Range Rover Evoque owners - are they worth it?

Really fancy one of these, and am thinking of going approved used (looking at 2020 versions onwards)

However, I know they have a reputation for being unreliable, and needing a lot of maintenance/repairs.

If you have one, have you found this to be true?

We have had two RR sports - a 2017 and a 2022 and not had any issues with them plus they are roomy and handle incredibly well.

We tried all the top SUV type cars and nothing could match the sport for handling on country roads.

The evoque has a tiny back seat and doesn't get good reviews.

Could you stretch to a sport? Try leasing one it's often a cheaper option than straight out finance.

fucketyfuckwit · 08/10/2022 21:42

Gah! Wish I hadn't seen this,

I was looking to business lease an evoque.

I have a thing about pretty cars. I have a beautiful TT at the moment but was planning a. Evoque next!!

Back to the drawing board! 😭😭

Any suggestions?

BasicDad · 08/10/2022 21:56

As others.

It's limited as a family car. Comparatively at least, as I used to family car in a Fiat 500 and got by.

They're very pretty. Especially the 2018 onwards models with R-dynamic. Good quality interiors, yes a bit small, but perfectly doable. If you're after a super practical car, then probably not.

Handles all roads well, but not an off roader. Easy-ish to park, especially fitted with the parking extras. Full length panoramic glad roof is nice. Premium audio upgrade is decent.

My partner bought one, as it's been her dream car. She got 69 plate, pretty fully loaded. Had one glitch in 2 years on the centre entertainment screen. Other than that,.it's been great. Dealership are good too.

8/10 for me if it fits your needs.

They get stolen all the time. I suppose it depends where you live, but I wouldn't get one just because of that.

Have had several Range Rovers/Land Rovers between DH and I. I had an Evoque at one point, but the same goes for every single vehicle we've had by them.

Pros:

Aren't they swish. Prettiest, most stylish 4x4s by a country mile.

Cons:

The worst made, most unreliable, will have you swearing "I will never own another fucking range rover in my life" to anyone in hearing radius, thousands of pounds a year money pit of a car you can imagine.

We’ve been really lucky with ours, we got a RR Sport Autobiography with all the options (fridge included) with only 30,000 miles on it for £35,000, down from a new price of about £120,000 only a few years before.

We budgeted for the inevitable issues, but so far in three years ownership have only had to replace the suspension pump for about £1,000.

Our insurance for just the RR Sport was over £2,000. Husband’s selection of exotic supercars as a whole is about £500.

So yes, they are really a problem when it comes to theft.

Anniefrenchfry · 08/10/2022 22:03

I test drove this, it’s so pretty but god it’s cheapo crap build, when you then test drive a proper 4x4 you know it. From the sound of rhe engine to the quality of the fittings. I passed on it and bought a Mercedes ml350 which will go forever. You could immediately tell it was a whole different class of Vehicle.

for me it would be a hard no

QueefofSheena · 08/10/2022 22:07

I’d get a Volvo any day over one of these. Or a Mitsubishi if they still sold new ones in the UK. Both go on forever.

Misty999 · 08/10/2022 22:15

Love mine never used the 4x4, have the 2011 a manual I've had new breaks and pads and a new spring in the front pretty average as repairs go. However do not break the electric wing mirror £500 for a new one and nobody wants to touch it, mines currently taped in place 😂lots of room and feels very safe driving

TwinsAndTiramisu · 08/10/2022 22:18

Have also recently had the XC90....nice, more executive than stylish. Did nothing for me, a very safe, sensible, dull car.

Other 4x4s have included an X6, which was actually not bad, but forget using the boot for anything other than a little shop. Porsche Cayenne, really nice, very well built, you can get these second hand for a steal, but the mpg, least said the better. And a Q7....best car I ever owned, never should have sold it.

Wakemeup17 · 08/10/2022 18:45

Evoque was made for yummy mummies, not for towing and stuff. But it's useless as the blind spots are exactly at the height of a small child so it's an accident waiting to happen on a school run.

Pretty cars though but better Range Rovers exist.

Yep but if you hit the agricultural shows they’re touted to the horse owners as being good to tow if you don’t want to take your lorry etc. they’re not, they’re shit. I’ve seen a 20 year old rav4 do better.

quitelikelyto · 08/10/2022 22:30

There are so many nicer, better and cooler cars on the market in that price range

Tryingtokeepgoing · 08/10/2022 22:30

LimpBiskit · 08/10/2022 18:39

Worst Range Rover by far. Discovery Sport is much more capable but more expensive.

