Does anyone else find Martin Lewis annoying?

Or is it just me?

All the clickbait warnings earn him money - don't they?

I am happy to be told I'm cynical but I work in marketing and he's very much an influencer. Just an influencer with a different tone and agenda.

Anyway, happy to be told I'm cynical 😊

Martin Lewis is fab, he helps lots of people instead of sitting back, exploiting workers and counting his money. He's a Good Person. Remember them? We used to have a lot more of them in public life before we were all regularly encouraged to hate one another. Good for him. Wish there were more of him.

He's substance over style which is a rarity these days

That's exactly it. I don't think there's anything wrong with becoming financially successful out of doing something well that I don't see anyone else even attempting to do. That's what true success is - finding your niche and doing it well. Many many people have been helped by his and MSE's advice. Yes, his delivery on his TV programme may be a mixture of earnest and frantic but that's because I believe he's trying to impart as much advice he can in the time available so that WE, the viewers, benefit. There is no padding or filler. And with personal finance advice, it's such a wide subject, with constantly changing details, and so much can differ from person to person that you could easily double the length of the programme and still not be able to say all you want to say. There is a LOT to remember, and it's a live show as far as I know so if he sometimes appears to be frantic it's probably because of the pressure. He's not doing standup, it's really important to get his facts right. He's not afraid to talk about less happy subjects such as the importance of having will, power of attorney, inheritance tax etc.

I'm fairly financially astute now and the starting point years ago was Martin and MSE. He's great. I hope he doesn't get any kind of Messiah complex with all the praise he receives because that would turn me, and others, I'm sure, right off him. And it's important that people keep watching him and engaging with MSE because there is no-one else doing what he's doing.

The MSE team are also quick to remove outdated information on their website. I emailed them recently because one of their best buy fixed saving accounts, while appearing to still be available on the bank's website, was not available when you clicked through to apply. The MSE staff who emailed me back thanked me for notifying them about that, and it was removed from the website immediately. They said they rely on their readers letting them know when information goes out of date, as it goes out of date so quickly!

Yes. I think he has a lot of good advice but his style isn’t for me.

This sums him up perfectly for me-I could never watch his tv show, but he does have sound advice via the website

They sure do.

I think he’ stepped his game up during lockdown and recently. Mainly because of the important issues that have to be addressed. Before that I found his approach deliberately confusing for consumers and he would make very simple things sound more complicated than they are.

I know he’s the ‘money saving expert’ but he also encourages a lot of people to spend money, switch accounts or transact in some way. This is all done through his site which earns him even more money through affiliate links.

but some people seem to like it so he’s just going to continue doing it.

That's unfair. He, and MSE, regularly reminds people that the "deals" MSE highlights about saving money-saving stuff like BOGOFs or "spend x much and you'll get y discount", or "open this bank account and you'll get that cashback" that it's only a bargain if you were planning on buying or doing it anyway.

I like Martin Lewis, I think he is a decent guy. Yes it’s his job, but he has helped so many people over the years.

However I get what you’re saying as I felt the same about that female doctor who turned up a lot during the Covid lockdown, she has red hair? She was so annoying and she suddenly seemed to be a ‘celebrity’ doctor. Apparently she was useless as a GP at the time her patients said. She seemed to massively benefit from the Covid crisis and some of the things she said sounded like she wanted it all to continue. Lots of people called her out via socials but she just doubled down. Thankfully she seems to have buggered off, to the point where I have forgotten her name.

So maybe you feel about ML as I do about doctor lady.

Is that not the one that died suddenly?

I hate the way everything is so rushed on his show with no depth

How can you have depth when the topics can get so complicated and circumstances vary so much between people? He tries to give a handy overview to people and highlight things that they may not have thought of themselves, so that it makes them go off and research it further. That can only be a good thing.

Nameychango · 09/01/2024 22:47

I think he's great, helps a lot of people and campaigns tirelessly for us all. The PPE etc etc among a load of other stuff, even challenging the chancellor of the exchequer! He's about the only person I trust for financial advice

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 09/01/2024 22:52

I think he is great

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 09/01/2024 23:09

Me too.

LordyMe · 09/01/2024 23:26

I think he is genuine, kind AND intelligent. I really wish he would stand for election. He says he isn't a politician but he is clever enough to run the government and to take advice on political matters. Imagine having someone running the country who is honest and who truly wants what is best for people.

He has a bit of an annoying manner but i don't care about that. I'd much rather listen to someone I can trust than someone who was smooth but out for themselves.

GeneCity · 10/01/2024 07:03

I think I've already posted on this thread, but Martin has campaigned tirelessly on so many issues in the UK. He's brilliant and selfless, and has helped a massive proportion of the population.

I like him but bloody hell he speaks so fast that even text captions struggle to keep up with him!

This ^
I don’t watch him because he gabbles. Drives me nuts. The co presenter I last saw him with was superfluous and added nothing which also annoyed me but I’ve not watched him for yonks so maybe the format has changed?

Im content with his emails, not that he’s ever saved me any money, but I’m pleased for those that do.

Im on the fence. I like where he’s coming from but not his style on tv.

Shortkiwi · 10/01/2024 11:11

He’s brilliant. Saved us thousands on council tax. Also got a tax rebate thanks to him when I had student status whilst employed.

I totally agree. The woman you’re talking about is Sarah Jarvis. She talked about putting her shopping in the garage to isolate it. She cuddled her poor old dad through a plastic shield. Thank god we don’t see her much anymore.

Martin Lewis, one of the most trusted people in Britain, applied to join the House of Lords. (You can do this, it seems). Despite welcoming the likes of Philip Green, Michelle Mone and Bozo's young blonde about whom we know nothing, ML was rejected. He's so busy that whoever decides yeas and nays said ML wouldn't be able to give it enough time. Establishment stitch up seems to be the order of the day. As usual.
