Places you don't shop anymore and why?

Are there any shops you just don't go to anymore? Obviously due to the cost of living. I shop at Aldi and Asda. Might just go to Aldi now.

Clark's for their misogynistic attitude to kids shoes. When dd was 2 she chose a pair of "boys" shoes (blue/green, orange elastic laces, much nicer than the pink sparkly "girls" offerings). The shoe fitter saud she couldn't fit "boys" to girls feet, that there were anatomical differences *etc. she let me pay for them though,,then write on the receipt "not fitted to fitter's approval, no warranty, no return". DD loved those shoes. She's 11 now, Clark's have barely had a penny from me since - unfortunately they are one of the very few shoe manufacturers who make a woman's 9 (my size), so I am forced to dip in if I need smart shoes. Oh, and I had a team member who'd been through their graduate scheme. She was dreadful!

*my best friend is a podiatrist, my neighbour is a physio, my husband is an ex-shoe fitter. All have confirmed that there are no anatomical differences in the feet of 2 year old girls and 2 year old boys.

Morrisons - because they changed their card scheme to something rubbish and their prices are insane. £6 for a small box of washing power that was originally £2.50 - I think not!

Laska2Meryls · 22/11/2022 08:30

Oxfam . When I was a cash strapped single mum and student one year I decided to ' ethically ' buy all of my Christmas presents and cards from their catalogue. Two items they couldn't supply and one was clearly faulty but they wouldn't refund me because ' they were a charity and therefore treated all orders as donations which couldn't be refunded' ..They have never got a penny from me again .. I still wont go into an oxfam shop and that was over 30 years ago !!

stuntbubbles · 22/11/2022 08:33

Most shops, for environmental reasons. Ashamed of my former addiction to tat from Tiger, Paperchase, etc.

Also, Holland & Barrett after I was approached by staff eight times in about 10 minutes. “Can I help you find anything can I help you find anything can I help you find anything.” I’d find what I’m looking for a lot more quickly if you’d all stop fucking interrupting me!

Lush due to their bizarre policy of pissing off their customers by repeatedly pouncing on them the minute they walk in. I used to spend loads in there.

This.
DD and I were pounced on and she hovered, DD walked to perfumes and I thought oh god that's us fucked.

She wouldn't shut up and I honestly wanted to say fuck off and leave me alone. I think I would have if DD hadn't been there. You know, because I lack manners these days.

I don't care how special and unlike anywhere else your fragrances are. Just leave me be.

PiggyInTheLidl · 22/11/2022 08:38

Jigsaw: prices skyrocketed
White Stuff: design team lost the plot
Body Shop: JKR business plus over keen commission chasing staff
The Understudy: (bar near National Theatre) Mixed toilets

Artygirlghost · 22/11/2022 08:39

Curry's/PC World: dodgy products and awful customer service.

Aldi/Lidl: awful customer service, long queues and poorly laid-out stores.

Primark: overcrowded and I always wonder in what conditions these clothes are produced (concerns over workers being exploited)

Superdrug: badly laid-out shops, always long queues.

Body Shop: too expensive and getting a bit old fashioned now.

Any shop that has really loud music on and where sales assistants pounce on you the minute you go in.

badbaduncle · 22/11/2022 08:42

Body Shop: JKRowling
Lush: forcing staff to be involved in that 'kiss' campaign
M&S clothing after being filmed by a man and told off for complaining as he "has dementia, have some sympathy"
Waterstones after being told off for breast feeding in the cafe (I had bought a drink)

Laska2Meryls · 22/11/2022 08:43

Yes, I hate going into Holland and Barrett now, and hardly ever do.. You can hardly get in the door before thay are on you..

PigLightingBastard · 22/11/2022 08:48

M&S, John Lewis, Primark, Lush and Body Shop for their attitudes to women.

Sports Direct because of the way they treated the woman in the queue in front of me for asking for a refund for an labelled as age 4 to top that didn't fit her 6 month old baby. Her fault for having a such a large baby rather than their mislabelling, apparently.

Claire's because DC1 accidentally shoplifted from there as a baby.

Squishedstormtrooper · 22/11/2022 08:54

Lush because of their spy cops campaign a few years ago.

Body shop because of JK Rowling and because I don’t support pyramid schemes.

KatRee · 22/11/2022 08:59

I avoid going into previously mentioned shops where you get constantly asked if you need help - lush, body shop, Holland and Barrett . It's a shame because I'd love to just be left alone to browse there, but I feel really uncomfortable with the staff hovering all the time - does anyone actually enjoy this approach? It seems to be more and more common

Also avoid Superdrug because they always try and sell you extra stuff - usually multiple extra items at the tills and I find it quite awkward when I'm just trying to quickly buy tampons and get out of there

whiteroseredrose · 22/11/2022 07:14

Starbucks for supporting Mermaids and Boden because I've been told he's a fox hunter.

Johnny Boden is a fox hunter?! I won't be buying from there again either.

Brokendaughter · 22/11/2022 09:01

Anywhere they let men in the ladies toilets or changing rooms.
Anywhere that flies a rainbow/trans flag & says they donate to transcharities.
Anywhere that the staff hovers if you dare even look at the door as if you might enter.

I mostly use small independent shops or online.

Waitrose, when they stopped the free coffee

It's back on!! Bring your own cup..x

MartineàlaMaison · 22/11/2022 09:07

Re, Holland and Barrett: but if you do need something or help finding something, it's either not in stock or they haven't heard of it Hmm yet

What is the body shop issue with JK Rowling?

Bluevelvetsofa · 22/11/2022 09:12

Last time I was in Holland and Barrett, I struggled to find someone to point me in the direction of the product I wanted.

blobby10 · 22/11/2022 09:13

Tesco since they started doing their 'Clubcard prices' v everyone else prices. I cancelled all my 'loyalty' cards when my kids left home and I wasn't buying enough to get decent numbers of points which coincided with the supermarkets changing the way points are awarded so they weren't as good any more. The amount of junk mail I receive now is way less!! Have no problem with Tesco giving clubcard discounts but please do it at the till not on the shelves.

Sports Direct when I didn't realise I needed to tick a box on their online order page if I didn't want one of their massive mugs and catalogue which I was charged for.

Heronatemygoldfish · 22/11/2022 09:16

Boots after they sold out to a US firm and became a clone of every other drugstore instead of somewhere selling quality and good value own brand toiletries and medicines. I still mourn the loss of their shampoo ranges.

I don't even go there for prescriptions if I can help it.

caroleanboneparte · 22/11/2022 09:20

Tesco.
I really resent their club card favouritism.

Next- used to fog the sales every year. Not bought anything for about a decade.

Same with River Island.

Boots, only if I can't find something in Savers Bodycare or Superdrug.

Argos. It's just past it's purpose now?

Travel agents.

Pizza Hut. Used to love. Now yuk!

PatientZorro · 22/11/2022 09:23

Body shop
Lush

Never will I darken their doors again! It’s no great sacrifice to be fair.

Wishawisha · 22/11/2022 09:27

I buy a lot fewer clothes than I used to so all the shops I used to buy clothes in really. Also shoes, cheap accessories. I mostly used Vinted or charity shops these days. For shoes I only tend to have two pairs at a time and wear them to death which takes a while as I buy decent shoes now.

I think once you’ve stopped buying clothes fairly often it’s hard to re-start and the guilt is too much (a little voice inside my head going “fast fashion / landfill / fast fashion / landfill” every time I spot winter boots that look nice in a shop window). I never bought clothes to wear only once anyway but I’ve changed my lifestyle now and that’s that really.
