Not the stairs
Yes, I agree totally. Unethical.
It was a blatant smash and grab.
Putting off the vote might help a bit , but her reputation today has been soiled.
If her speech is poorly received too, it could be game over sooner than we think. Depends how tenacious she is and if she can win people round a bit

L1ttledrummergirl · 02/10/2022 23:09

Lonelycrab · 02/10/2022 22:05

I feel a bit sorry for her sometimes

🍿yeah me too.

Take a walk through your hospital a&e department, specifically the majors and take a look at the number of people on trolleys in corridors, and the back of ambulances.
I suspect your pity will evaporate very quickly. After today I'm even more angry with them and the back door asset stripping that's left the nhs in the appalling state it is currently.

Disclaimer, I think the staff are amazing and bloody miracle workers.

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2022 23:21

I know, I just feel that people in the public eye have it tough with trolls and horrible comments etc. I agree that the country's in a mess and I hate their policies and the NHS is failing, the staff do work hard , but it must be like fighting fire with fire :(

L1ttledrummergirl · 02/10/2022 23:49

Random thought.
If so many conservatives rebel and have the whip withdrawn and/or cross the floor, what happens if Labour by default become the largest party? Would this force a general election or would Parliament be dissolved and reopened with Labour as the party in charge?
Surely the conservatives couldn't remain in charge as a minority government? Would there have to be a vote of no confidence?

It's late, I'm tired and don't fancy going down the rabbit hole right now so if anyone can help me in my laziness that would be fab.

I'm increasingly worried that Truss, remembering that Thatcher got quite a popularity boost by going to war against Argentina, will attempt something similar with Russia.

the80sweregreat · 03/10/2022 03:41

We haven't got the money to start a war.
She would be really mad to try this.
I read online that she might u turning on the vote to remove the 45p threshold.

DowningStreetParty · 03/10/2022 05:11

OMG that Nadine Dorries tweet. She is delusional. Boris Johnson is not ‘loyal’ to a fault. Ask any of his wives, sidechicks or kids. He demanded loyalty to a fault though. The savage purge he made in 2019 of moderate and experienced MPs who were remainers or MPs who just wanted the madness of Brexit to be done as legally correctly and least harmfully as possible, is what has paved the way for all this shit.

Truss and Kwarteng are the ultimate conclusion of Boris Johnson stocking his cabinet with extreme yes-people, who made the career move of becoming hard Brexiteers. In such self serving and corrupting times, where loyalty is ranked above competence, of course you get extremists who don’t care about real world damage they cause, like Truss. This is the Johnsonian culture that she’s been shaped by. She’s Johnson’s political heir, even though he would probably deny it (for which he would have form..)

Cornettoninja · 03/10/2022 07:08

And what comes after ‘T’ …..

They’ve exposed themselves.

TokyoSushi · 03/10/2022 07:09

Ah, top rate of tax is now staying, panic is setting in. Still think she's toast though. If she couldn't see that was an utter disaster in the making, then it won't be long until the next blunder.

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2022 22:15

It feels like the writing is on the wall now !
The conservatives are ruthless.
Damage limitation
My only worry is who will we get next ?

Are they really that ruthless?
They kept Johnson on for ages after he had lied to parliament.

Saucery · 03/10/2022 07:15

They will weigh up how many votes potentially lost by keeping her as PM with her batshit budget vs votes potentially lost by swapping PMs more often than the average MNer changes their bedding.
If the scales come down against the former then she is out.

Cornettoninja · 03/10/2022 07:24

I’m not convinced the markets will be reassured by the u-turn. Truss’s cabinet is too new to shoulder it, they’ve had no time to build any sort of record to trust (or not).

Notonthestairs · 03/10/2022 07:27

Chris Philp made me do it!!

Tory insiders claim that it was, in fact, Treasury chief sec Chris Philp who had the idea to cut the 45p tax rate, presenting Truss and Kwarteng with a paper on it during leadership campaign.

That's what I think.

I believe they kept Johnson despite his lies until it became clear he was no longer a vote winner.

The sexual assault accusations was too much for the public. It wasn't him but it was someone he had in a high up position.

Truss is proving to be worse vote wise. That's what counts to them. That's why what happens next will be interesting.

ClaudineClare · 03/10/2022 07:41

Oh, I love the smell of a screeching u-turn in the morning. What a bunch of nimcompoops. I also love that they are turning on each other already miss, it wasn't me, he made me do it.

DowningStreetParty · 03/10/2022 07:55

haha Grin

Notonthestairs · 03/10/2022 07:59

Well at least we won't have to hear any Thatcher styled nonsense about this Lady is not for turning.

Not a great start to conference.

DuncinToffee · 03/10/2022 08:04

Are they blaming this in 'miscommunication? Confused

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/10/2022 08:06

I'm sorry but wtaf!
They've fucked the country over, spent £65 billion, increased the interest rates of mortgages, caused major worries around the country and for what?

How fucking dare they. It is not a game!

Maybe now they can u-turn on bankers bonuses and taxing the energy companies, rather than borrowing more fucking money and plunging the country into a downward trajectory.

They are disgraceful. The sooner they fuck off the better

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/10/2022 08:11

And what happens to those who made money from shorting the pound?
To make such sweeping changes without advice was stupid. To insist you are right causing untold damage smacks of idiocy and then to not have the courage to own those changes after such a long period of time is cowardice and shows a lack of listening

Listening would have been taking the advice first. Listening would have involved a u- turn on day 1. This is the opposite and is saving their own skin.

"They've fucked the country over, spent £65 billion, increased the interest rates of mortgages, caused major worries around the country and for what?"

^^ that sums up my thinking too.
This whole exercise has been insanely expensive, they've increased market volatility, cost mortgage payers (and applicants) money whilst also making the country look unstable.
And for what? Sending a signal to the IEA etc.

AchillesLastStand · 03/10/2022 08:27

It’s all falling apart isn’t it?!

Every post on here should start with, at the time of writing Liz Truss is still PM….

Notonthestairs · 03/10/2022 08:34

Interesting to see some businesses moving their donations -
A multimillionaire Conservative donor has defected to Labour, giving the party £100,000 and promising more to come.
Gareth Quarry, 63, said that Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng were “zealots” following a policy of “GCSE economics” whereas Sir Keir Starmer and his team were “sensible people who have got their feet on the ground”.

There is a thread on the u-turn. The desperation of the Tory supporters and bots is a sight to behold.
