Does anyone else find Martin Lewis annoying?

Or is it just me?

All the clickbait warnings earn him money - don't they?

I am happy to be told I'm cynical but I work in marketing and he's very much an influencer. Just an influencer with a different tone and agenda.

Anyway, happy to be told I'm cynical 😊

Like the ethos (have been an MSEr for at least fifteen years) but am disliking the television personality more these days, he's getting too hyper and screechy. I always want to tell him to 'calm down'

Quite sure the folk that have barely got a pot to piss in just now would rather he didn't calm down.

SarahShorty · 02/10/2022 17:52

Yes. He's always been annoying.

SarahShorty · 02/10/2022 17:56

Also some of his advice is rubbish. He compared Premium Bonds to lottery tickets and urged people to invest in Icesave, an Icelandic bank which later went bust.

lickenchugget · 02/10/2022 17:57

Yep. I can’t watch him, smug smug smug.

GlassDeli · 02/10/2022 17:58

I'm not that keen on his presentation style, but he seems to have helped a lot of people with his advice. He is still nowhere near being the most annoying person in the public eye. (Eddie Izzard, surely?)

newnamethanks · 02/10/2022 18:01

No. He is a god. Which is handy as the real thing is coming up short in all kinds of ways these days.

Feelingmehmehmeh · 11/01/2023 06:08

That man is a god. I don’t always listen as intently now as a lot that he says I’ve learned for myself over the years but he is a good person doing good things for people. No ulterior motives as far as I’m concerned.

Have hated him since he popped up with get your bank charges refunded. A truly ghastly and stressful time we had in work.

SpaceRaiders · 11/01/2023 06:25

I don’t think the criticism here is fair. He does the world of good helping people through crises that the government otherwise should.

If you follow him on Twitter he often alludes to struggling with poor mental health. I definitely pick up neurodivergent vibes off him, he’s so passionate about what he does and going by how fast he speaks without pausing for breath, it wouldn’t surprise me.

hadenoughforever · 11/01/2023 12:01

I haven’t read the thread so it might have already been mentioned but he needs to sloooooooow down when speaking. Even the subtitles have trouble keeping up with him (and I depend on these) and hence find it difficult to absorb what he is saying. I think what he does is good and v worthwhile work though.

HenryVlll1509 · 06/11/2023 04:16

I think he spouts to much crap

MyCircumference · 06/11/2023 04:32

i wouldnt watch his tv programme, i think i get his martin's money emails and that is good
his advice is good
he is best in small doses

newnamethanks · 06/11/2023 05:17

No I don't. If I did, I wouldn't listen to him. That's an option for you too OP. He is one of the few good people in a world going inncreasingly mad. Leave it out.

Codlingmoths · 06/11/2023 05:23

I think anyone who wants to have a go should first take some significant steps to contribute to helping those less well off and then also give a large sum to charity, and by the time they’ve done those things they’d probably realise the value and effort in people who genuinely give so much effort to help others and pull their head in. I’m not meaning the op who didn’t even need to take those steps to pull her head in, credit for the rethink op.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 06/11/2023 06:05

I think his message to us all is really helpful. I get his weekly newsletter and have used several of his suggestions over the last year.

Id heard that he was very generous to the CAB, and other charities.

He’s a good egg.

However, I just can’t watch him on tv. I start hyperventilating and panicking!

Loubelle70 · 06/11/2023 06:07

Georgeskitchen · 01/10/2022 11:54

I used to watch his show but he seems to be a parody of himself now, the fast breathless shouting and the arm waving is too much now. He seems to enjoy scaremongering a little too much as well. I don't watch anymore

Bang on right!

mushroomsinplantpots · 06/11/2023 07:34

I work in marketing too OP so I understand how this can make you feel a bit jaded. ML absolutely is an 'influencer' and I would imagine is nothing like that persona IRL.

He's obviously done well out of it too, but I would say that (unlike many other influencers), he's using his profile to help people so that can only be a good thing. It sounds like he donates a lot of money too and although I don't like it when celebs announce big donations, he isn't keeping it all to himself.

As for the website, well it drives me nuts! It's a blaze of confusion and pop-ups which hurt my eyes but again, I'm sure it's been a massive help and support to so many people who were at the end of their tether!

So I see it for what it is but I can also see the great good that's happening as a result. :)

BitOutOfPractice · 06/11/2023 07:48

I wonder if the people saying he has personally benefited from bad advice can prove that. They did not seem to realise that he sold the website many years ago.

the website isn’t very beautiful. It prioritises information over style. Bit like ML himself.

I like him. He seems like one of life’s good guys. And he has real influence with the government I think.

as for the person saying they hate him because his work on refunding bank charges made their job stressful. Oh, shame.

Mxflamingnoravera · 06/11/2023 08:26

He used to be a stand up comedian and his style has pretty much stayed the same. He is doing great work in helping financial literacy and believes that we should all be prepared to talk about money. Given that a recent survey said a large percentage of married couples don't talk about money, I think he is doing a great job and if his style is appealing to those who need to hear his messages then he is doing great.

saraclara · 06/11/2023 09:11

The only thing I can find to criticise is that he talks too fast.

He has done more for the people of this country, financially, than anyone, and we should all be enormously grateful to him. As a pp unwittingly made clear, without him the banks would be fleecing us, because it's too much work for them to inform us of our rights and deal with giving us the money back that they owe us.
And that's just one area where he's saved us money. His campaigning will have been behind the government support with fuel costs and rights for those with pay as you go meters.

Even if you haven't consciously followed his advice, his campaigning will have brought money into your home that you wouldn't otherwise have had.

I like that he's also open about his mental health issues.

Angieeeee · 09/01/2024 21:48

Yes Martin Lewis does annoy me. Thinks he’s the money god

Angieeeee · 09/01/2024 21:50

Does anyone agree? Tesco fruit is awful tasteless and their bananas are soft and black when opened
can’t beat the green grocers

Jellykat · 09/01/2024 21:58

Watching him atm, he does talk fast but just given corking advice which relates to a question ive personally been wondering.

Great real life advice and answers for us 'little people', that you'd have a job to find elsewhere.. i think he's great.

ScribblingPixie · 09/01/2024 22:03

I got three grand on a missold productbecause of his advice - at a time when I was totally skint. I remember doing a little dance when I got the letter. I don't give a stuff about his presenting style.

TempleOfBloom · 09/01/2024 22:04

You can’t see the difference between someone with a huge following who parades about posing all day and someone with a huge following because he saves people a lot of money, busts scams, takes the gvt and big corporations to task and cares about people much less rich than him?

He can annoy me as much as he likes, he saved me tax with a detail that my FA didn’t know about.
