complete triumph.

For which he should be forgiven for his law breaking, lying to the Queen and protecting a sex pest.

Rhondaa · 22/10/2022 21:02

'But we should go watch moronic tv and not worry our little feather brains about it.'

Strictly is moronic? Shock.

Glad you're too intellectual for that and prefer arguing on mumsnet.

Downnotdown · 22/10/2022 21:02

@Janiie, my point is that you are moaning about 'laughing stock' being repeated and yet you just repeat yourself all the time.

DuncinToffee · 22/10/2022 21:03

Oven ready deal, the lie on which he was elected.

@Janiie it is very hard to argue on mumsnet at present as there is no one to argue with, it seems everyone is pretty much in agreement that the Tories time is over.
There are a few outliers, but they don't bother to put up any defence.
For example there is a poster who constantly supports Boris, but cannot seem to explain why it was acceptable for him to break laws that he introduced forbidding parties, or why it was acceptable for Boris to defend a known sex pest when they repeated their behaviour.

At least with Strictly, the public gets to vote.

Quite.

Suspect the Strictly voting process is a bit more secure.
