Hopefully I've done this so it works.

I wonder though if even that would get through?

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 14:50

I would love the rebel MPs to grow a backbone and start working for the people instead of the party. My MP will be cheering her on, but they are not all like he is.
It's normally party first , so I doubt anything will happen.

Mines removed her head from Johnson's backside and placed it up Truss'.

You've no hope of her thinking there is anything wrong with cutting taxes (mostly) for the rich and cutting public services for those who can't afford them privately to pay the interest on those tax cuts.

itsgettingweird · 01/10/2022 15:34

Sorry to say to pay the interest on the extra borrowing due to those tax cuts.

mibbelucieachwell · 01/10/2022 15:58

My two fears are that the current leadership will be saved from a vote of no confidence by the pressure yet another leadership contest would put on the Conservative party to hold an early election and in two years when our economy is starting to grow again they'll get voted back in as a minority government. SNP will get 45ish seats and the Lib Dems will get more seats.

Many of the usual conservative voters will be so grateful that things appear to be on the up that they'll vote con again. They'll overlook the fact that the figures quoted about the economy won't have any historical context, so they'll look better than they really are.

Or, that Labour will get in but they'll only last one term because the mess they'll have inherited is so massive they can't make enough of a difference in only one term.

But maybe the next few weeks and months will be a wake up call to the people who don't vote to vote Labour and the small C cons will finally be sufficiently angry with this shower to vote them out.

tobee · 01/10/2022 16:22

You would hope that this government are prepared to entertain these philosophies would be enough to convince people not to trust them ever again.

mibbelucieachwell · 01/10/2022 16:35

"Another decade of austerity".

So, 22 years of austerity. By the end of which it will have become normalised.
Great.

itsgettingweird · 01/10/2022 16:44

All I get from reading that is we can't afford,to be a low tax economy and yet we are going to become one.

We will pay less tax but we won't have public services.

They are cutting the 45% rate and having to borrow more to do so also meaning they are needing to cut public services to afford it.

This is why we need a GE. We need to find out if the British people want low tax, massive borrowing and low public spending or not.

And that article is by the person in charge of levelling UP! He's talking about levelling down.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 16:55

A GE won't happen this year. Either the more moderate conservatives decide to have a coup of some kind or there is a vote of no confidence , which I still feel they will win. Most MPs still want a job.
Her cabinet won't resign. They are all on board with it. She won't call one herself
I can't see how anything can change , at the moment anyway.
The devolved governments will whinge a bit but that won't work either. She is ignoring them.
They don't want leveling up at all.

itsgettingweird · 01/10/2022 17:36

I will be interested to see if the more centric Tory's break away and form a new party.

I think there really would be a winner in a return to the One nation Tory politics.

So many hate what the ERG are doing but still feel Labour are too far left (I will vote Starmer as I really think he'll be a great leader and he's not really a complete lefty as they call it!)

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 17:42

A new party might work
Is the reform party the conservatives? I've heard of it , but sounds more like UKIP
I bet most conservatives won't bother doing anything though.

itsgettingweird · 01/10/2022 18:12

I don't know if I'm honest. But I have the same feeling they are very ukip like.

I also think the reason Johnson struggled so much with Starmer as opposition is because essentially economically they are both quite centric. Well - in what they were saying. Johnson always championing levelling up.

Johnson very obviously has very far right views on immigration etc and was quite happy to pay his mates billions for failed contracts. Without covid would he? We will never know.

But the difference between the 2 is that Starmer has morals and is honest. Something Johnson doesn't even aspire to be/have.

He flung all the usual far left, union loving stuff at Starmer to make whatever mud he could stick because he was threatened by him from day dot.

I think Johnson's biggest fear was always Starmer could do what Johnson would say he would do levelling up wise - better than him.

I think listening to both sides and especially those who will never vote Labour because of the far left past a much more centric party would get in hands down.

I'm up for any party that sorts the shit that is our current government and economic situation out! Still really like and respect Starmer though.

DowningStreetParty · 01/10/2022 18:34

Agree that Starmer is looking increasingly statesmanlike and very much PM material whereas Truss and Kwarteng just seem to be desperate to be picked for a midlife rerun of University Challenge.

The Reform Party is right wing - Richard Tice & Farage. They will both be speaking at fringe events of the Conservative Party Conference.

Lonelycrab · 01/10/2022 18:55

2 more years though. Somethings gotta give, I can’t see this lasting. It’s either going to be

Economy imploding
Truss getting ousted
or civil unrest.

Not sure what order they’ll happen in. There’s no way she’s styling it out from here and somehow becoming liked I don’t think.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 19:35

A man on lbc on Thursday said that the 65 bil prop up will not last. I didn't understand it all , but he thinks things will get worse within a week
I hope it settles , but he didn't sound that optimistic.

Notonthestairs · 01/10/2022 19:46

The long read from the Sunday Times is quite interesting.

Hilariously Truss apparently did push to visit Ukraine this week 🙄

Essentially Truss and Kwarteng are committed to following through with their plans. This are looking for £40 billion of cuts. Welfare will be index linked to earnings rather than inflation which saves £5 billion. Another £35 to find...

Hedge funds managers have apparently been egging Kwarteng on and referred to him as a useful idiot.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 20:24

Truss wants a foreign trip already ?
That'll go down well ..not
Private jet I bet

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 20:25

They should scrap HS2.
The benefits bill will get it instead of course :(

Notonthestairs · 01/10/2022 20:59

Andrew Law is a big Tory party donor. Seems like the Chancellor gave his mates an idea about future spending cuts. In attendance were Jake Berry (Tory chair), hedge fund managers and representatives from business connected to healthcare, education & hospitality. Terrible political judgement and dodgy as hell.

Kwasi Kwarteng attended a private champagne reception hours after delivering his mini-budget where hedge fund managers who would gain from a crash in the pound egged him on to commit to his plans.
The chancellor also gave guests insights about forthcoming government spending cuts during the event, which took place at the Chelsea home of Andrew Law, a financier and Conservative Party donor, on the evening of Friday, September 23.
The disclosure raises questions about Kwarteng’s political judgment. It will also raise concern that the event informed his decision to announce plans for even bigger tax cuts despite the market’s negative reaction to his initial plans.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2022 21:02

I hope ( some of ) the media put the screws on the chancellor.
They would if it was Reeves.

Lol - I knew it!

Now what the merry fuck is this?

Notonthestairs · 01/10/2022 21:13

Quite.

Notonthestairs · 01/10/2022 21:15

From the same article

Another said guests explicitly told Kwarteng to “double down” — an approach from which some stood to make enormous profits.
Kwarteng is also said to have warned those present of austerity-style budget cuts to come.
