Places you don't shop anymore and why?

Are there any shops you just don't go to anymore? Obviously due to the cost of living. I shop at Aldi and Asda. Might just go to Aldi now.

There is a bunch of shops which I would visit regularly pre-covid which I cannot be arsed with anymore: Poundland, Lidl, Asda, Pret, Sports Direct and almost all overpriced independents. I also stopped my organic boxes with Abel and Cole/Riverford. I must have been insane paying such a huge markup over so many years! I have started becoming interested in Waitrose and M&S again but only occasionally.

StrawberryPot · 22/11/2022 09:29

I avoid going into previously mentioned shops where you get constantly asked if you need help - lush, body shop, Holland and Barrett . It's a shame because I'd love to just be left alone to browse there, but I feel really uncomfortable with the staff hovering all the time - does anyone actually enjoy this approach? It seems to be more and more common

Totally agree. I never hang around in shops where I feel under scrutiny.

Surely it's obvious when someone might need help and when they want to be left alone?
Me head down browsing through a rack of clothes = no help required.
Me looking round quizzically and catching the assistant's eye = help required.

And I hate it when assistants ask if they can pop an item you're holding in the changing room for you. No!! I haven't finished browsing and might see something I like better!

I know they're only following company policy and will probably get into trouble if they don't do these things, but I do find it hard to remain civil!

I have a considerable list.

I don’t go anymore because they think my sex is a costume that can be taken on and off.

Me too

Luana1 · 22/11/2022 09:30

Lush and Bodyshop for the already mentioned reasons.
Waitrose because we can't afford it any more, Lidl is fine for us these days.

Welshy26 · 22/11/2022 09:33

Specsavers. Absolute rip off.

BovrilMartini · 22/11/2022 09:40

Top Shop

Because I got old and fat

BrutusMcDogface · 22/11/2022 09:41

Malabarhouse · 22/11/2022 09:30

Me too

I’m sorry, I don’t get this. Could you explain please, @Betahydroxybutyrate ?

TreacsPotNoodle · 22/11/2022 09:43

Zara.

The quality of most things is awful and the prices are getting ridiculous.

I also think it's hard to buy something in there without seeing 19374930 other people wearing it 😂

MartineàlaMaison · 22/11/2022 10:02

Everywhere really, these days, I find all these brands really uninspiring.
Went into Zara, h&M and a naice department store with DD: it all looked like acres after acres of dull, overpriced, depressing tat.
Tesco, Morrison, Sainsbury, etc. only buy the minimum there, in and out fast, the latest bargain for washing machine/dishwasher, that sort of stuff.
Food is from independent greengrocers and butchers, it's expensive but I strictly get what I need, don't waste anything, am not tempted by random things, so in fact I end up spending less and we eat better. But that takes time and not everyone has it.

FayeGovan · 22/11/2022 10:06

Jesus ive got no scruples. I cant afford them. If its a bargain I'll go wherever.

stuntbubbles · 22/11/2022 10:07

WHSmith because they force their poor till staff to go: doyouwantadailymailwhataboutagiantbarofchocolateforapoundorwehaveanofferonbuxtonmineralwatertwolitresheresaloadofpointlessvouchersyoudidntaskfor all with dead-eyes delivery because they know it’s a no.

Monoprix · 22/11/2022 10:30

I would say H&M but I still shop there, except only on weekdays when there’s hardly any customers, because of the queue at the till. Paying in H&M is a pain in the neck at weekends. There’s two tills and 35 customers lining up to pay. They should send the hovering, stalking shop assistants from Lush to help out at the tills in H&M!

AndysPandy · 22/11/2022 10:36

Lush - staff treatment and the breast binder disgrace
Body Shop - treatment of JKR
M & S - for allowing male fetishists into women's changing rooms then letting them leave their revolting reviews up on the website

drspouse · 22/11/2022 10:48

Lush due to the horrible way they treat women staff. Body Shop is similar but frankly I am not a teenager any more so it's no loss. I'm just a sucker for smelly bubble bars.
We have so little choice as I live in a small town so basically that's it.

CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark · 22/11/2022 10:54

Kate Spade stores.

The sales staff actually give me anxiety. I know it’s company policy, but back off and let me browse.

Reading the room is much more powerful then pouncing on me.

bloodywhitecat · 22/11/2022 10:56

Most supermarkets as it is impossible to take my little one in a wheelchair and do the weekly shop as I can't manage a wheelchair and a trolley. (I hate the fact that lots of people's response to our situation is "Do an online shop", online supermarket shopping is still fairly restricted in lots of rural places)

maddy68 · 22/11/2022 10:57

Not shops but businesses. Dyson and Wetherspoon's for the brexit propaganda

FrontDoor · 22/11/2022 11:02

The Body Shop. They don’t know what a woman is. So, farewell then camomile cleansing butter (the rest of your products went to shit years ago, though!).

Ragwort · 22/11/2022 11:07

I much prefer shops where you are offered help. I can't stand wandering around aimlessly looking for something whilst the sales assistants are gossiping at the till or rearranging merchandise and you actively have to seek out someone to help.

I work in retail and always offer to help .. but I hope I am sensitive enough to know when to back off.

Do they have Wetherspoons in Spain?

You can add John Lewis to the changing room sin bin. They actually make a big deal about how wonderful that makes them. Sell your overpriced womens clothes to men then, I don’t think that will be boosting the bonuses.

The one that causes me real pain is Wickes ( ‘no LGB without T’ ) because they are the only DIY who sell Plasticote which is my favourite spray paint . So I have to get it online or drive to Hobbycraft instead of just dropping in when I am at the supermarket which has the same car park - but I do! I didn’t let my plumber ‘nip down to Wickes for the piping’ I went and got it at B&Q.

Im not gay but I hate this forced teaming.

Cancelledtwiceover · 22/11/2022 11:30

The Range, whose prices never seem to tally with the stickers on the shelf. When I queried the £3 difference, I was told it doesn't matter, it's what's the till scans that does.
Really ?
Was met with 'i will mention it? '
To whom will you mention it, when will this take place, will they do anything ?
The shop clerk was about 16, so never said anything beyond a puzzled really, just told her I didn't want the product and walked away.
They really are appalling for customer service.

hennybeans · 22/11/2022 11:35

Pizza Express nearest me because they have mixed sex toilets. Anyone can go into any cubicle but they are all covered with and stink of urine. And the sinks are shared. Nope.

Morrisons nearest me because they have no staff on tills past about 6 pm when I do my shopping. No, I will not ring up a full trolley for a family of five myself at the self check out. And actually, recently a lot of the prices are higher than Sainsbury's which has better service and quality.

WHSmith, totally overpriced, the store is a mess and the upsell is irritating. Also, nobody on the till unless you ring the bell.

Nando's. Teens are keen but the food is overpriced, not hot enough, and the service is always poor.

Any pound shop type place. It's nearly all junk and even the brands are smaller than normal so it's not really a savings.

Hintofreality · 22/11/2022 11:37

Anywhere that regularly gifts or hosts extravagant events for “Influencers”. I will not contribute to wealthy, middle class, whites women to sit around a table in a 5 star hotel telling us how delightful Jo Malone’s PR team are 🙄

cobblers123 · 22/11/2022 11:52

Matalan! Those bloody self service tills that hardly ever seem to work properly, often no one using them as all paying cash or need a refund. Meanwhile a member of staff is hanging around the self serve area doing nothing while the queue at the refund/cash till is getting longer.

Also their card never swipes, it always has to be keyed in. It's been like that ever since I got it which is about 5 years ago now.

I've stopped going in so much because of the frustration.
