For the same reason as noses run and feet smell. For the poor humble sock scarred by shoe life, its not surprising that feet and socks want to get as far away as possible from each other.

How can we prevent sock loss and sadness of having a pile of orphaned socks in a variety of colours lengths and stages of life?

Give all socks a basic income, careers counselling, train them in map reading skills, the phonetic alphabet, give them a support animal, shoe deodorant & a roast chicken.
If socks are vegetarian then they can have a dozen eggs & if socks are vegan they can have a dozen of Greggs Vegan sausage rolls

Finally give them a voucher for free laundry bags &/or clips available from Lakeland, B&M, M&S, Aldi, Sainsbury's, Waitrose & Liberty.

Clams, snails and scallops are the most selfish shellfish as they won't share their homes with anybody under any circumstance. Forget it if you are a relative and ask them to stay cos you find yourself homeless. They will leave you to fossilise rather than take you in.
