Range Rover Evoque owners - are they worth it?

Really fancy one of these, and am thinking of going approved used (looking at 2020 versions onwards)

However, I know they have a reputation for being unreliable, and needing a lot of maintenance/repairs.

If you have one, have you found this to be true?

DH has one. It has heated leather seats which are great in Winter and plenty of room in the interior, but as others have said, tiny boot. The cruise control is easy to use but I don't like the sat nav. Much prefer the one I have in my quashqai, which tells you the speed limit on the dashboard, rather than having to look at the screen. In fact, apart from the leather seats, it doesn't really do anything extra that mine doesn't. It does look nice but not worth the extra money, I'd say.

Dirtybirdy · 08/10/2022 19:21

Thanks all. It would definitely be a fur coat/no knickers car for me - no towing or off-roading, but I've worked my arse off for it and it's the one I really fancy!

Wondering if I need to just set up a direct debit into a needy car fund?!

Although am also looking at the Audi Q7 and BMW X5.

@ivfbabymomma1 I’m on the Nextdoor app and there are several posts a week about RRs (all types) being stolen (Outer London)

LynneBenfield · 08/10/2022 19:28

The Q7 is enormous in comparison!

I wouldn’t bother with an Evoque though but imo the Q7 & Evoque aren’t really comparable.

DailyMaui · 08/10/2022 19:29

My neighbour has one and she now hates it - small boot, unreliable, expensive to run and surprisingly small inside the cabin for such a large car. When I got my new car the neighbour wanted to have a sit in it and the teens went and sat in hers... the verdict was ours was more spacious for tall teens in the back and they thought more comfortable. And I do not have a fancy car. It's a New Kia Sportage which I love but it isn't going to win any awards for prestige. However I can fit the family, lots of luggage and a massive hairy dog (donkey) in the boot. There's also a decent amount of kit for the price (I have the 4). I do love extras.

But you have to love what you drive and if you like the styling and don't need masses of room then get one. I used to own classic cars and they were very much style over practicality - one didn't go into reverse when warm, one used to cut out when too hot, another I had to tie a belt to the passenger door as when I went round a sharp turn the door would fly open unless tethered. One was so huge that I couldn't get round any corners in multi story car parks... And they broke down all the time. But I loved them so much that I didn't care as the expense and hassle made up for the fact they were beautiful to me.

Better off with a Hyundai Santa Fe or a Tucson if you don't need
4×4, Hyundai Tucson is the car of the year, I'm on my second one, have the top of the range model & it is bullet proof & a hell of a lot cheaper than the Range Rover. Look at reviews on YouTube, equipment levels are good even on base models, mine is 1.6 petrol, 177bhp, very nippy, reversing camera, back & front sensors, sat nav, heated leather seats, adaptive cruise control, wireless charging, big boot. If money was no object I would have another one.

You realise the Q7 and X5 aren't in the same size category as an Evoque? As I said previously, the X3 is more comparable from BMW and a Q5 from Audi

ivfbabymomma1 · 08/10/2022 19:35

@Wiglio I thought so!! I'm in the north west and I see at least a few posts a month about a stolen RR! Not sure if a particular model or not!

1FootInTheRave · 08/10/2022 19:49

Unreliable and they're renowned for being easy to steal.

I've had an x5 which was fabulous, currently got an x4 and also really pleased with this so far.

DavidMashie · 08/10/2022 19:51

Avoid like the plague. Our Evoque needed a new gearbox after 75000 miles. That cost £6,000. When we asked for now long the new gearbox was guaranteed, the answer was "one year". They clearly have no confidence in their own products.

Aubree17 · 08/10/2022 19:53

I've got one. Looks good. Very good.

Doesn't drive great and I don't feel safe. Also had a small issue with A/C. 2 years old.

I won't be buying another one.

crumpetswithjam · 08/10/2022 19:57

Get a Volvo. Much more reliable.

The Audi Q7 is huge and long . I went for the Q5 and absolutely love it .

keeprunningupthathill · 08/10/2022 20:03

If you live on my road in a suburban SE town please don't! We have loads already taking up space on the pavement parking and so hard to squeeze by. If you live in the country and have a big drive go for your life 😀 Bonus if you actually need a four by four.

There’s nothing wrong with buying a car because you like the style though.

We’ve a RR Sport, thé one with the silly big V8 petrol engine, and absolutely love it. It’s comfortable, quick, works great with the family and we’ve not had any major issues with it.

sittingonacornflake · 08/10/2022 20:13

I bought a 4.5 year old Evoque this spring. Lovely looking car. Comfortable to drive. Small boot though.

However since spring the following has gone wrong:

Windscreen - leaking - full replacement needed. Luckily paid for by Land Rover.

Rear camera stopped working £500 to replace - partially covered by Land Rover

Flat battery as left lights on - assumed they turned off automatically or would have beeped at me to let me know they had been left on but no.

Puncture to tyre, repaired and then punctured again requiring replacement (that's just bad luck of course).

Hoping that's it for a while as it's been an (expensive) nightmare!

JimTheShit · 08/10/2022 20:17

Get a Sport, they’re much nicer. Although if you live in London, expect it to be nicked fairly quickly.

BettyOBarley · 08/10/2022 20:17

DH used to work as an AA recovery driver. He always used to say how often he was picking up Range Rovers. Newish ones as well (on a couple of occasions brand new out of the forecourt!)

Shade17 · 08/10/2022 21:20

One of the shittest cars you can buy!

icedancerlenny · 08/10/2022 21:28

I had one of the new 2019 models and it was so bad I was offered a full refund after a year! I didn’t even ask for a refund! Dreadful car.

AriettyHomily · 08/10/2022 21:31

Tiny inside and a theft magnet

TwinsAndTiramisu · 08/10/2022 21:37

Have had several Range Rovers/Land Rovers between DH and I. I had an Evoque at one point, but the same goes for every single vehicle we've had by them.

Pros:

Aren't they swish. Prettiest, most stylish 4x4s by a country mile.

Cons:

The worst made, most unreliable, will have you swearing "I will never own another fucking range rover in my life" to anyone in hearing radius, thousands of pounds a year money pit of a car you can imagine.

Badger1970 · 08/10/2022 21:37

Dh has got a 2017 plate one, had from new. It's a Landmark edition so well kitted out, including the hill descent which is genius in ice (we live on a hill). Never had one single issue with it, it's passed MOT's with no work and he doesn't like the newer versions so has decided to keep his. It's not particularly fuel efficient on local runs but we did London and back recently (240 miles) on under half a tank. It's a brilliant motorway car, as well as a work horse getting through some pretty questionable rural roads in bad weather.

It always makes me Hmm when people diss them - best car he's ever had.
