MIL wont wash her hands

Hi all,

How would you approach this? My MIL wont wash her hands after using the bathroom at mine. I'm a bit uptight when it comes to germs so this bothers me. I dont want to offend or embarrass her. What do you think I should do?

I have eczema and use sanitiser or wet wipes. Hardly ever use soap and water. Maybe she's the same?

That's interesting as I'd have thought sanitiser was far harsher than soap. Have I got that wrong?

IncompleteSenten · 07/10/2022 09:07

Your hand looks perfectly normal to me.
Maybe it's the light or the angle but there looks to be nothing wrong at all.

Your hand literally looks the same as every other ‘normal’ hand 😂 the way you’re so adamantly against hand washing made me think you were going to have some mad cracked, bleeding open sores all over your hand but come on, you’re just making excuses not to wash your hands now 😂 (which is absolutely GRIM btw).

I’m not adamantly against hand washing. I wash my hands after going to the toilet and before touching food or my face. I just don’t think you need to wash your hands just because you’ve been outside. MN is like a hotbed of pro-OCD content.

The picture shows that my first knuckle is red and cracked. No there is no pool of blood but I did say it wasn’t too bad at the moment. Largely because I haven’t been overwashing my hands…

Nobody except you is seeing this cracked red knuckle. Your hand looks completely normal.

Washing your hands after using public transportation isn’t OCD. It’s an easy and effective way to stop the spread of germs. This is well documented fact, not a matter of opinion.

Draughtycatflapreturns · 07/10/2022 11:13

I bet all these soap dodgers are dry wipers too. Vom…

@Cheeselog It really, really doesn’t 😂
Just get your hands washed after you’ve been out and about and on public transport ye filthy animal 🥴😂

DennySaid · 07/10/2022 11:39

I don’t think my hygiene standards are especially high, tbh - but I always wash my hands after coming home / shopping / using public transport because the water is often enough noticeably dirty if I do. Keeps me doing it!

@Cheeselog Has taken umbrage and started a whole new thread to complain about being told to wash her hands. 😂

I have no idea what this means so I may or may not be guilty

I'm not really surprised. Some of you behave like teenage mean girls rounding on someone. Girl's allowed an opinion and it doesn’t need to be yours. She doesn't need to prove to you that her hands hurt.

Brave and belligerent behind a keyboard.

She started the exchange by questioning why people would wash their hands after being on public transport, making snide comments like I don’t know about you, but I don’t rub my hands over the train and passive aggressive emoji. When people respond, they are bullies? She’s allowed her opinion, but nobody else is?

Interesting.

What's a dry wiper? I assume it's someone who doesn't wash their arse after a poo!

That is not what my thread is about.
I don’t care about what you think of me. There was a poster yesterday who spends 4 hours a day cleaning her flat. I care about the impact on people like her of reading on here thread after thread of people
calling others grubby and grim.

My question was genuine btw - I didn’t realise other people touched enough things on trains to be a material vector of disease.

If you don’t care what I think of you, then why are you telling me this?

If your question was genuine, you’d have taken on board what was initially said to you or looked up the information (Google is free). You did not. You argued, for hours, coming up with all sorts of reasons why this sort of regular hand washing was impossible and calling people OCD. You even posted a photo of your hand and argued with people about its level of redness.

You haven’t done this for the greater good. You’ve stropped off and started a thread to complain because people told to wash your hands more. Own it or not, that’s all that’s happened.

JackieDaws · 07/10/2022 12:54

I know its a tiktok video, this is why you wash your hands when you come home vm.tiktok.com/ZMFYQaUqf/

Just drop into the conversation “When baby comes I won’t be letting anyone hold him/her unless hands are clean.” Let her make of that what she wants.

What a lot of rubbish. Covid is spread by people breathing all over each other rather than from not washing hands

So why were the NHS and government banging on about us washing our hands then! If someone with Covid has the virus on their hands and then touches a door handle, how is the next person to use that door handle going to avoid getting it on their hand which they can then put near their eyes, nose or mouth. Why did we use hand sanitiser before entering a supermarket or clean the trolley and basket handles?!

Gingernan · 23/06/2023 19:01

I clean a huge office including loos. I know full well there are some nasty tummy bugs going around.Grim. The younger people shake them off but an oldie like me can easily miss several days work. I was so ill this week. Despite a lot of hand washing, colour coded cloths etc. Please people wash your hands and continue to use sanitiser. I feel like going back to the face covering.
