You'd think that NATO would have the right to go in and secure the power plant to prevent a nuclear accident which would effect everyone in Europe.

I don't want my electricity to go off. I don't want to sit in a cold dark house eating cold baked beans by candlelight. But, by god, I'd choose that every single time over giving in to a mass murdering bastard.

The partial mobilisation in Russia is going so well, Wagner are doing this:

My latest:

Wagner Group lures foreign mercenaries with bumped-up salaries as Russia suffers losses

Russian paramilitary outfit liaising with organised crime groups in Latin America and Europe to recruit more fighters, sources tell MEE

www.middleeasteye.net/news/wagner-group-russia-foreign-mercenaries-salaries-suffers-losses

Extracts:

The sources said Wagner is rapidly losing fighters and equipment due to disarray within the Russian army itself.

Soldiers often quarrel with the mercenary units, and the Ukrainian military has forced Wagner’s fighters out of strategically important positions like the city of Lyman, they said.

And

According to the sources, Wagner has sought to replenish its forces by recruiting mercenaries from Turkey, Serbia, Czechia, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Canada, Moldova and Latin American countries. The foreign fighters are being lured with higher than usual incomes.

Pre-war, Wagner paid its fighters between $3,000 to $5,000 a month, but the sources said those rates had now been bumped up to $10,000.

Wagner is also believed to have contacted local organised crime groups in Latin America and European nations such as Czechia, Moldova and Hungary.

β€œThey would usually recruit people with solid military experience, but the invasion has changed Wagner,” one of the sources familiar with the issue told MEE. β€œNow they are trying to reach the individuals who will not hesitate to kill people and are in need of cash."

And

Wagner publicly started to recruit prisoners from Russian jails earlier this year and sent them to the frontlines in Ukraine. According to the sources, the recruitment efforts in prisons, where inmates are offered amnesties and salaries to take up arms, are continuing.

MEE reported last month that many former prisoners were used as cannon fodder by the Russian military to distract Ukrainian forces, and were often left behind during withdrawals.

Remember Wagner were going to recruit tens of thousands of men from north africa and the middle east. That obviously has gone really well and according to plan.

Spanish perspective.

Yes, I buy a Spanish newspaper about once a month when elsewhere, as I do those of other languages I know to various levels (five I suppose, but French stalled at GCSE and has gone backwards since). When in Spain my relatives seem to bring me a paper, possibly as a hint I need to brush up. There's often a lot on political party intricacies.

How is the Russia-Ukraine war being presented in El PaΓs today? Front page, then 2, 3, 4 and 36 with Russia being mentioned in an oil supply article.

What's going on in Luhansk/Lugansk oblast is mentioned far more than the Kherson offensive.

Image of front page, with largest headline text for advances in Luhansk amongst mobilisation chaos.

Pages 2 and 3.

Ukrainian advance in Luhansk, Poland on accommodating nuclear weapons, Russia admitting retreats and that chaotic mobilisation.

Brussels agreeing a new sanctions package plus analysis including on NATO at the bottom, with a sentence near the end: 'the Ukrainian Army, armed and trained by the allies, is already the most powerful and effective in Europe, an excellent Atlantic candidate'.

Then in the sports section on page 36, 'Spain and Portugal embrace Ukraine'.

A joint bid to host the 2030 Football World Cup. The bid would not be Iberian but European, say Rubiales the man in the middle of the picture.

'The [sport] leaders are confident that the war with Russia will end soon'.

A rag tag bunch of hitmen from the favelas of Rio are not going to compare with western military training and organisation. Those characters are more likely to kill each other for their money and run. Yevgeny Prigozhin is scrapping the bottom the barrel there.

There is no comparison against well-trained soldiers, fighting in their homeland, fighting for their lives and their families' futures. They have everything to gain by winning this war, otherwise everything to lose. A mercenary only has $10,000 skin in the game. If it was really worth their while going they would already be there.

RedToothBrush · 06/10/2022 17:49

You are in organised crime in Poland, Hungary or Germany.

Why would $10,000 be attractive to you with the very real risk of dying or freezing for months on end when you could be into drugs, prostitution or people smuggling?

1245J · 06/10/2022 17:54

Exactly my point. Take up will be low and if this is the plan, the war is nearly over.

MissConductUS · 06/10/2022 18:30

Here's a bit of good news from the US. Public support for Ukraine has increased since August, despite the nuclear saber-rattling from Trashcanistan.

Three in four Americans say U.S. should support Ukraine despite Russian threats, Reuters/Ipsos poll shows

WASHINGTON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Nearly three-quarters of Americans say that the United States should continue to support Ukraine, despite Russian threats that it could use nuclear weapons to protect its territory, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Wednesday.

The polling suggested continuing backing for President Joe Biden's provision of weapons systems, training and other military assistance for President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's government, despite concerns that the war might escalate if Ukraine is provided longer-range weapons that could hit Russia.

The online poll of 1,005 Americans showed that 73% agreed that the United States should continue to support Ukraine, despite Russian warnings that it could make use of its nuclear arsenal. Both Democrats and Republicans agreed, although there was more support among Biden's fellow Democrats - 81% - than Republicans - at 66%.

And in the most recent poll, conducted Oct. 4-5, 66% of respondents said Washington specifically should continue providing weapons to Ukraine, up from 51% in a similar poll in August.

[snip]

There is more to the article, but it goes into general news about Ukraine. I'm less worried about what will happen after the midterm elections now. With this level of public support, military and economic aid will continue.

Perhaps the Wagner group should pull their members out of Mali and send them to Ukraine instead.

Oh. Hang on: they went there this February; perhaps the ones in Mali are the ones who said, in effect, "Ukraine? Sod off sunshine, I'm not touching that!"

I expect Sudan and the CAP could happily wave them bye bye as well. Also Libya, Mozambique, Madagascar ... and I'm sure that Burkina Faso doesn't need them in the slightest, they have enough military of their own.

The meeting between the Ghanaian president and Zelenskyy is interesting given how much Russia has been courting the African countries.

In connection with absolutely nothing at all, Russia's largest map app, Yandex Maps, has now removed all state borders from its service.

Apparently, this was "gradually" introduced since June: "Our task is to display the world around us. So the map will show mountains, rivers, and other data usually found on such maps" Yandex’s press service said, adding that further changes would appear "gradually."

Well that one way of solving a political problem...

Completely agree for myself and dcs.

Very worried about dm, nearly 90, lives alone, far too old to be alone in the dark and mucking around with candles. And she won't be the only old person in that postition. Really hope any powercuts are in daylight hours.

β€œThe days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” Psalms 90:10.

Well, I can hope. Maybe even pray.

I'm very tempted to pray for Putin's health but I don't want to go to confession afterwards.

Mind what we were saying about responsible journalism. How does the Daily Mail get away with publishing such bile. It does nothing but work people up into a frenzy with anxiety 😑😑

It's atrocious and irresponsibl playing into Putin's hands.

Apologies for anyone who might have been at all freaked out, I had meant to put that a simple Google tells you the man quoted is a known peddler of wild conspiracy theories, not that the Daily Mail acknowledges that.

Sane and educated. There is nothing to be gained from reading the Mail. I only do because I love reading the farcical comments section πŸ˜‚ and love a wee celeb gossip story 😳