Discovery Sport is cheaper than an Évoque. It’s the new name for a Freelander and sits under the Évoque in the admittedly confusing LR range…

Range Rover > Range Rover Sport > Discovery > Defender > Velar > Évoque > Discovery Sport.

Though, Range Rover Sport, Discovery Sport, Defender and Velar overlap horribly in price…LandRovers product planners have squeezed models into gaps where no gap exists 😂

hamdden12 · 08/10/2022 22:43

They are absolutely not worth it. Had no end of problems with mine, electrical and gearbox. Changed it for an Audi SQ5 and will probably get another one or an RSQ3.

red4321 · 08/10/2022 22:45

Yep (RR Sport owner). Beautiful car, shame it never works.

I pay £120 a month for the warranty which is worthwhile but you have the following process every single time. Call the LR garage for a week as no one ever returns messages, book in for 8 weeks' time, have the same argument that the warranty pays for diagnostic fees (can be £800j provided there's a fault (warranty says it does, garage won't accept it), leave for car for several days/weeks, eventually get it back, twice with a large dent and scrape, then arrive home and discover the fault isn't fixed. And repeat. It was in the garage on 8 occasions for 2 months in total in 2019.

We're not just talking about little faults either. The driver's door wouldn't open from inside for a week (not even by putting down the window and using the handle so had to climb out over the passenger seat). Rear passenger door stopped latching so swung open by the pavement every time I turned a corner. Added to that are too many faults to list.

Genuinely I feel pity for the happy faces in the sales department buying their new RRs as I know what's coming their way. Rather different than the faces of the hordes of customers sat in the service department.

Despite being embarrassingly massive, the back seat of our RR sport is strangely cramped and claustrophobic thanks to the high front seats and interior fitting. Never again.

LimpBiskit · 08/10/2022 22:47

Dirtybirdy · 08/10/2022 19:21

Thanks all. It would definitely be a fur coat/no knickers car for me - no towing or off-roading, but I've worked my arse off for it and it's the one I really fancy!

Wondering if I need to just set up a direct debit into a needy car fund?!

Although am also looking at the Audi Q7 and BMW X5.

Q7 and X5 are both larger and in a different price bracket. If you're looking at those, I'd have a look at the Velar which is much nicer car than the Evoque and much more capable should you need it.

Abcdefgh1234 · 08/10/2022 22:53

I bought my first range rover evoque in 2012 and up until now its still reliable. Never had any big major problem. Gonna sell it and buy the 2019 or 2020 version now. I love it and its reliable for me. But i only use it for domestic uses. I dont do offroad with it.

Nat6999 · 08/10/2022 23:04

Land Rover & Range Rover cars are known for having wiring problems, it's been known for years, I had a Land Rover Freelander years ago, bought it when it was 2 years old, the central locking packed up within a year, the windscreen wipers sounded like an arthritic robot that smoked 40 a day, it had a wiring fault that couldn't be traced that cost me a new battery every 9 months, the back door dropped & was a nightmare to close, it was supposed to be my dream car but I had the RAC on speed dial it broke down so often & it wasn't cheap to repair, a new clutch cost me over £1k & that was over 14 years ago. I wouldn't touch an Evoque with a bargepole.

justasking111 · 08/10/2022 23:14

Heard a joke today

90 % of land rovers ever built are still on the road, the other 10% have reached their destination"

You know what they say,you can take a Landrover into the jungle, but if you wanna get home, take a Toyota!

🤣🤣

Tessabelle74 · 08/10/2022 23:15

My brother worked on designing them, Range Rover can't actually believe anyone buys them and none of the workers drive one, says it all really

MMAMPWGHAP · 08/10/2022 23:40

Our Nextdoor app also full of stolen Range Rovers.
On the basis of the info on there I wouldn’t touch one if you gave it to me for free.

We’ve installed a good third-party immobiliser in ours that needs a special sequence to be put in using the gear-change panels. Without that no insurance company wanted to get involved.

Does anyone read Which magazine reviews? Buy a Toyota. 🤣

DH has a Toyota, the “GR Yaris”, but as capable as it is there’s also room in life for something a bit more luxurious too.

@PrincessButtercupToo
Not if it's spends most of its time in the garage.
