Range Rover Evoque owners - are they worth it?

Really fancy one of these, and am thinking of going approved used (looking at 2020 versions onwards)

However, I know they have a reputation for being unreliable, and needing a lot of maintenance/repairs.

If you have one, have you found this to be true?

Not an owner but the yard owners daughter where my pony is has one and I’ve driven it a lot. It’s shite. It can’t tie for shit, it gets stuck in places even my old 51plate xtrail wouldn’t, it’s not reliable and her had had had to bring her back on a flatbed a few times because of issues with a software update. It doesn’t handle well off normal road surfaces and it’s fucked in the snow hence why it’s left. She takes the ranger and leaves it so we’ve got to use it instead. I suppose if you’re doing town driving it might be fine but pointless for what it’s meant to do

HighlandPony · 08/10/2022 18:09

Can’t tow for shit. Autocorrect fail

JudithHarper · 08/10/2022 18:11

What do you want to do that warrants an expensive, unreliable 4x4?

We bought ours new in 2013. Still going strong. Beautiful car, ours is white with black trim and a wonderful drive. But omg tyres are hugely expensive and has just cost us £740 to get it through the MOT! It is a money pit!

Violettaa · 08/10/2022 18:27

We borrow my DM’s occasionally…. When it’s not in the garage because it is always going wrong.

im also baffled as to how a such a big car can have such a tiny boot.

We’re now looking for our car, and an Evoque will be bottom of the list.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/10/2022 18:28

I've had one as a loan car. Bloody awful.

Augend23 · 08/10/2022 18:32

My friend has one, and she loves it. But she pays a lot for an expensive warranty (covers pretty much everything except the tyres) and the warranty has more than paid for itself Every Single Year she has owned it because so much stuff goes wrong with it.

I am also amazed how it can have such a small boot.

But it is very nice to be driven in and she enjoys driving it. She doesn't require any ability to tow or its 4x4 features - for her it's a status thing.

She is delighted with it. I wouldn't be, but I drive a decade old Toyota so I am not their target market.

Augend23 · 08/10/2022 18:35

Also the insurance seems pretty expensive compared to my car - it's what, 4x as much, and she can't get more than 35mpg from it on diesel I don't think, whereas I get nearly 50 in mine on petrol.

So overall it probably costs at least 2 or 3x as much to run, once you account for fuel, tax, warranty, and insurance, if not more.

Raera · 08/10/2022 18:37

We test drove one a few weeks ago. Incredibly small passenger compartment for the size of car. No good for tall people (like us)

LimpBiskit · 08/10/2022 18:39

Worst Range Rover by far. Discovery Sport is much more capable but more expensive.

Wakemeup17 · 08/10/2022 18:45

Evoque was made for yummy mummies, not for towing and stuff. But it's useless as the blind spots are exactly at the height of a small child so it's an accident waiting to happen on a school run.

Pretty cars though but better Range Rovers exist.

LegallyBlondie · 08/10/2022 18:46

I've had one since 2016, done 112000 miles in in it and it's just passed another MOT with flying colours. Tyres can be expensive, but that's to be expected with the type of car. I absolutely love mine and can't bring myself to trade it in! Ps I live in the middle of nowhere AND tow horses and I think it suits both jobs perfectly.

Tequilamockinbird · 08/10/2022 18:47

I had one for 3 years as a company car and loved it. I'd get another one, for sure.

Never had any problems with mine, and it had 360 degree cameras so blind spots weren't an issue. Good driving position, great satnav, comfortable seats, and an all round lovely drive!

It was an 18 plate and went back last year. I really miss it!

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 08/10/2022 18:50

Rubbish, tiny boot, expensive and poor service from RR afterwards

resipsa · 08/10/2022 18:52

I had a 66 plate for 3 years from new. HSE. Loved it. No problems. Beautiful interior. Nice touches like sunglasses holder above the rear view mirror. Now got Q5 which I can see, objectively, is a 'better' car but still miss the Evoque!

Got2besoon · 08/10/2022 18:53

Had one for 4 years and loved it. I had no issues. However, I bought from new. They do have a reputation for breaking.

Got2besoon · 08/10/2022 18:53

Oh echo PP, tiny boot! That was a drawback.

tootrueblue · 08/10/2022 18:56

Hugely unreliable with lofty servicing and maintenance costs. Have a look at the BMW X3 from 2018 onwards.

Beebumble2 · 08/10/2022 19:00

We had two Landrover Freelanders, great cars but they stopped making them.
( stupid mistake IMO.) We didn’t know what to replace it with, did loads of research and discounted the Evoque for all the above reasons.
We happened to test drive a new version of the Ford KuGa. Top spec, brilliant, huge boot. So we got one!

TooHotToTangoToo · 08/10/2022 19:00

I test drove one and couldn't believe how small it was inside. Even my kids moaned about feeling claustrophobic in the back

ivfbabymomma1 · 08/10/2022 19:01

There seems to be loads getting stolen recently?

IamChipmunk · 08/10/2022 19:05

Ive got a 17 plate, its a lovely easy drive. I went from manual to this automatic and wouldn't go back. I like it because im quite small and its big enough to feel big but be small enough to park without too much effort.
I like the fact its a bit higher up, also use the 4x4 occasionally in the snow and the odd field or on gravel and find it helpful.

However it has downsides as pp have mentioned! The boot it tiny for the size of the car. We cant use it as the 'family car' (2 adults, 2 primary age kids) if we go away because you can't fit everything in... (last time we had to put all the excess in the back round the kids and filled that too. Far from ideal)
Also it constantly needs software updates and only approved range rover places can do it and they charge stupid amounts which I refuse to pay!! (last time i checked £119 just to 'diagnose' even though I told them it just needs a software update!) So mine constantly tells me the battery is low even though it isn't!
Its electrics are also dodgy and give me random warning messages most of which are nonsense!

Overall I do like it though...however im not sure if I would get another!!

ChipsforMe · 08/10/2022 19:09

its a fur coat and no knickers car

style above substance

RhubarbFairy · 08/10/2022 19:12

DH has one. He likes pretty cars (moved away from his beloved BMW for one) and he loves it.

It's very pretty, we find it comfortable and DH is 6'2 so I don't agree with the post about it bring unsuitable for tall folk. Roomy back seat but as others have said, surprisingly tiny boot. We've not tried to tow with it.

Unless you buy one with the upgrades, the huge fancy screen is a bit shit as standard. No GPS or camera inbuilt, they're add ons.

In short, I feel fancy getting into it, but it's definitely more for status than practicality.

chrispenrallt1 · 08/10/2022 19:17

Get a VW Tourareg. I’m on my third now and I love it . I have driven many many 4 x4 s in my time but this is the best . Brilliant for towing and off road . Goes over our fields no problem
