Range Rover Evoque owners - are they worth it?

Really fancy one of these, and am thinking of going approved used (looking at 2020 versions onwards)

However, I know they have a reputation for being unreliable, and needing a lot of maintenance/repairs.

If you have one, have you found this to be true?

I loved my evoque! Only had a couple of small issues with it in the three years I owned it. That said, horror stories from other RR owners put me off in the meantime and I recently bought a Q3. It doesn't have quite the same bells and whistles (rear cam instead of 360, no heated steering wheel), but the interior is more spacious and it feels more reliable

@PrincessButtercupToo
Not if it's spends most of its time in the garage.

Ours has only spent two days off the road in the four years we’ve been running it. Zero days would of course be better, but given how much it’s used (and the very unnecessary work DH has had done on the engine to make it go very fast) it’s not bad at all.

Small boot. I work for JLR so I'm reading the full thread now!

I used to want a Range Rover until I got a Jeep Compass Longtitude.

It looks better than a RR IMO and half the price. I love the front grill! Leather heated front seats and steering wheel, leather seats in back with pull out table, loads of room, keyless ignition, 360 camera, sensors, excellent sat nav and a decent sized boot with hidden compartment underneath. Phone charging points in front and back as well. Has done well in sand and mud so far, not tried in snow yet. Handles really well (6 gears) and has a lot of power (very smooth at 120mph on German motorways!). Fuel usage much better than old Quashquai as well, diesel with Adblue so meets ULEZ).

I pay £35 a month for a lifetime maintenance plan and insurance is low. No one wants to steal it either! Had read conflicting views about problems but none after a year so far.

Land Rover & Range Rover cars are known for having wiring problems, it's been known for years,

Yes, whenever I have a wiring fault, the garage tells me I do have 5km of wiring in my RR. Clearly it's unreasonable to expect at least 4km to be working at any one time.

I'd forgotten about the insurance. Thankfully I've finally found a mainstream insurer that doesn't require me to pay for a tracker (I gather they're fairly pointless in any case as the thieves know where they are and rip them straight off).

It wouldn't be so bad if the experience at the garage end was better. I've tried five local LR garages and they've all been dreadful. It's telling that all their forecourts are rammed with customers' cars waiting for repairs. I think that's the essence of the problem - the cars break so regularly that the service department is overwhelmed. I've noticed staff don't last very long in that department either, particularly the few decent ones.

It's a real shame as I'll never have a car that's so pleasurable to drive and luxurious, but that wears off after garage visit number 10 or so.

I did mock DH on a recent trip to France. As we were docking in Calais, I attempted to attached the magnetic UK sticker to the back of the car. Turns out it's all made of plastic! I eventually managed to find a metal bit on the corner as it goes round from the boot to the back passenger door, but because of the curve, it wouldn't sit flush. I left it there as there was no other option. It was gone when we stopped at the services half an hour later.

Lovely looking car. Literally made of plastic.

Thefailinghousewife · 09/10/2022 08:56

We have had several RR over the years and have now finally swore off them. They look pretty but they are ALWAYS breaking and it costs a fortune each time. We are rural, and DH now has a Mitsubishi L200 which is huge, and I’ve got the jaguar E pace for the family.

Isn’t that because they’re made from Aluminium, which isn’t magnetic?

But I have a Discovery Sport and wouldn’t recommend it. The RR dealer service wing are utter shit, really rude, I’d be here all day if I listed every issue with them. But my personal favourite- it went in for a recall software update following and oh so tiny risk it could catch on fire, and they only did half of it, leaving the gearbox to just turn off whilst driving. I’ve found a decent local 3rd party that are loads better thankfully but I wouldn’t want to give the main dealer another penny by buying a new car when they treat their customers which such contempt. It’s also been stolen, thankfully recovered because the tracking people are actually really good, but all JLR cars absolute thief magnets (according to the Met who were obviously having a slow night so were kind enough to pick it up for us) and it’s a stress that you really don’t need.

