Inspire me, am considering a potential career change after maternity leave.

What job do you do and do you enjoy it ?

An EA… I swing between loving and hating it on the daily.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 22/09/2022 21:14

Special Education Paraeducator in a Middle School (America)
Guess it's the equivalent of a TA working with Years 7, 8 and 9
This is my 23rd year doing it and I love it. I love the kids and cant imagine doing anything else.

EmGB87 · 22/09/2022 21:18

Secondary school science teacher. Mostly love it…especially the holidays as it’s family friendly :)

Flubadubba · 22/09/2022 21:23

Publishing in a field where we publish things that make a difference.

Stuffthisstuff · 22/09/2022 21:23

ColourMeExhausted - I was a journalist before ghostwriting, and a lecturer before that. To be honest, I didn't even know what it was before I started!

MargotChateau · 22/09/2022 21:25

Contemporary artist

MaraScottie · 22/09/2022 21:25

Digital Accessibility Specialist for a tech firm - absolutely love my job.

Stuffthisstuff · 22/09/2022 21:26

FlimFlam2 I was a lecturer then I fell into journalism. I interviewed a woman who asked if I'd write her memoir and it all fell into place from there. It's a great job, fitted in well with kids and parents when they needed me, you can work as much or as little as you like, and clients are fascinating. I genuinely love it!

AnneElliott · 22/09/2022 21:27

I'm a civil servant at one of the big Departments. I run a policy team and I love it.

Eeksteek · 22/09/2022 21:27

Left physio behind to be a SAHM, fell into property, but it’s not what is used to be. About to try my hand at vaccinating children in schools (if I ever get through the recruitment process!) which is lousy pay, but term-time only. If working for someone else doesn’t kill me, I’ll look at something different. I fancy a coding boot camp, but I honestly don’t know if I’ve got it in me to learn a new skill so intensively. Following for ideas….

StealingYourWiFi · 22/09/2022 21:28

Surgical first assistant. Yes I enjoy it, the days are varied!

PollyEsther · 22/09/2022 21:29

Teacher.

Love the job, hate the admin/office politics/fact that it's a government plaything.

Anono34 · 22/09/2022 21:31

Worked as a manager in insurance and loved it, got made redundant in a restructure while on mat leave. Currently SAHM, with mixed feelings about whether I like it or not so about to start looking for something more flexible than insurance 😳

MojoJojo71 · 22/09/2022 21:32

Midwife sonographer. Love my job. Obviously it has its moments when it can be terribly sad and the responsibility can be extremely stressful but overall I can’t think of anything I’d rather do

champagneplanet · 22/09/2022 21:36

Stuffthisstuff · 22/09/2022 19:35

I'm a ghostwriter - I write other people's books for them. I love it ❤️

This is fascinating, i'd love to write a book but my ideas are all over the place.

Do you write your own books too? Is it well paid? What type of books do you write?

Squirrelsquirrel · 22/09/2022 21:37

I've never had a job I loved. 😔
The flexibility of my current one means I'd be daft to change it unless I'm made to. My spidey senses are telling me something is afoot with the company though so who knows.

GrasssInPocket · 22/09/2022 21:40

Freelance translator. Love the flexibility and working from home. Been doing this for many years after working in-house for government and industry.

France98 · 22/09/2022 21:41

I loved my first ever job working a housing association. Great bunch of people and I calculated rents and applied benefits etc, it was a good job.

I then went to an accounting degree and then worked in an accountants for a short while but found it to be ridiculously mind numbing. I then worked in payroll for a bit for my local council. Hated it!

I worked in a school office for a few years as the hours suited my childcare needs. I loved that job but the pay was bloody terrible!

I then did a postgraduate to become a primary teacher.

I love aspects of my job and hate others. I'm considering a change now but I'm not sure as to which direction to go in.

familyissues12345 · 22/09/2022 21:45

I work in the charity sector, specifically with vulnerable children/families. Incredibly rewarding but with lots of responsibility

Okaaaay · 22/09/2022 21:46

@Vampirethriller @cheapskatemum people like you genuinely make me feel happier about the horrible world we live in right now. So so comforting that you love it and will show that in the care you give my child or parent. Thank you

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 22/09/2022 21:46

Sort of ex-primary school teacher. Grew to hate it, sadly. Do a bit of supply, which I also don’t like, but mainly tutor, which is much more enjoyable.

Am building up my art and photography business which I love. Also do some freelance proofreading, copywriting and editing, which I quite enjoy.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 22/09/2022 21:47

Fundraising Director. I am aware that Mumsnet hates my job and thinks that it shouldn't exist, but I generally really enjoy it - get to meet really interesting people, make a difference in the world and no two days are the same.

It can be tough sometimes, I'm on the hook to bring in a lot of money every year to support our programs and if things aren't going well, the stress can be a bit overwhelming.

Lots of people in fundraising are career changers or former SAHPs - a lot of it is personality/life experience based rather than needing specific qualifications.

WhenDovesFly · 22/09/2022 21:48

Funeral Arranger. I love doing my job, it gives me immense satisfaction being able to support families at a very difficult time in their lives. It's not a job you'll get rich at though.

Stuffthisstuff · 22/09/2022 21:50

champagneplanet no, I don't write my own - I keep saying I will, but I'm too busy . . . a bit like all the people who come to me!

You can earn pretty much what you want depending on how many projects you take on - and I'm lucky to be in the position where I can choose the ones that interest me.

I've done celebs, bloggers, medical memoirs, traumatic stories, abuse survivors, animal memoirs, most things really. I love stories of fascinating women - it's rare for me to work with men. There are often people who want family histories written in a more narrative style too and I enjoy those as the stories would be lost otherwise.

Have you thought of doing NaNoWriMo? That works well for lots of people - good luck!

ColourMeExhausted · 22/09/2022 21:50

Absolutely loving the variety of jobs on here! Are they inspiring you OP? I'm off to research being a ghostwriter (thanks @Stuffthisstuff 😊).
