How long were you dating your partner before you got married?

Was having a conversation with my cousin about how long you should date someone before you consider marriage and wondered about other people's experiences. I've heard about people getting married after only months of dating and still together years later and people who waited years to get married and have ended up divorced!

APurpleSquirrel · 05/10/2022 17:32

We got married exactly 6 years after getting together, engaged for 1 year. It'll be our 17th wedding anniversary next month.

reluctantbrit · 05/10/2022 17:33

9 years, 4 1/5 of those in long-distance relationship due to uni.

We are married now for 21.

Oncemoreforluck · 05/10/2022 17:34

30year anniversary next year.

Hadalifeonce · 05/10/2022 17:34

9 months after our first meeting. Over 23 years married.

Cheeselog · 05/10/2022 17:35

6 years and counting. We met at uni though and DP still isn’t fully qualified in his field, so we’re planning to get married when he’s done.

CbCV · 05/10/2022 17:36

Between 6 and 7 years.

We l lived together after 4 years and engaged after 5. Had quite a long engagement.

CbCV · 05/10/2022 17:36

Oh. And now been married 13 years.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 05/10/2022 17:40

The I was only 20/21 when we met. I was married at 23. It’s not too young if you know.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 05/10/2022 17:45

Engaged after 10 months, married on our 1 year anniversary. Coming up to 9 years married now and happier than ever

GreenLeavesRustling · 05/10/2022 17:48

Engaged at 18 months, married at 2 years after first date. Now 20years married.

ThisShitsBananas · 05/10/2022 17:51

18 months between our first date and our wedding day. Also bought a house and had a baby in those 18 months too! I had always been very cautious and slow moving in relationships but when I met Mr Shit I knew he was the one straight away.

ToThineOwnSelfBe · 05/10/2022 17:54

Got together in the April, dated till October. Then long-distance (different continents!) with a few visits. Got engaged in the August, more long-distance till we got married in the December . Married nearly 13 years, two DC. We've had our ups and downs, but we're still making it work.

Dinoteeth · 05/10/2022 18:01

I think you have to add ages into the equation.

A couple who met in their teens are more likely to have years of dating than a couple who met in their 30s.

Also if a couple are older, 40s + and not thinking about children then it's the same thing no rush until they start thinking about inheritance taxes etc.

Scoobyblue · 05/10/2022 18:04

We were together for three years before getting engaged. Then engaged for nineteen years (!) before getting married. Now married for four years.

mydogisthebest · 05/10/2022 18:05

We got married 5 months after meeting. DH was 23 and I was 26 (2 days before our wedding).

We didn't live together first. Celebrated our 42nd anniversary this year and are still very happy and very much in love.

Quite a few of our friends and family had long engagements (between 5 years and 14 years) and their marriages didn't last.

On our wedding day DH's mum said "I'll give you a year if you're lucky"!

BBBBMushroom · 05/10/2022 18:07

18 months

Mommabear20 · 05/10/2022 18:08

Dating for 3 years, 2 years engaged, will be married 3 years this November.

Whichwhatnow · 05/10/2022 18:11

Moved in with me pretty much three days after we met. Engaged within a month, married 11 months to the day after we met.

Not going to pretend it's all been sunshine and rainbows and in retrospect the engagement in particular was too rushed. But it has worked out pretty well and I wouldn't change anything. Just had our 4th anniversary last month 😊

hugoagogo · 05/10/2022 18:12

We didn't call it dating in those days, but we went out for about 8 months before moving in together. Got married about a year after that.
