Does anyone else find Martin Lewis annoying?

Or is it just me?

All the clickbait warnings earn him money - don't they?

I am happy to be told I'm cynical but I work in marketing and he's very much an influencer. Just an influencer with a different tone and agenda.

Anyway, happy to be told I'm cynical 😊

I hate the way everything is so rushed on his show with no depth

woodhill · 01/10/2022 14:36

But his site is very good to be fair

user16480478 · 01/10/2022 14:37

His style is a bit irritating but I think he is just a bit hyperactive, he has to talk very fast though as there always seems to be time constraints

I'm not sure I'd see a man worth £123 million taking his family on a "nightmare" budget flight and feel impressed about it....

I respect people that practise what they preach. I also respect multi millionaires who reduce their carbon footprint by taking an uncomfortable and inconvenient flight rather than jumping on a private jet, which is what most of them seem to do (while simultaneously banging on about the environment.)

I applied several times for a PPI refund and each time it was rejected even though I knew I’d had one. Finally a friend recommended ML’s advice which I followed and lo and behold I finally got my refund. So for me ML is a legend and I’ve no idea if he’s annoying or not as I only read his advice but he’s alright in my books!

I think he's brilliant. He's saved so many people so much money. He really is on the side of ordinary people, unlike so many MPs.

Yep this

Blueberrycreampie · 01/10/2022 14:54

We really do need someone like Martin Lewis to fight our corner. I know he's a very very rich man and he could give up all the campaigning he does tomorrow but who else is going to take his place? I do believe he really cares and probably the people who find him most annoying are those who are trying to squeeze those on benefits and on low incomes.

I find him irritating but I can see people love him so I just try to avoid him

Why would you avoid someone who could help you? His actions have saved people significant amounts of money and he continues to petition the government.

All the clickbait warnings earn him money - don't they?

They sure do.

I think he’ stepped his game up during lockdown and recently. Mainly because of the important issues that have to be addressed. Before that I found his approach deliberately confusing for consumers and he would make very simple things sound more complicated than they are.

I know he’s the ‘money saving expert’ but he also encourages a lot of people to spend money, switch accounts or transact in some way. This is all done through his site which earns him even more money through affiliate links.

but some people seem to like it so he’s just going to continue doing it.

That is simply not true. He does earn some money from links from his website but I have switched accounts countless times and always done it directly so nobody has earned anything (apart from me). He highlights those companies which benefit the site, so is at least transparent about it.

Martin's advice has been really good and he campaigns tirelessly for people to become better informed. When he sold his website and made his fortune, he paid for every secondary school to have a copy of his book, which was written for teens. He paid for mental health advisers to be put into Citizens Advice Bureaux as he recognises the huge correlation between poor mental health and debt.

Knock him if you want to, but I refuse to be part of it. His advice is written such that most people can understand it. His team trawl through loads of accounts, offers and deals so that they recommend only the best ones, which saves people like me hours of research. His explanation of student loans is the one we choose to send out to our students & their parents. But people are still moaning.

AchillesLastStand · 01/10/2022 15:03

A recent poll showed that’s he’s the most popular person with the British public to be PM. He was tweeting about it the other day. He’d never be able to do it because he said he values his mental health and the pressure it would put on his family but was flattered. So he seems very popular.

I think the criticism about him being hysterical about energy bills is very unfair. He had to get the government to act or people would ended up dying and there would have been devastating economic impacts too. If the government had let them keep going up it would have potentially been worse than Covid.

Expectnothing · 01/10/2022 15:05

Thanks everyone for replying! I totally stand corrected. I've learnt a huge amount from this thread. 😊

All the people saying he makes money from his website - you do know he sold it 10 years ago?

He's very hyper, but he does a bloody good job, can't fault him. Am I the only one that worries a bit about him? He seems to take everything to heart and throws himself so full in there. I can imagine him being a bit obsessive.

custardbear · 01/10/2022 15:10

He's amazing, I'd rather have someone rubbish at comms but knows his stuff all day long.
I wondered if he was slightly on the spectrum ... but aren't we all!
He's awesome 🤩

FlippertyGibberts · 01/10/2022 15:44

I think he's great. He's informed and intelligent, and he tries to hold the government to account. Who else does that? He also funded a finance textbook for all kids in the UK.

Kite22 · 01/10/2022 15:49

The vast majority of his site is to encourage you to spend on stuff you wouldn't have thought of if you hadn't been told it was a bargain.

This is simply not true.
The vast majority of the site is there to help people make the most out of their money, sort out their debt, or understand things to do with finance they haven't previously understood.
I don't know what you've read, but it isn't what anyone else is seeing there.

Croque · 01/10/2022 15:55

It is a bit unfair to categorise him with influencers as he has relevant qualifications to advise about money. I'm not sure why a PP implied that he earns no money from his work. He is LOADED as a result of it but he is arguably more deserving of it than many other bubblegum influencers standing around in bikinis on tropical islands with their cute designer dogs. I'm not sure whether a lot of his advice is all that great. The last thing I got was an organic shampoo bar via his link and it is tiny. That said, I have a lot more hair than him so he may have recommended it based on his average usage! He made a hash of the bill fixing advice but since Truss has monumentally screwed up since then, it will probably be forgiven and forgotten really soon

Croque · 01/10/2022 15:56

Mostly, i admire him for making the most of his life despite having lost his mom in tragic circumstances by which he is still visibly deeply wounded many years on.

FrownedUpon · 01/10/2022 16:02

He is annoying. He always seems really hyper & his presentation style just stresses me out.

lannistunut · 01/10/2022 16:05

Exasperatednow · 01/10/2022 12:10

At least he's trying to help people. It's more than the government is.

Quite. I think a lot of Tories dislike him for educating the plebs.

BogStandard · 01/10/2022 16:05

He's a pain in the arse, I turn over when he comes on.

PreferAnimals · 01/10/2022 16:13

I feel exactly the same. I sometimes wonder if he really is in it for "the people" or if he's a puppet and someone else is pulling the strings. The clickbait and advertising just serves to make me even more suspicious. I don't think he's a bad dishonest person - I just feel like hes on some mad marketing gravy train and I got off a while back. Each to their own though, some think he's the holy grail and that's all good 👍

BringMeTea · 01/10/2022 16:14

He is an excellent person. A very good egg.

Teenyliving · 01/10/2022 16:19

I find him personally annoying but I think he is very much genuine in his concern for ordinary people

he shows that wealthy and successful people don’t actually have to be arseholes

Somanysocks · 01/10/2022 16:19

The only thing I have against him is that he makes me panic that I'm not doing all I should to save money, which I guess is his objective.
