How long were you dating your partner before you got married?

Was having a conversation with my cousin about how long you should date someone before you consider marriage and wondered about other people's experiences. I've heard about people getting married after only months of dating and still together years later and people who waited years to get married and have ended up divorced!

Three years before marriage
We did split up , briefly , during that time
Been married over thirty years now.

MsRinky · 05/10/2022 18:14

10 years to the day, that was over 20 years ago now.

I think you have to add ages into the equation.

A couple who met in their teens are more likely to have years of dating than a couple who met in their 30s.

Also if a couple are older, 40s + and not thinking about children then it's the same thing no rush until they start thinking about inheritance taxes etc.

Yeah I agree! We were 18 when we met, 20 when we got together and were at uni and then finding our feet working so any quicker would have felt a bit rushed, but I can imagine if we met later would have moved in and married much quicker.

Met in the March
Married in the August
Been married 23 years this August

He is a much nicer person than I am
I wouldn’t put up with me for 23 years 😂

Yabado · 05/10/2022 18:23

Oh and he came home with me that night and never really left 😂

Six and a bit years for us. We've been married for 19 years.

Onthegrid · 05/10/2022 18:27

8.5 years, and we are heading towards our 30th wedding anniversary. Engagement was only 6 months though.

stormelf · 05/10/2022 18:28

3.5 years together before we got engaged then was another 1.5 year before we got married.

Been together 13 years, married 8

DoraSpenlow · 05/10/2022 18:33

Five years - but then I was only 14 when I met DH. 50 years married next year.

Blanketpolicy · 05/10/2022 18:41

3 years dating while enjoying our own space, 10 years living together. Now 19 years married. So 32 years together! 😱

Both on the same page throughout, never engaged, no proposal, decided we needed to do it for legal reasons when 7 wks pg and married 3 weeks later. Don't celebrate (or most years even remember) our wedding anniversary.

Butterfly44 · 05/10/2022 18:42

About a year and a half, but we'd been friends for years before getting together

CakeIsNotAvailable · 05/10/2022 18:47

Lived together after 6 weeks(!), engaged after 20 months, married at 23 months. Still married now (just under 5 years), with two children. I was in my 30s and DH early 40s when we married.

avocadotofu · 05/10/2022 18:47

Just over two years. We've been married for nearly 16 years.

Snozzlemaid · 05/10/2022 18:56

30 years, and still counting.

Moved in together after 10 months.

newtb · 05/10/2022 18:58

We met in early January and married at the end of August. First child was born the following July.

That was 18 years ago and I wouldn't change a thing.

Jackienory · 05/10/2022 21:32

beetlebrain · 05/10/2022 21:40
