Who also went to a Comprehensive school, did you travel on a plane as a kid? I didn't and I was thinking about the bit in her speech where she says she got an air hostess badge, and thinking that anyone in my school who'd been on a plane would have been thought of as posh? In my school people holidayed in the UK if at all.

Similar age. Went to a comp in a salubrious part of the SE. Despite the inhabitants of the area being generally wealthy, v few people flew on holiday. Most drove to French campsites. I remember one girl who was really quite poverty stricken (free school meals, etc) which was unusual for my school, flew to Benidorm and returned with the most fabulous tan. I was quite envious and wondered how her family afforded it!

Perfect encapsulation. Flying as part of a package holiday to Spain was always a WC / lower MC thing to do - the '80s summer holiday equivalent of a '60s coach trip to Blackpool. Middle MC people were more likely to use the ferry and a campsite or gite.

Social class and money don't often show themselves in a linear relationship. Likewise poverty - which can be more about attitude, outlook and aspiration that cash.
