Inspire me, am considering a potential career change after maternity leave.

What job do you do and do you enjoy it ?

Ambulance care assistant, absolutely love my job, patients are generally lovely and grateful for what we do.
downside is the pay, and being spoken to like rubbish by some ward staff because I dare to do my job properly and not cut corners.

Taught myself to draw, so I draw pet portraits. Love it 😍

champagneplanet no, I don't write my own - I keep saying I will, but I'm too busy . . . a bit like all the people who come to me!

You can earn pretty much what you want depending on how many projects you take on - and I'm lucky to be in the position where I can choose the ones that interest me.

I've done celebs, bloggers, medical memoirs, traumatic stories, abuse survivors, animal memoirs, most things really. I love stories of fascinating women - it's rare for me to work with men. There are often people who want family histories written in a more narrative style too and I enjoy those as the stories would be lost otherwise.

Have you thought of doing NaNoWriMo? That works well for lots of people - good luck!

Crikey @stuffthisstuff.
I haven't heard of NaNoWriMo since my OpenDiary days. I used to do NoJoMo religiously.

GP - not in the UK but in New Zealand.
Semi rural practice.
Days can be long - 10 yrs not unusual and sometimes minimal lunch hours.
Mostly love it -intellectually challenging and I really get a kick out building relationships over many years. I love looking after people as they age - such a privilege! I have conversations about what people want as they near the end life.. because I know them well - some over 15 years then that conversation is easier.
I get a kick out of watching young people grow up too.
Some people are abussive and manipulating-that can be a challenge but as I have gotten older I cope better and often their behaviour in explained by their life story.

I'm a pretty part-time violin teacher and absolutely love it - mainly 1-1 work, littlies to teens. We have a lot of fun and usually I feel really energised after lessons. I'm not great at the admin though. Mostly working after school, though I've three before school this term, and Saturdays. Friends who are more full-time usually work in schools part of the week.

In my ideal world (win the lottery etc) I'd have someone else organising my timetable and payments, I'd just teach my students when they arrived. Actually, with a big lottery win I'd love to start a music centre optimised for private lessons plus concerts and master classes and group sessions etc. I'd definitely be employing administrators though lol!

At the moment I'm looking to restart a previous profession part-time that has the potential to allow me to keep teaching as well. I thrive on variety!

I'm a support worker in a residential care home, we support adults with mental health problems primarily but we can also support those with dementia. Yes I do love it but some days are very hard... been in the care industry for over 4 years now.

I have two jobs both self employed I alternate these jobs one week doing one one week doing the other.

I work with hoarder’s decluttering and organising there homes, work with a long time friend we have done this for about 10 years very hard work but very rewarding when you change how someone lives.

second job is that I am a viewing agent for a solicitors , showing flats and houses for sale. I also butting up the for sale boards. Also do staging of property’s getting them ready for sale.

Declutter Consultant, I've heard it called. I would love to do that as I have the drive for organising people and possessions for a pisitive outcome. Although I realise you likely need to show a lot of understanding and patience.

MinnieMountain · 23/09/2022 06:03

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I bet that’s really interesting (I live on the edge of the Fens).

Do you mind if I ask what the hours per day are like in total !?? Planning teachignetc

60 hours+ a week I was doing as a minimum.

Grissini50 · 23/09/2022 09:32

Academic librarian. I used to love it, now been at the same place for too long. Very flexible though which is what keeps me there. Job is very varied and as someone else said, not at all what people think it is. You need to do a 1 year postgrad. I'm paid quite well as relatively senior but generally pay is not great.

Therealjudgejudy · 23/09/2022 09:56

@Chocoholic1972 ...you are extremely talented 🙂

warofthemonstertrucks · 23/09/2022 10:04

Social care. I manage mental health services. It's impossible and heart breaking. We are Severely underfunded, under staffed, disrespected and ignored by those that are meant to support us, even when service users are in life threatening situations. I've been doing this 20 years and I've never known it so bad.

Avoid anything social care related. It's sadly nowhere near worth your mental and sometimes physical health.

I’ve just left primary and 100% do not recommend it to anyone.

Queenie6655 · 23/09/2022 11:54

I trained for primary in England and moved away

Way too hard

I'm a medical secretary and have been for 16 years. I love it but am starting in a new job on Monday as one of those notoriously hated NHS managers. I'll miss my med sec job.

MuffinFeatures · 23/09/2022 13:19

@BeingATwatItsABingThing do you mind me asking what you’re moving in to? I’m reaching the end of my teaching career but no idea what to do next! Friends say I’m mad to lose the holidays…but those holidays aren’t worth the stress of term time anymore :(

allfurcoatnoknickers · 23/09/2022 14:26

@PopcornAndWine Generally people on here think the charities/foundations should be volunteer run and no one should get paid for working for them...or if we do get paid then it should be minimum wage because you should do it for the love of the job or belief in the mission.

I'm not in a "big money" position, but still bring in at least 30x what I'm paid every year!

As someone who worked for charities for years, massive 🙄 for that viewpoint.... demonstrates total ignorance of what these organisations do and they type of skills/experience needed to run them.

SommerTen · 23/09/2022 16:58

I'm a part time Healthcare Assistant in an NHS hospital.
I actually really like my job.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/09/2022 20:06

@MinnieMountain it is! I love it. It's a good mix of inside/outside, and the feeling that I am doing something useful. I love working with all the different disciplines involved in delivering big schemes - civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, environmental scientists, estates managers, solicitors, quantity surveyors...

I work in the probation service doing a role called a programme facilitator. I’m enjoying it so far. ☺️

Registry administrator at a university mainly responsible for academic misconduct. Love the job but chronic understaffing is placing the whole Registry team under pressure.