That’s the right material for the parts that are made of it.

DH has a variety of quite high-end cars and there’s incredibly little steel in the bodywork, they are all aluminium, carbon fibre or composite.

Steel is really heavy. The other materials, like aluminium are much lighter so that cars can be more fuel efficient, also aluminium is easy to shape and it’s also more resistant to rust.

EfficientDynamics · 09/10/2022 12:09

I've worked in the car trade for the last twelve months. We have range rovers come in part ex all the time and I've never, ever heard any of the technicians or sales people say anything positive about them

Everybody says they're absolute crap, meant to be very unreliable

They always fail the multi point checks!

augustusglupe · 09/10/2022 12:24

I had one for 5 years and then got the newer model in 2020.
I personally love them. I found it easy to drive from the start and I'd wanted a RR but the size of the things put me off.
i know everyone's different but I've read on other sites about them 'always being in the garage' but I have honestly never had a problem.
I added the tinted windows, bigger wheels and auto tailgate to mine.

As476 · 09/10/2022 12:30

I work in the motor industry. The only people that like them are the ones who sell them! No one else, customers, mechanics, parts departments etc etc actually likes them. Only the dealers that make the money.

they are incredibly unreliable and badly designed, in some cases you have to dismantle half the car to change something. I personally detest working on them. Even air con jobs are painful on those!

TwinsAndTiramisu · 09/10/2022 12:51

Yep. This. Every time we change a car, I always end up looking back at RRs, because there really is nothing as chic and with that really high end feel. Then I remember the last one, with it's two month garage stay as turbos got replaced, then the battery went puff, then the windows dropped open during the night for shits and giggles. Then the one before that, where I met the service department at 5am, where I was sleeping in it, waiting for them to arrive at 6, because the fucking thing was going along the motorway at 2am and just went "nope" and shut off. Recovery took 2hrs to arrive. I was in a stellar mood. Luckily the service department knew me pretty well, because it was probably my third visit that year.

They are so lovely. But if you've got kids, especially, you couldn't pay me to drive one anymore. Sod another "nope" episode if I'm driving them around in the cold, dark winter.

LondonQueen · 09/10/2022 14:40

I've driven one when my proper Range Rover was in for its service. For its size it's tiny inside, the boot is miniature and it's shockingly underpowered. Wouldn't buy one personally.

Daftasabroom · 09/10/2022 14:43

Get a RAV4

typos · 09/10/2022 14:44

Range Rovers sadly are horrendous on reliability. And when it breaks down which it will do it'll cost a fortune to fix. Then you'll be dreading the next time it breaks down, because it will.

LondonQueen · 09/10/2022 14:46

The Q7 and X5 are hardly comparable cars!

RhubarbFairy · 09/10/2022 15:10

Don't think it's made of aluminium. When I tap the boot, it's quite obviously plastic.

That said, we had another significantly larger vehicle drive into it when it was parked a couple of weeks ago, there's surprisingly little damage because the plastic yielded, whereas metal would have had a massive dent.

Anyone else noticed how the OP is long gone and we're talking amongst ourselves?! 😂 Hopefully she's not down at the JLR dealership 😬

sageandbasil · 09/10/2022 16:46

I have a jag e pace and I love it. I had the RR evoke as a curtsey car and didn't like it all. It felt so dated inside and it was so heavy

Gah! Wish I hadn't seen this,

I was looking to business lease an evoque.

I have a thing about pretty cars. I have a beautiful TT at the moment but was planning a. Evoque next!!

Back to the drawing board! 😭😭

Any suggestions?

Jaguar F-Pace :)

No, not down at the dealership. Just sulking because this thread has confirmed my suspicions!

Back to the drawing board for me as well!

Torn between a practical (but has to be sexy!) 4x4 or a less practical, sporty little number. I'm clueless!

SoldierBoy · 10/10/2022 08:56

I've had an X3 for the last 5 years and absolutely love it. Would take a lot to make me change from that now, apart from an X5 which I also love!
