Does anyone else find Martin Lewis annoying?

Or is it just me?

All the clickbait warnings earn him money - don't they?

I am happy to be told I'm cynical but I work in marketing and he's very much an influencer. Just an influencer with a different tone and agenda.

Anyway, happy to be told I'm cynical 😊

Wash your mouth out.

I've been an MSEr for over 15 years.

He's a millionaire, yet he still works tirelessly for everyone trying to campaign for better deals, informs the public about different things like the farce of student loans and has set up a few charities to support local groups financially with money education and mental health. He does all these things in layman's terms rather than money speak.

He's had to take a different spin recently with the cost of living crisis, but he's got the ears of some in government and he makes sure he knows his stuff.

I cannot say a bad word about the man.

mansviewpoint · 01/10/2022 12:25

I think it's unreasonable to be so annoyed that you have to post it on the internet... But yes, Martin Lewis is stating the bleeding obvious to the niave which is frustrating but you have to remember he has to preach to the masses, so it's not about you, it's about them. Their inability to finance / budget or even understand interest rates.

FleeUpFreeTime · 01/10/2022 12:29

His advice is fine but for me it’s his sulky I’m cross with government / suppliers face that he does a lot that pisses me me off. Even worse when he puts himself in amongst us low - middle earners and say We are all going to suffer. He’s not, he’s a multi millionaire.

A person at work is on £140k a year and claimed they will have trouble paying their energy bills, their wife earns about the same - that went down very badly

Blocked · 01/10/2022 12:31

He really helps people. It's hard to know who to trust these days but you can trust his advice. And the money saving expert forum is brilliant and helps people every day too.

mjf981 · 01/10/2022 12:34

At least he's trying to help people and not entirely self serving. Which is better than 99% of others currently in the public eye / influencers / politicians these days.

So a thumbs up from me.

Hugasauras · 01/10/2022 12:35

He also helped to fund a financial basics textbook for teenagers to learn practical economics.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 01/10/2022 12:35

He helps a lot of people so who cares what any of us think.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/10/2022 12:38

He was the one who told me about CAP (which was a lifesaver for me a decade ago). I’ll always be thankful for that, always.

That said, he does sometimes annoy me with his ‘style’.

Moon22 · 01/10/2022 12:38

Oh i love him and trust him! Can't think of anyone who's a better/similar alternative.

Handsnotwands · 01/10/2022 12:42

He’s knowledgeable, passionate and on the side of your average person

i don’t read the DM or watch daytime tv so I’ve not been subjected to his “public persona” but I rely heavily on his website for advice about financial decisions

I think he’s one of the good ones

clowerina · 01/10/2022 12:44

disagree entirely OP. He's on the people's side. What some call "fear mongering" is just highlighting reality these days with the awful tory party. And an important job that needs doing.

I think the tories are trying to smear him, I strongly suspect they have set their trolls into boards like mumsnet, reddit etc and comments boards just to try to drag his name through mud because he's highlighting their incompetence. (note OP I'm not suggesting you are one of these).

okytdvhuoo · 01/10/2022 12:45

I love him. A force for good imo

MiddleParking · 01/10/2022 12:46

You’re nice and it costs nothing to be kind so you’re posting on a huge forum about how you find a genuinely good person annoying for no reason other than that they get paid for their job? You’re not kind or nice, you are in fact pretty unpleasant.

EgonsShell · 01/10/2022 12:46

He may well be annoying in his delivery or just an "influencer" but surely you can see the positive impact his "influencing" has had on millions of people, not just during the energy crisis but in how people organise their finances (and claim back PPI, bank charges etc).

Also gives millions of his wealth away to good causes. He also fully acknowledges his position of privilege!

What an odd post.

MarshaBradyo · 01/10/2022 12:47

I find him irritating but I can see people love him so I just try to avoid him

diamondpony80 · 01/10/2022 12:47

He’s helping people and making money doing it. A great way to do business IMHO.

Jackienory · 01/10/2022 12:49

Yes, totally.

PuppyMonkey · 01/10/2022 12:50

I think he’s so knowledgeable and so good at his job, it probably could come across as “smugness” to some. But tbh if he’s on the telly, you listen and you know what he says will be accurate. I don’t see how you can quibble with that.

Threadkillacilla · 01/10/2022 12:55

An absolute force for good.
just about everything he does helps someone, we need 100 more like him and we might see things improve.

AceofPentacles · 01/10/2022 12:56

I've always thought he's a cock, then when he started saying he was advising the chancellor I thought he'd totally disappeared up his own bumhole

PeekAtYou · 01/10/2022 13:00

I don't like watching him on TV but he's done more for UK financial literacy than any MP or newspaper that I know which is worthy of an MBE or similar imo

Dacadactyl · 01/10/2022 13:06

I know...some people think of him as a national treasure but he has wound me up for YEARS. I don't mind his advice but his delivery gets my goat. And don't get me started on Clare Balding....

PeekAtYou · 01/10/2022 13:07

I don't think that all influencers should be tarred with the same brush. He's not using his kids to score free stuff or using filters to create thirst traps 😂
I think that people can benefit from his advice eg to send a meter reading yesterday so you pay yesterday's rate for fuel and also pointing out that the PM fucked up when she mentioned £2.5k fuel bills would be the max paid.

AisforApplePie · 01/10/2022 13:10

I like Martin Lewis, I think he is a decent guy. Yes it’s his job, but he has helped so many people over the years.

However I get what you’re saying as I felt the same about that female doctor who turned up a lot during the Covid lockdown, she has red hair? She was so annoying and she suddenly seemed to be a ‘celebrity’ doctor. Apparently she was useless as a GP at the time her patients said. She seemed to massively benefit from the Covid crisis and some of the things she said sounded like she wanted it all to continue. Lots of people called her out via socials but she just doubled down. Thankfully she seems to have buggered off, to the point where I have forgotten her name.

So maybe you feel about ML as I do about doctor lady.

TheSimpleLife88 · 01/10/2022 13:11

I think he is brilliant. He seems honest, wants to help people and has saved people like me so much money. He works really hard yet also prioritises his mental health and family life when he must. He's an excellent role model.
So what if he's made a fortune out of what he does - so have lots of other people, but they don't do as much for the general population as he does.
If you can't tell already - big Martin Lewis fan!
