Thirty six years ago today this woman woke to find her dead husband alive and having a shower!

Hands down best programme of the 1980s, IMO, was Cagney and Lacey.

Here’s a treat for y’all

m.youtube.com/watch?v=8sKX3tWaOew

Listening to that has reminded me that we sung lyrics to it at school
"He's big, he's rich, his wife is a bitch, and he drives a big yellow (?) car, he lives in a palace in the middle of Dallas, and his nickname is JR"

I wanted Neighbours to end with "it was all a dream" Grin I was disappointed.

Cheesybread222 · 28/09/2022 10:33

Dallas had everything.
Sue Ellen the drunk
JR the evil brother
Charlene the poison dwarf

Bobby the good brother.
Cliff Barnes Jr's nemesis.

And a well stocked bar, what more could you ask for🍷

I was too young for it, but did any of you watch Eldorado?

I've been listening to the Sounds of the 90s radio show (each episode covers a year and get clips from the news, songs, film trailers etc) and it was mentioned and I'm really surprised it didn't take off. Was it really that bad?

kittykarate · 28/09/2022 10:56

I watched Eldorado - it wasn't that bad.. but unfortunately it was in that weird middle ground where it was neither good enough to succeed or bad enough to be cult.

Some of the acting was a bit shoddy, but no different than in any soap.

Plantstrees · 28/09/2022 11:01

Wow, can't believe it has been 36 years! The days when everyone watched the same TV programme and discussed it at work the next day.

JudgeJ · 28/09/2022 11:01

Jenasaurus · 28/09/2022 02:09

I still can't remember who shot JR either

Lee Harvey Oswald, according to one TV quiz contestant!

dudsville · 28/09/2022 11:04

36 years ago? Wow, that was such a shocking moment, talk about a tv moment that most people discussed!

JudgeJ · 28/09/2022 11:05

Hearthnhome · 28/09/2022 02:12

That’s so weird I was trying to explain this story line to ds the other day after he declared the stories that end with ‘it was all a dream’ are pointless.

I remember my mum being throughly cheesed off at this 😂

Wasn't she in a relationship with some gorgeous guy who had gone off to search for emeralds in South America and was missing, which was a covenient plot trick to get Bobby out of the shower? He must have had some very puckered skin after all that time! Wouldn't happen these days, who can afford such a long shower???

JudgeJ · 28/09/2022 11:07

FindingMarbles · 28/09/2022 07:41

I've always wondered if this was a complete surprise to the people that watched in... or did you get a heads up via the press that Bobby was coming back? I think this is the only scene I've ever seen from Dallas - must have been reshown in one of those "tvs best moments" threads! It looks crazy!

I think it was mentioned in the papers but no-one thought they would do something so stupid!

CannibalQueen · 28/09/2022 11:13

Oh you poor young thing. This was the famous Dallas shower scene - we'd had an entire, and I mean ENTIRE season of Bobby Ewing being dead and Pamela Ewing (his wife) having to cope with his toxic family etc. And then at the end, they made her 'wake up' from a sleep to find Bobby in the shower and the whole season had just been 'a dream;. Nearly caused riots.

I watched Eldorado and I liked it. I know I was in a minority though.

Whoactuallythinksthat · 28/09/2022 12:12

Aah, Dallas on a Wednesday evening. My parents, my brother, the cat and a big box of Terry’s All Gold!
And Dynasty to look forward to on Friday!

KimberleyClark · 28/09/2022 12:15

US television was a real novelty in the late 70s/80s, the picture was so much clearer and brighter and all that sunshine and blue sky.

MrsTumblebee · 28/09/2022 12:23

Does anyone remember Peyton Place? It was considered very racy television in its day. It was really good and the first grown up tv show my mum let me watch.

Georgeskitchen · 28/09/2022 12:50

Eldorado was just starting to pick up when it was axed. Shame really it could have developed into a watchable soap.
Talking of dream sequences does anyone remember when Crossroads was resurrected with a posh woman as the managing director? Can't remember how long it ran for (not long iirc) before being axed again🤣
At the end of the last episode it turned out the posh lady owner was actually a downbeat checkout operator in a supermarket on a downbeat council estate
Absolute genius ending!!

Trinity65 · 28/09/2022 12:52

I adored Dallas
And Knots Landing and Dynasty
My favourite was a mockery of them called Soap

They don't make them like that anymore

Completely agree
I was just getting into Eldorado when WHAM. It was no more.
It was the same with Albion Market.

Hands up! With a very young Mia Farrow, it was so hard to follow plot lines when everything was in black and white on a very small screen, well that’s my excuse, I think it was a rich boy meets girl from wrong side of the tracks , but then that’s pretty much the plot for most US soaps.

Georgeskitchen · 28/09/2022 13:00

@Trinity65 yes Albion Market was starting to grow on me as well!!
I was a SAHM when some of these programmes were showing , Sons and daughters, Families, Shortland Street!!
When my son was about 2/3years old, he used to sing all the theme tunes😍🤣🤣

HopeMumsnet · 28/09/2022 13:09

Hi there,
We tweaked the title a tiny bit cos it was coming up rather baldly on the side panels...

schnubbins · 28/09/2022 13:14

I wasn't allowed to watch Dallas when it started (sordid stuff). My mum was always in a mad rush to get me off to bed and it was only when I was packed off upstairs and heard the intro music that I realised what was going on.I got the full rundown of it when I went to school the next day every outfit was described in great detail .

@MichelleScarn I have very fond memories of being home and watching Sons and Daughters and eating tomato soup. Maybe I was ill and off school or summer holidays? Felt like a midday sort of show. We also used to record Neighbours when it was on early afternoon before it became popular and moved to an early evening slot.

My sister and I watched Prisoner Cell Block H on a small 14 inch portable tv in our room. Never forget hearing Vinegar Tits as an insult for the first time, we were howling with laughter.

Loved all the Dallas and Dynasty stuff, felt like a million miles from our home life. Could not believe it when Bobby came back to life.

Does everyone else remember the words to theme tunes from your childhood? Obviously with Dallas, epic theme tune, we just used to sing dur dur durrr etc. It's all coming back, Chips, Dukes of Hazard, Fall Guy, Midnight Caller, Knightrider brilliant tv.

Brings back memories from my childhood.

I remember reading the novel as a teen but never saw the tv show.

Luminousnose · 28/09/2022 13:37

Didn’t Terry Wogan used to refer to Lucy Ewing as The Poison Dwarf? 😆
Yes, and Sue-Ellen was ‘Quiver Lips”.

I dimly remember Peyton Place (my parents watched it). Young Mia Farrow and Ryan O’Neal I think.
