People around Liz Truss's age

Who also went to a Comprehensive school, did you travel on a plane as a kid? I didn't and I was thinking about the bit in her speech where she says she got an air hostess badge, and thinking that anyone in my school who'd been on a plane would have been thought of as posh? In my school people holidayed in the UK if at all.

Liz Truss grew up in one of the most expensive suburbs of Leeds, and her old school is an Outstanding one which people fight to get into

The school was rated "satisfactory" in 1995 (Liz Truss left in 1993);

At least with Davey and Starmer, you know they actually believe in their parties general direction

Ed Davey served as a cabinet minister in David Cameron's government/coalition and Keir Starmer served in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet.

Thanks for the replies, all very interesting. I'd imagine someone of 40 to have been likely to have gone as that's about when flights seemed cheaper as I remember it, could be wrong, but LT is 47. Seems a lot of you went abroad though! Rich folks of MN Grin

flingingmelon · 06/10/2022 20:34

I went to a comparable Leeds comp and I'm a bit younger than her.

I was considered posh as our holidays were always abroad (DF worked in an industry that gave us the chance to expense some flights).

I remember getting to go in the cockpit.

I also remember our year head telling us in class that the girls would all be married by 25 Confused

mintywinter · 06/10/2022 20:35

Definitely seeming from this thread that more people went abroad than didn't. It must've depended where you lived as well. In my school having a parent with a job like teacher would have been very unusual and also would have seemed posh/middle class.

I’m 55 so slightly older. Father pissed off and left my mother to it with very minimal financial support when I was 12. Comprehensive school I didn’t travel out of uk until I was 22 - elective. during university. Thank goodness for the then student grants!

flingingmelon · 06/10/2022 20:38

And I don't remember Roundhay being that posh, not like it is now. Leeds has got a heck of a lot nicer in the last twenty years.

DH also grew up in Paisley. Although they had one school that magically churned out people like David Tennant and Paulo Nutini (many year ago) he was sent to a school on the other side of Glasgow for good reason.

Madcats · 06/10/2022 20:40

I left comp school in '83. I went on a county orchestra exchange trip to Canada that Summer. We hosted the previous year (so I suppose you needed a spare room). I did a German Exchange thingy in '81 too (but that was by train and coach).

flingingmelon · 06/10/2022 20:41

And at least she doesn't hide the fact she went to a Leeds comp.

David Milliband went to one and he keeps it fairly quiet.

I'm 11 years older than Liz and went to a comprehensive school in Wales. Plenty of people in my year went to Spain on holiday every year. They weren't rich. They just worked in the Welsh tourist industry so couldn't have a holiday in the Summer so went abroad in October half term.

QueenofLouisiana · 06/10/2022 20:45

I’m a year younger. I first went on a plane at 7 or 8. We had travelled by ferry before then as I lived near a ferry port with links to Scandinavia. At 9 we went to Florida.
Divorced parents, state school until 6th form.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 06/10/2022 20:45

No I didn't (not until my 20s) - but a couple of people in my class did.

x2boys · 06/10/2022 20:47

I'm.a couple of years older then Liz Truss we went on holiday ,s abroad most years tbh ,I think it was cheaper and far more common in the 80,s my parents were not university educated but both worked at the Gas board ( as it was then ) with fairly decent salaries
By contrast my 16 year old has been abroad twice once as a toddler to turkey and the second time yo France with a charity my 12 year old has never been abroad

NooNakedJacuzziness · 06/10/2022 20:48

I'm a couple of years older than LT, went to local comp (south west). It was unusual to go abroad at my school - most kids went to Devon or Cornwall or at a push drove to France for holidays. I didn't fly until I was 20. So yes I would've classed someone who'd been abroad as posh.

Believeinyou · 06/10/2022 20:49

i'm 45 went to a comp - no grammar schools in area ( east mids). went on a plane more than i can afford now! Long haul as well as did many of my friends

MargotMoon · 06/10/2022 20:50

I'm 47 and grew up in social housing, went to state comprehensive. Went on holiday on a plane many times as a kid

lashy · 06/10/2022 20:54

I'm 4 months younger than Liz, from the NE, went on first plane at age 10, then at age 13, then again at age 15.
Some school friends had never been on a plane, some went once per year. Depends what your parents preferences were and their budget of course.

dalisdrippingclock · 06/10/2022 20:55

I'm a bit older, brought up in London, went to the local comp. We had at least one foreign holiday a year, as did most of my friends.

x2boys · 06/10/2022 20:55

When I wss a child in the 80,s we all travelled on my Dad's passport whatever the comparative cost for passports were then ,clearly it was cheaper for the whole family to pay for one passport rather than one each/ family member a cost you have to think about before even travelling abroad, my parents mainly booked self catering accommodation with entertainment or hardboard with entertainment I guess this kept the cosy down compared to mainly all inclusive holidays

Manasprey · 06/10/2022 21:01

1 holiday on a plane.

The only person I knew who went abroad in the 80s was well off compared to the rest of us. Both her parents worked. Mum a nurse and dad a manager in a factory. I grew up thinking nurses and teachers were minted.

Mrsfussypants1 · 06/10/2022 21:02

I'm a few months younger than Truss and as a child (age 10yrs plus) had a couple of holidays on a plane. Malta and Menorca, booked via teletext holiday page and later booked at the co op. I remember the teletext page going on for ages and wondering where it would land and we'd go. Working class family and always a last minute bargain. Before that it was the same caravan park every year. Parents always booked holidays in the same 2 weeks in June, back when you could take time of school for holidays.

2bazookas · 06/10/2022 21:04

My kids are all her vintage and went to state schools. As school children, they had all flown to the Channel Islands, one had flown to Birmingham, one to London, one to Greece. They'd also flown to Denmark and France (without us) with scouts and orchestra.

Damnloginpopup · 06/10/2022 21:07

I'm 49. Village primary, Comprehensive.

Family lived abroad - north eastern Spain and South Africa. We went most years to Spain (grandparents) either by ferry to France then down by car or sometimes by plane to Barcelona (later Gerona). 1982 we flew to Johannesburg and drive down to a place Southwest of Durban (trans air Portugal via Lisbon. I seem to recall it was around £2k for the four of us and we went for a month as dad took all his leave in one go. It was the only time the whole of my mum's side were together as in my grandparents and their grandchildren. I was the youngest, not quite ten).

Dad worked in a Barclays Bank branch, mum stayed at home but did some typing for an accountant. We did bed and breakfast in the summer (£5pp Inc a cooked breakfast) which paid for SA, our first video (betamax) and computer (zx spectrum 16k) which would otherwise have been unaffordable. Secondhand ten year old cars, cheap clothes, not having flash presents etc etc allowed us to have a nice house and garden with the b&b paying for luxuries.

Mrsfussypants1 · 06/10/2022 21:10

@lashy I've just read your post after I wrote mine. You could be me, I'm 47 this month, also from NE and had my first plane trip same age and agree with what you said about your classmates hols too.

lilybloom2 · 06/10/2022 21:13

I am her age, lived in a suburb, went to comprehensive school and holidayed abroad every year. It wasn't unusual

namechangeforthis66 · 06/10/2022 21:16

Im 4 years younger and yes went on a plane and no we weren't rich - far from it! Working class with one parent in work. Earlier holidays abroad were coach and ferry but I did go on planes in my early teens
